Hi Oldsmobile Club members:This issue has the Voting Ballot as an insert. If you have received two ballots it is because you have an associate member at your address. Please vote and mail in right away and no later than Nov. 28. The results will be announced at our annual Christmas Party held Dec. 3, 2017 at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant in Livermore. A registration flyer is also an insert in this issue, too.

In this issue there is coverage of our members at the Roamin Angels Car Show held in Grass Val-ley, CA starting on page 8.

We also have coverage of our Annual Picnic and Car Show October 8th at Micke Grove Park in Lodi. I want to thank all that volunteered to help out at our show with parking, registration, setting up food tables, making coffee, hanging banners, counting votes, presenting awards and generally helping out. Jeff Peck did an outstanding job at his first experience as Car Show Chair person with guidance from outgoing Chair, Jon Manji. But most of all to Tony La Centra and his son Anthony that were at the BBQ grill from ~8 a.m. until past noon cooking our delicious sau-sage, tri-tip steak and peppers. Only down side is there was a shortage of food by the time Tony and his son had a chance to eat. We will make sure that won’t happen again! We are planning the 2018 Zone Show to merge with the Pontiac Club’s BOP show May 4-5, in Clovis where it will be held. The Pontiac Club contact, Andy Hoff, said he is in the process of working up a contract with the host hotel(s) the Homewood Suites and the Hampton Inn. He will have a password for us to assure we get the negotiated hotel discount. When that information becomes available it will be posted on our website as well as their website www.pontiacsof-centralcalifornia.org/ Their event starts Friday night with a BBQ followed by the car show at Bicentennial Park Saturday with lunch and awards in the afternoon. We are planning to have a Saturday night dinner event to do our awards. Look for more information in the next Oldsletter as things evolve.

In January we have our annual planning meeting at the CAM in Sacramento Jan. 13th, see page 5 for info. This will kick off 2018 and we want you to bring your ideas and let us know what you want to do next year. Please call Dan Haggerty ahead to insure you get the catered lunch.

January 27th and 28th we have our booth at the Turlock Swap Meet. I set up Fri 26th and could use help Saturday and Sunday. Give me a call if you want to sell, promote our club or both.

On page 4 there is a flyer for the 120th Oldsmobile Anniversary held in El Segundo on Nov 18th.This is better suited for the So-Cal Club but if you can make it, it does sound like 4 hours of fun. President, Larry Ewing

September 6, 2017 Nor Cal Meeting MinutesPresident Larry Ewing called the meeting to order at 6:12 p.m. at Denny’s Restaurant in Hayward with 8 members in attendance, Larry asked Linda Sutherland to read the June 7, 2017 minutes. Minutes read and accepted.

Officer Reports:Vice-President: Denise had nothing to report. Larry asked about scheduling another Castello di Amorosa Winery tour, Denise will set up another tour.

Treasury and Membership: Dan Haggerty said our treasury is solvent. We have a new member, George Drew.

Health and Wellness: Linda Sutherland shared that one of our members, Sheryl Wallin was hospitalized and will follow up with her.

Webmaster: Don Sutherland reported that our website has remained the same. He passed around graphic charts of the website usage.

Newsletter Editor: Larry Ewing said the next newsletter will be a mailed version containing ballots for of-ficers and the Christmas party flyer. The Christmas party will be at Cattlemen’s in Livermore on December 3, 2017 and the cost will be the same as last year.

New Business: Larry announced that we now have a new Car Show Chair, Jeff Peck. A correction was noted for the June 7th minutes. The date for the Rocketwest gathering at Pete and Christy Clayton should be September 16 not September 23, 2017 as first scheduled.

Old Business:Sign ups for Micke Grove have started. Larry Ewing called to verify our reservation and Bear Creek is reserved. Volunteers on the day of the show still needed. There was a discussion about show awards and Larry will follow-up with Jon Manji and Jeff Peck.

The Zone Show next year will be held at Bicentennial Park, Clovis, California in conjunction with the Central Valley Pontiac Club on May 4-5, 2018. Larry found an Italian restaurant that can accommodate our club for our Saturday night awards banquet, as the Pontiac club does their awards on Saturday afternoon. Larry is coordinating this event with the So-Cal club. So-Cal would prefer that we keep the judging of cars as we’ve done in the past. As plans progress Larry will keep us all apprised.

