NEW IN THE LIBRARY Bob and Lois Ward have donated a large part of
their remarkable library of religious books to our
church. Among them is Frederick Buechner's
(BEEKner) Whistling in the Dark: an ABC The-
ologized. In its 116 pages, this book gives brief but thoughtful and
often humorous definitions of terms you might never have considered
"theological;" usually with a Biblical reference to support the defini-
tion, the terms are alphabetized as in a dictionary.
In contrast we have Christianity: the first Three Thousand
Years by Oxford professor and church historian Diarmid Mac-
Culloch. In its 999 pages he discusses the origins of the Hebrew Bibe,
the spread of Jesus' message, the formation of the New Testament, and
Christianity's essential role in shaping the present, for better or for
worse. ***
Thanks to Althea Gray and Judy Atkinson who have agreed to
serve with me as an ad hoc committee to organize the library holdings
to better serve the church.

A heartfelt thank you to our First Christian Family for thinking of us

Youthful Information . . . . . . . .
October has come and gone, and November has already arrived! So start dressing those turkeys and decking those
halls, because the holidays are just around the corner! October was, indeed, a busy month for the Youth. We volunteered at the
Winston-Salem Rescue Mission on October 3rd, sorting donations and hanging up clothes. We had a movie night on October
16th, going to see Minions at Marketplace Cinemas. And, of course, we have our annual Trunk or Treat celebration planned for
October 30th, where many a hotdog will be consumed, many a costume worn, and many a treat handed out! Through it all, we
continued our weekly Wednesday night meetings at 6pm with a meal and topical studies on Christian ethics. Those Wednesday
night meetings will continue through November, along with a few special events worthy of notice. The first is the annual CMF
Fish Fry, to take place on Saturday, November 7th, from 4-7pm. The Youth, as always, will help by serving drink orders and
busing tables. Then, on Saturday, November 14th, we will travel to the 22nd Annual Carolina Renaissance Festival in Hunters-
ville, NC – a blast for persons of every age! And, of course, we are continuing with our rehearsals for this year’s Christmas
Pageant, which will be held on December 13th at 6pm and include a potluck dinner and a special visitor! If you would like any
additional information on any of the above events, or if you are not on the Youth email list and would like to be, please email
Chris Rinker at [email protected].

“Faith Seeking Understanding”. . . . Gifts & Thanksgiving
Over the past few weeks we, as a church, have been talking a lot about gifts and graces. Having just concluded a very intense
focus on gifts of the Spirit, I believe each of us, who participated in small group discussions, completed the Spiritual Gifts
inventory, and covenanted with God and one another to use our individual spiritual gifts in the coming year, have acquired a
deep understanding of the gifts we have been given by the Holy One who gives every great and perfect gift.
And along with our Spiritual Gifts comes the gifts of our time and financial resources to the work of our church. God has
been so generous to us all, in ways that we can see, but also in so many more ways that often escape our attention. God’s
very nature is one of giving and so we do not give merely to acknowledge our own blessings, as though we are paying God
back for what we have received. I have to remind myself of this as well, but the reality is that God does not need our money.
But, what God does desire is deep connection and relationship with God’s very self as well as with each other. And the di-
mensions of these deep and abiding relationships involve and include our resources of time and money. The work that we do
as a church has a deep impact in the life of our community and in our own lives as well. As we enter into this season of
thanksgiving, as our congregation continues to live into the future God is making for us, I invite you to prayerfully reflect on
what it means to abide in and give praise to a God whose very nature is that of giving. We don’t give so that God will con-
tinue to give. We give because God already gives and in the action of sharing our Spiritual gifts, our temporal and financial
resources, our whole selves, all of us are continually transformed, conformed into the likeness of Christ.
In the coming weeks as our congregation prepares for next year’s ministry here at FCC, we will have several opportunities to
celebrate what God is doing in the life of our church. On Sunday, November 22nd we will celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday in
a combined worship service beginning at 10:30 in the sanctuary, with music from our Praise Band as well as our Choir as
well as a thanksgiving lunch in Taylor Hall immediately following worship. Furthermore, we will be mightily blessed to hear
a good word preached from Dr. Jill Crainshaw, professor of worship and associate dean at Wake Forest Divinity School,
who is an amazing preacher. A meaningful part of worship during this service will include a moment when each of us will
be invited to covenant with God and with each other to share a portion of our financial resources as we continue to be the
hands and feet of Christ for our community.
Another opportunity to celebrate the gifts of God in our lives will be the annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving
Celebration that FCC participates in along with other local communities of faith. This year’s service will take place at St.
Leo’s Catholic Church, (333 Springdale Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27104) beginning at 7pm, also on November 22nd. Please also bring a canned food item to benefit Crisis Control Ministries. I hope to see you all there as well as in worship!
See you in Church,
Ryan

5th Sunday Mission Presentation November is a month with five Sundays, where we
give our Sunday School teachers a day off and we all
come together for a mission presentation. However,
since the 5th Sunday is Thanksgiving weekend, we are
moving our presentation to Sunday morning, Decem-
ber 6. We will meet in Taylor Hall during the Sunday
School hour to see a video and hear a presentation
from Millie Pryce about the 2106 Habitat for Human-
ity Healing Build. This is a house build sponsored by
Hospice, that gives bereaved community members an
opportunity to honor the loss of loved ones, support
one another, and gain a sense of closure – all while
constructing a safe and affordable home for a Habitat
family. Come join us to discover how we as individu-
als, and as a church can support this worthwhile cause.
