“CLEAN” IS THE NEW “BEAUTIFUL”!Our honourable Prime

Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birthday. This kick started the plans to build toilets and provide sanitation facilities across the country. Gujarat State Chief Minister Mrs. Anadiben Patel invited nine eminent personalities from various fields in the state to lead the Swachh Gujarat Abhiyan. One of the nine prominent personalities nominated for this mission is Shri Sudhir Nanavati, Executive Vice President of GLS.

The significance of this Abhiyan increases if children take the initiative of cultivating the virtue of cleanliness and nurturing it throughout their life, and thus fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a “SWACHH BHARAT”.

How do you feel after being nominated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Gujarat for SWACHH GUJARAT ABHIYAN?

I was definitely pleased. In fact, I was at Dalhousie for my Diwali holidays and learnt from a news channel that I have been selected as one of the ambassadors for the purpose. I immediately called our Honorable Chief Minister, Mrs. Anandiben Patel to convey my gratitude for the same. I also promised to fulfill her expectations with the project and assured her of complete satisfaction in this regard. The decision of the Honorable Chief Minister is totally non-political

My very first focus shall be the school children as they have an untainted mind which aids to

Educational Institutions are the best forum for making the project successful. As per my opinion, any young group, be it the collegians or school going children look up to their teachers as their inspiration. Thus, the teachers are the backbone of the education society. The teachers shall continuously caution the students and cultivate in them the habit of cleanliness which the students shall follow for their entire lifetime because what you do not learn in fifty years cannot be learnt in fifty days. The teachers must teach the students the concept of “Self Discipline”and cultivate civic responsibilities for better future. What are the steps taken by GLS to make the mission successful?

Gujarat Law Society has adopted a village named Bakrol, miles away from Naroda with about 3000 population. I have decided to collect funds from my relatives and friends in order to supply the villagers with sufficient water facilities and also to construct toilets and provide sanitation facilities for the villagers to ensure cleanliness all around. The support of the government authorities shall also be taken and in the long run the responsibility will be given to the local authorities. We shall also take the initiative of getting the ponds and the lakes around the village cleaned. Moreover,

our students shall visit the village every week to supervise the programme and maintain cleanliness. I owe full support to the government for the betterment of the village. There will be a constant endeavour from our end to make the “SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN” successful at a larger scale. In your opinion, are photos of politicians and celebrities with brooms successful in actually motivating people?

Our very own Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi gave the first call for the “SWACHHTA ABHIYAN” when he picked up the broom in his own hands and became a role model for millions of citizens of India. This was followed by leading ministers, industrialists, actors, actresses and politicians. It made a great impact on the masses when famous personalities like Shri Amitabh Bachhan and Mrs. Nita Ambani were shown cleaning the streets of the country despite the comments of the critics who claimed it to be a publicity stunt. At the first instance, it does not give a valid impression but when seen from the positive aspect, it is a symbolic message that “Whoever you are, whatever chair you occupy whichever field you belong to, YOU ARE FIRST A CITIZEN OF INDIA and it is the responsibility of the citizens of the country to make

India a clean nation”. In my opinion, cleanliness is

our prime duty and no one must feel shy to execute the same. If everyone is duty bound, the day is not far when India shall be the cleanest nation by the year 2019.Quote an incident from your life which has inspired you to a great extent for the mission?

A few days back, I was at the Delhi airport where a girl aged twenty five had visited India for a few days and was waiting for the flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad to arrive. Meanwhile, in the queue, an old man tore a paper and threw the torn pieces under the chair where he was sitting. The girl observed the incident and she immediately took the torn pieces and threw them in a dustbin which was approximately fifteen yards away. Few people observed her and had regret on their face for the negligence on their part towards the nation. This incident of “Look and Learn” touched my heart and inspired me a lot. What are your plans to involve the general public in this mission and ensure that they remain faithful to it?

“Habits die hard.” I am not worried about the part whether the public will remain faithful or not because once an action begins, it slowly and gradually becomes a habit and the results will definitely be positive. Our only aim is to make constant

efforts in our venture and the consequences are inevitable. The result may not be seen immediately but in the near future of three to five years, the scenario shall be quite different.