Office of President Nominees for 2018 Officers

Hello, my name is Bob Griffith, and I’m running for President of Nor Cal Olds Club. I have been a part of Nor Cal Olds Club since the beginning, and I’ve previously served as Treasurer (2006-2007) and Vice-President (2004-2005).

If elected, I will strive to continue the well being of the club as has been ex-hibited for many years with emphasis on club members and their Oldsmobiles.

Bob Griffith

Office of Vice-President

I have been an Olds Club of America and Nor Cal Olds Chapter member since 1980, soon after I bought my 1969 Hurst Olds. I also have three other Olds-mobiles, a 1975 Hurst Olds W25, a 1979 Hurst Olds and a 1984 Ninety-Eight. I was the NOR CAL Chapter PR guy for many years.

I have attended four OCA national events with a car and five without. I am a OCA Master Judge.

If elected I support a plan to make our chapter and zone show judging more informal, and the plan to provide OCA points type judging on a member requested basis. When requested the members car would be judged with OCA rules with the best person that has knowledge of that model of Oldsmobile. This is so the member can make improvements before judging at a Na-tional OCA meet.

And most of all “Have Fun”, Jeff Stanish

Office of Treasurer/MembershipI have been the club membership person and treasurer for the last six years and was able to get our club re-classified as an exempt car club from state and federal taxes. I ask for your support for the next term.Dan Haggerty

Office of SecretaryHello Nor Cal Olds Club,

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Beau Brown, and I am interested in becoming the next Secretary of our club. I have been a member since 2004, and am newly retired, so I am hoping to serve Nor Cal Olds in this position. I have really enjoyed my involvement with our club, have met many passionate Olds people over the years, and am finally able to take a larger role within our organization.

I believe that my career as an English teacher will serve me well in this posi-tion. I enjoy writing, and am a good listener. I am detail oriented, and eager to tackle the position and work involved. Thank you for considering me for Secretary, and I hope to meet many more of you over the next few years.

September 8, 9 & 10 the 18th Annual Roamin Angels Car Show in Grass Val-ley was held at the local fairgrounds. Our Olds Club attended as a club now for the second year. This is a great show starting on Friday with and evening BBQ. Saturday brought about 800 cars with one building full of cars indoors. There was a cars for sale section but most were for display and out on the lawn under the pine trees. There were food vendors, art and crafts, gravity drags, and various other displays, as well as, a continuous raffle, one of which is for a fresh built V-8 engine.Sunday is the day for the awards and giv-ing the engine away and also a poker run. We had five Oldsmobiles from our club and about 10 members. This is a show I highly recommend and hope to see more members next year. LEE

The weather was perfect for our annual Olds Show at Micke Grove Park, Lodi. We were again at Bear Creek picnic area and by mid morning Tony LaCentra along with his son Anthony were cooking our main meal of tri-tip steak with peppers. First off the grill were sausages for a pre-lunch appetizer.By noon about 20 cars had arrived and more than 40 people. This was a “peoples choice” voting venue and after lunch the ballots had been counted and awards presented. We arranged the cars into 5 groups solely on year spans as to get 3 to 5 cars in each class. The earliest car was driven by John Gonzales from Los

Banos with his ‘31 coupe, left. Below Rudy Martinez had his ‘48 66 looking good. The ‘49 98 Club Sedan with the hood up was owned by Bill Schwartz. Bot-tom on left of page is Jeanie and Alan Marsden’s ‘49 88 convertible that won best of class 1. Jeff Stanish offered to drive their car from Manteca because Alan wanted to bring his electric mobile scooter and it just doesn’t fit in the Olds.

