Video and Impact
• Video is a great media for sharing home horticulture, pest management and key program initiatives.
• More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month!
• "I thought that YouTube was like TV, but it isn't. I was wrong," said Robert Kyncl, YouTube's global head of content. "TV is one-way. YouTube talks back." - Associated Press

Getting Started: • Develop an editorial calendar for video topics:
– What are hot topics for the next couple of months? – What is your most common Hot-Line question? – “Gardening Tips” – Upcoming events to promote
Editorial Calendar:
“Gardening Tip” Videos • A “Garden Tip” video should be on average 2–5
minutes long, should not exceed a maximum of 10 minutes
• Focus on one topic per “Garden Tip” video– Fall gardening tips – Gardening during drought – Young tree care – Pruning mature roses
Getting Started:
Possible Topics
Create “Script” and Shot List
Scripts• Scripts for videos should be avoided when possible
• Memorizing scripts can make the presenter seem unnatural, shoot a video like you are having a conversation

Filming Recommended Items for Filming:
• Video Camera • Tripod• Lavaliere Microphone • Extra Lighting (Indoors) • White Balance Adjustment
Lighting • Spend some time arranging good lighting • Use specific lighting equipment for lighting the
scene and/or camera-mounted.• Natural light can be utilized as part of your lighting
concept, as can the normal room lights. • Normal room lights are typically insufficient for
video lighting and will result in poor image quality.• Typically, good lighting is a diffused light coming
from the front.
Lighting – Outdoor • Avoid shooting during peak sun times
• Shoot in early morning or late afternoon to reduce shadows and harsh lines on subjects
• “Golden Hour” - www.golden-hour.com
• Use external lightsto fill shadows

Background
• When you are not using a background system choose an appealing room or space
• The scene should be orderly – remove distracting objects such as cables, bags, flipcharts etc. There should be no reflecting objects or surfaces in the camera’s field of vision.
Framing Subjects • Rule of thirds
• Concept in video and film production in which the frame is divided into nine imaginary sections, creates reference points which act as guides for framing the image.
• Avoid cutting off limbs or subjects in strange places (ankles, no hands, etc.)
• Because internet video is often viewed in a small window, it is good to stay tight on your subject