SWACHH GUJARAT ABHIYAN is a part of SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN. “Swachhta” means cleanliness and my personal view is that “Not only humans, everyone likes cleanliness. We as humans take off our shoes before entering a temple, church or a mosque and if given an opportunity, we even clean the religious places as a way of offering prayers to God. If the people really give importance to the beauty cast on them, then why not towards the society?” Thus, I intend to involve the general public to spread awareness on cleanliness. What is your message to the students studying at GLS and all over Gujarat?

My message to every past and present student of GLS is that:-

“SWACHH GUJARAT should be your duty for which one is required to keep not only the houses but also the nearby streets, buildings, offices, roads, public places as clean as possible. Do not litter around and carelessly throw around wrappers on the roads. In case others do it, try to take it away and throw it in the dustbins. Moreover, it is a general opinion

that you must repay to your Alma mater and your teachers by way of your actions and I believe there can be no better gift than maintaining cleanliness in the country.

Hence, if you really believe that GLS has played a significant role in you development, return it to your city, state and the country at large. SWACHHTA COMES NOT ONLY FROM BELIEF BUT ALSO FROM ACTIONS. Maintain this habit till your last breath and we shall together make every nook and corner of the country clean and hygienic.”Will GLS be a role model to other educational institutions for SWACHH GUJARAT ABHIYAN?

Gujarat Law Society at the moment stands up as a leader for the “SWACHH GUJARAT ABHIYAN”. It shall be too early to state that it can be a role model as we are in the initial stage of the mission. It may turn to be a role model in a couple of years with the help of all the stakeholders of Gujarat Law Society.

GLS shall formulate all the hard work to maintain “Swachhta” and ensures that the people live in a clean environment.

WHY KILL YOUR CQ AFTER PUTTING ON YOUR SHOES?By Sameer Yadav

We put on our shoes when we

leave from our homes, temples, mosques, chapels. Unfortunately our cleanliness quotient drops drastically after we put on our shoes. We not only stop keeping places clean, we also start making places dirty.

All religions around the world give importance to

cleanliness;Hinduism says in the

Geeta: “Splendor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, absence of malice, and absence of pride; these are the qualities of those endowed with divine virtues, O Arjuna.”

Islam says: “The key to the prayer (salah) is cleanliness, its beginning is takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) and its ending is salam (salutation).” (Abu Dawud, Taharah, 31: Tirmidhi,

Taharah, 39)Christianity Says:

“Cleanliness is next to godliness”

These lines show that every religion gives priority to cleanliness. It is one of the most basic and most essential qualities which should be there in society. A clean ambiance helps in building clean thoughts. But, regretfully, we have forgotten the great morals we are taught in our culture, and our first and only priority becomes our self only. It seems as if we crush our beliefs under our shoes every time we dirty our surroundings. We remember these kind of sayings only until we are inside the house

of god; as soon as we come out of it, we start throwing things on roads and ignore dustbins; we spit here and there, people even use walls as toilets. Why do we forget that God is great, God is everywhere, and God is always present? Why cannot we keep our surroundings as clean as we keep our shrines? If we do not copy criminals and their acts, then why do we copy people who make places dirty? With a logic that everybody is doing this, and that my actions will not make any difference, we unhesitating pollute our surroundings. We should remember that people accept and copy those who do pleasant and humane acts; so if you are clean yourself, you will become a role model. Negative actions are always detested, criminals always gets only punishment and rejection.

BAL SWACHHTA ABHIYAN AT GLSIf you hammer the habit of

cleanliess in the mind of the students it will help in moulding their character and help the nation in making it more sound in the future as the students are the future of the nation. If the children inculcate this habit of cleanliness, it will not be a time being activity but it will be a habit for life time. India is a country with a tremendous manpower if this manpower is channelized properly, any task can be carried out.One can overcome the obstacle if one desires following the proverb ‘where there is a will, there is a way’. Don’t wait for others, be the monitor of yourself. Check yourself.Ms. Sunanda Shah, Principal

of N.R. Secondary and Higher Secondary School

Cleanliness is the virtue or the ‘sanskar ‘which we all inculcate from our childhood and try to pursue it through out life to make this “sanskar” deep routed. It is necessary to guide the children from early school days and seeing that they follow it daily on their own. Aninitiative started by our PM and creating chain of nine persons will cover entire nation in short span of time “I strongly believe and appeal to stop using “use and throw” product and start reusable product. This small change will reduce garbage to great extent”.