As the OCA National meet does not come out west that often, I made plans to attend it in 2017. I was trying to get our 1979 Hurst Olds ready for the trip but could not find anyone to do the body and paint in time for the event. I kicked around renting a car but my son, Sean said “Dad, we need to bring an Oldsmobile to the event” and helped me get my wife Sherie’s daily driver 1984 Ninety-Eight ready for the trip. We installed all new hoses, a rebuilt radiator, new fan belts, the power steering pump rebuilt and got the AC fixed, and new front brakes. Willy Roland of San Jose Radiator did a great job of rebuilding the original 2 core radiator into a 3 core and also got the AC working again. I also went back through all my past repair receipts to know how old each critical item was such as tires, water pump, alternator, etc. Sean and I did the trip, as Sherie cannot handle high elevation. We left Sunday,16 July and stayed in Bartsow the first night, there we met Larry Ewing, Mike White and Domenic Spinetta and friend for dinner that night. Next day, we met the So Cal Olds club caravan group at the Barstow Train Station complex and made our way to the Flagstaff, AZ. On the way, the ’71 442 from So Cal blew an AC aluminum line. My old AC guy, Frank Scales would say to replace these every so often as the coldness causes the aluminum to get brittle over time. At Flagstaff, we stayed at the Twin Arrows Casino which had a ton of activities to do, we ate at the buffet and later swam in the pool and relaxed. Next morning we were on the way to Albu-querque, NM, and arriving at the OCA host hotel Pyramid Mariott. On Wednesday we took in the Al Unser Racing Museum. There, we were given a special tour which included a lecture by 4 time Indy 500 champ Al Unser. We took pictures with him and he gave out autographs. In his museum was a 1970 442 Pace Car Convertible given to him for win-ning the 1970 Indy 500. The one other Oldsmobile in the museum was a 1930 4 door, which was restored after being in the Unser towing business junk yard. Thursday we took a short drive to Sante Fe and went to the New Mexico History Museum and had lunch at the world famous Whole Hog BBQ. On the way back, we visited the J&R Vintage Auto Museum in Rio Rancho which had 60 cars, some cars that participated in the Great Race and the

1995 Great Race Winner. Thursday night we went to the welcome buffet and got to catch up with Nor Cal members Stuart and Patricia Overholtzer, who recently relocated to Oregon. I also

caught up several SoCal members I have not seen in a while.Friday was judging day and I was assigned to support the 68, 69 and 72 Hurst Olds Class judging. There was a great turn out of cars in this class and most were meticulously restored. I heard the winner of the class won by only 3 points. Although our ’84 Olds was not judged, they allowed me to park it as display only. Then, Friday night the OCA Racing group held a race at the weekly grudge drags at Albuquerque Dragway. I gave Larry, Mike and Jon Manji a ride to the track. About 30 Olds race cars participated in the event, with one of the cars topping 156 mph in

16

the quarter! Good to see Olds performance is alive and well, with original W30, W31 and Ram Rod cars participating.

On Saturday morning, I went to the OCA General Membership meeting, a summary of the highlights were posted in a separate write-up in the last Oldsletter. On Saturday night, Sean and I went to Sandia Speedway dirt track which was the highlight of Sean’s reason to come with me. Soon after the start of racing it started to rain, but the track promoter and most fans waited it out and racing resumed at 10 p.m. and got the whole race in. We even saw some racers we knew from them racing at Per-ris, CA Speedway.Sunday we toured the National Museum of Nuclear Science. What a great museum with indoor and outdoor displays. There were some missiles on display made by Lockheed Missiles and Space Division in Sunnyvale where Larry and I used to work, as part of the cold war section. They had two restored cars including the origi-nal 1942 Packard limo used in the first atomic bomb test.

We later caught up with the So Cal group in Flagstaff. We stayed one more night in Barstow and got home with no car problems after 10 days and 2,400 miles later. Defi-nitely a memorable trip for Sean and I.

Blue Angel has a Good Year

Our 1950 Olds 88 convertible (AKA Blue Angel) picked up 979 points after being driven to the OCA Na-tionals in Albuquerque, NM and received Best of Class. Back in California after the 2,465 mile run, at the Goodguys West Coast Nationals it received the Awesome Olds Award. At our recent show in Lodi another Best of Class. At the Roamin Angel show they were ready to give us another award but we needed to be there Sunday and had to pass. What’s goin’ on! (As Marvin Gaye would say)It says a lot for a 67 year Oldsmobile, bone stock, 6 volt, bias tires, survivor. 2017 has been a very good year for her.Makes us Proud,Linda and Larry Ewing