Mr. Manan K Shah, an Assistant Teacher of N. R.

H.S.

India will have clean and hygienic atmosphere if the “Swachhta Abhiyan” is implemented at school level. At a tender age it is easy to develop a habit of keeping our surrounding clean.Mrs. Sonali Naik, an Assistant

Teacher of N. R. H. S

‘Swachhta Abhiyan” undertaken by the schools of GLS would develop habit of cleanliness among the students and awaken them towards personal hygiene and cleanness which will be a step to lead India to be green India.

Miss. Monika Barot, an assistant teacher of GLS

Secondary School

Cleanliness drive will help

to beautify the nature and the nation. The signature campaign of keeping cleanliness would make the people aware about this mission.

Mrs. Neela Raval, an assistant teacher of GLS

Secondary School

The objective of the campaign is to increase awareness among the students, it will improve student’s knowledge about the ways to reduce and dispose waste. It will also facilitate the development of positive attitudes regarding wastes. For providing me an opportunity for the same, through this campaign we received a message not only to have clean environment but also to have pure thoughts and deeds.

Saloni Chudgar, Head Girl 11th A, GLS

Bal Swachhta Abhiyan

initiated by the schools of GLS was an inspiring effort for all the students. The entire Abhiyan was carried out for five complete days and was celebrated whole heartedly by the students of each and every institution of GLS from junior to class twelve. Thus I feel obliged to be a part of GLS Bal Swachhata Abhiyan. JAI HIND

Priyam Shah, Head Boy 11th A, N. R. H. S

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a revolutionary step initiated by GLS. One should always remember that where

cleanliness is present, presence of God resides.

Nalin Otwani, Head Boy 11th C, N. R. H. S

On November 19th, our school put forth its humble efforts towards the noble cause of Swachhta Abhiyan. On the morn of this cleanliness drive our Registrar Shri Bhalchandra Joshi put forth his thoughts and motivated the students to put efforts towards a cleaner India. On behalf of the Executive Vice-President Shri Sudhir Nanavati, he emphasized the idea that cleanliness is not only a program to be conducted but it is also a state of the mind. It is a vision that the youth need to have towards a futuristic India. The motivated students cleaned the campus and made rounds of residence surrounding the school to spread the word of the idea. The students also took an oath to be part of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan. My message to all the students is that I believe in you. I believe in a clean India. I believe in the youth. I believe that India can achieve every goal it sets. All it needs is your compassion towards every cause that you undertake.

Deven Rathod, Principal of M.K. High School.

Students very actively took part in the cleanliness drive. Very enthusiastically, the students participated in the rally which started from the school gate and moved to the perimeter

of Law Garden. Cleanliness should be instilled in children as they are the future of our country. Swachta Abhiyan should be the motto of everyone but I firmly believe that first of all, we should eradicate our vices and enlighten our virtues which will help us out to carry further the Swachta Abhiyan. Besides this, I believe we should harp education as it will add fuel to the movement. I also dedicate myself to this movement.

Ami Desai, faculty member M. K. High School

Swachta Abhiyan which is initiated by our respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was supported by our school M.K. Secondary and Higher Secondary School. The school supported the idea by making charts & banners related to the event. Students also supported this event by cleaning the classrooms and the play-ground. They also took a pledge of cleanliness. Our school registrar Mr. Bhalchandra Joshi gave a speech on “Cleanliness is Godliness”. We are thankful to our school for arranging such a program which enlightened our minds to keep our India Swach.

Rutuja R. Katkoria, 11th D,M. K. High School

In the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan the students played a vital role by displaying hoardings & carrying out the vital task of cleaning the

campus. The students were given information towards a clean and green India. All the members of Gujarat Law Society took an oath to maintain cleanliness. A rally was carried out to make people aware that this is high time and now it is our duty to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of an India in itself a paradise. We hope that this step would definitely encourage the people to follow their duties towards cleanliness.

Aneesha R. Valecha, 11th D, M.K. High School

“The preservation of health is a duty.” Students have started taking the responsibility to see that the water tap is not leaking and the drinking water area is clean and dry. The motto ‘People should neither litter not let others litter’ has motivated the students very much. They see that their own classrooms and the school corridor remain clean. Placards made by many students on cleanliness drew the attention of many people and thus the message of cleanliness was spread among the masses. There was an inspiring environment created during the week. Overall it was a Success. We don’t see who is doing and who is not. We have moved with a collective responsibility.Students were enlightened that besides personal hygiene and sanitation at home they must pay heed to the Cleanliness of the surroundings.Teachers motivated the students to participate and understand one of the biggest teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, “Cleanliness brings relevance not only at home but also everywhere.”

Mrs. Archana Khanna, Principal K N Primary School

To motivate the children regarding cleanliness different activities were organized from 14th to 19th November which included class cleanliness and decoration, display of slogans as well as playground and campus cleanliness. Drawing competitions and essay writing competitions were organized and the winners were felicitated by giving prizes.Giving priority to nutritious and Hygienic food lectures were organized by teachers and students were asked to bring home made

While briefing them about SMPIC’s preparedness to deal with the offences against the girl students, the Principal Dr.Ashwin Purohit said, “More than countering the offences against female students, we rather aim at creating such an atmosphere and develop a

culture where no such incident would occur at all. We are happy that even though we are fully prepared with various committees like CWDC, Anti Ragging Committee and Anti Sexual Harassment Committee to deal with any such incident, no such issue has taken place till date.”

The student’s delegation also toured the college building

and interacted with the faculty members to learn about various achievements in academic as well as extra-curricular activities at different levels.

Before parting, the student expressed their sense of satisfaction and mentioned that their visit to SMPIC, one of the top most Commerce Institutes of India, was really an enriching experience for them.

nutritious food.On the last day of this mission i.e. 19th November, 2014, the entire staff of all the schools, Principals, Dignitaries and students took Swachhta pledge and participated in the Rally March with full zeal and enthusiasm. The one week mission undertaken by the schools is over but still it has left its imprints on the minds of children and they are full of vigour to keep their surroundings clean including their hygiene and health.

Neeti Sharma, Asst. Teacher, K N Primary School

The school changed for five days, especially from 14th to 19th November as various competitions, rally, etc were organized focused on student’s participation. A five day campaign turned into a mega event as things went on adding up leading toward clean India mission. I really liked the session on healthy, nutritious and hygienic food. There was also an essay writing competition in which the

students wrote essays on ‘Save Water’. The highlight of the rally was that the Placards made by many students on cleanliness as it drew the attention of many people and thus the message of cleanliness was spread among the masses. A thrilling environment was created during the week.Fatema Kachwala , Student –

VIII A, K N Primary School

The ‘Swachh Bharat’ Abhiyan is carried across the nation through a nomination of nine prominent personalities who continue the mission through a multiple of nine selected people. Shri Sudhir Nanavati – Executive Vice-President, Gujarat Law Society is amongst the nine iconic personalities in the state. This gives our institution both - a sense of pride as well as greater responsibility. One of the facets of cleanliness which really needs to be attended in the Indian society is avoiding ‘Food Wastage’. Its ironical that few are over-fed and a commendable part of our populace still fails to

get the two square meals of the day. A lavish banquet is sign of an affluent social status. We need to be out of such baseless convictions and redefine the term of social status on the grounds of social responsibility. Of course it cannot be an overnight transformation, yet if one initiates the mission will very soon take momentus.Mrs. Bela S. Mehta, Principal of C.U. Shah Primary School

A teacher’s role in the ‘Cleanliness Drive’ is very prominent & important she has to act as a preceptor as well as a practitioner. A child carries basic lessons from home but these lessons get engraved with the teachers signatory note. As a teacher affects students till affinity, every educator should place him/herself in a pivotal place to promote & cover all the facets of this Swachchata campaign. The maxim should be lead india to be Clean India.Mrs Pearl Rodrigues Faculty,
