Environment Consciousness

Does the Institute conduct a Green Audit of its campus and facilities?

The college has no Green Audit system but the students are made aware of the far reaching consequences which human beings will have to face in case we do not take immediate steps to protect the environment. Environmental Study is part of the curriculum of B.Com and BBA programmes.

Time to time Environmental society of the college organizes environment awareness programs and also invites guest speakers to highlight and sensitize the students. The college is an eco-friendly campus. Varieties of trees and rare plants decorate the campus. The NSS unit with the support of forest department has planted many trees in the campus. The planted trees are maintained by the gardeners. The college is free from plastic and tobacco.

The College works out all measures to maintain a green environment in the campus. To make the college eco – friendly, NSS volunteers take adequate efforts to sustain and promote the message to conserve the environment not only in the college campus but also in their neighborhood. Every year the institute plants many saplings to beautify the surroundings to a greener, more eco-friendly and pollution-free environment. Ayurveda herbal garden with plants like Tulsi, Pudina, Alovera, Lemongrass, Ashwgandha, Kalamegha, etc are maintained by the gardeners. There are five gardeners to carry out the horticulture work in the college.

To make the campus eco-friendly, the following strategies have been implemented.

Energy Conservation:

Students are instructed to switch off the lights and fans when not required. The Chowkidar of the college also performs the duty to check whether fans are switched off in the unoccupied class rooms and after the classes are over.

The College has established one computer lab and lab attendant is properly trained to shut down the system and printers when not in use. Electronics equipment’s and gadgets are shut – off when not required. Fluorescent tube lights are being replaced with energy tube lights.

Switching off/unplugging fans, lights, air conditioners, computers, printers, and electrical and electrical equipment when not in use is ensured by putting up stickers near the entry points/ near the switches.

The dry leaves and the waste papers are not burnt but are collected in the pit dug in one corner and leaf litter from the campus is used as organic manure.

What are the initiatives taken by the college to make the campus eco friendly?

Best Practices

Elaborate on any two best practices which have contributed to the achievement of the Institutional Objectives and/or contributed to the Quality improvement of the core activities of the college.

Best Practices:1

Title of the Practice: YUVCLIQUE – The Management Fest

The college aims to emphasize on the overall personality development of the students along with the academic excellence.

Goals of the Practice

To cultivate cognizance and competitive spirit in our students. To identify and groom the inherent talents of the students. To indoctrinate and edify the students for the pursuit of stimulating their innovative ideas. To help students be firm and attain confidence in themselves with a belief of upright thought.

Page 10: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES. Environment Consciousness Does the Institute conduct a Green Audit of its campus and facilities? The college has no

To develop a compassionate attitude and a sturdy civic sense by being effective and affable hosts. To think evidently and censoriously and to converse efficiently so as to focus on making the fest a success. To endorse an open-minded social viewpoint and ethical vision. To bring forth the team spirit and leadership qualities of the students and widen their social outlook that will help them in the future to work in groups. To uphold gender equity by making available equal opportunities and giving equal recognition to the efforts of the students and to encourage them to take up new endeavors.

The Context

The students are very effervescent and it is essential to bring out their potential and give them a platform to exhibit their potential. As an institution catering to students coming from varied backgrounds and skill levels, we have faced various challenges in instigating the talents of our students in all the fields. The student in our institution come from various backgrounds like from undeveloped/rural to urban/metropolitan, regional-language-medium educated to English/convent educated. With such a widespread student base, it is a round-the-clock chore for the faculty members to formulate a strategy to bring everyone under the same umbrella and ensure maximum participation in all activities that are necessary for developing the all-round persona of students.

The institution’s aim to ensure maximum participation has been instigated successfully with YuvClique. Over the last few years, the college has been organizing ‘YuvClique’ an inter-collegiate Management Fest which is planned, piloted and managed by the students and teachers who are the members of ‘Gestione’, the Management Club of the college. The student members are selected after a tedious screening and interview process conducted by the teachers who are the members of Gestione over a period of 3-4 days. YuvClique is a platform for various colleges of tricity to participate and win accolades through healthy competition. It helps the students in accomplishing the desired standards in the dynamic competitive world. Aiming to tap the hidden potential and awakening the competitive spirit, YuvClique consists of a series of events like Quiz, Just a Minute; Paint the Mask, Fashion Torque etc. in which the students from different colleges and institutions participate with fervour and zeal. The various activities involved in organizing the fest are segregated and committees of students are formed. The committees consist of team leaders and other members work in teams to accomplish the tasks assigned to them under the direct supervision and guidance of the member teachers. The students do canvassing by organizing flash mobs and for this the students take the permission from the authorities where the canvassing has to be done. Our Students also take permission from other college’s Principal’s and speak to other students and distribute the rules of various competitions and posters and brochures along with invitation letters are also distributed in almost all colleges of the tri-city. Canvassing process is completed with the follow up and collection of registration entries.

Trophies and certificates for winners and runners up are designed and ordered at economical rates by various sponsors brought in by the students. Judges for various competitions are carefully selected and invited as per the event. Students are encouraged to design and print special posters for every competition and the sponsors. Special flexes and banners of YuvClique are also prepared to be put up in various places on the day of the fest. Posters showing/indicating directions to venues are prepared. The students bring in their ideas regarding the theme of the fest and also perform all the decorations, set up of the pandals, stalls, seating arrangements, preparing the fillers in between the events. Students are trained to anchor the inauguration ceremony, conduct various competitions and anchor the prize distribution ceremony. Exclusive student committees are formed to be incharge for refreshments and attending to sponsor’s needs and requirements. Major sponsors are authorized to erect stalls during the fest.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

The major problem faced is the lack of a proper auditorium. Due to the lack of space there is a problem in conducting two or more events simultaneously. The unpredictable weather conditions always play a crucial role in organizing the fest with efficiency. Also there is a clash in competitions of events, if participants are simultaneously participating in two or more competitions. Size of sponsorship is a big challenge, which is dependent on the negotiations by the students and benefits derived from sponsorship by keeping proper communication about benefits of the sponsorship to the sponsor. Maximum time has to be spent for the preparations and this becomes a restraint as teachers along with daily teaching, organize the event through training the students.

Evidence of Success

We believe in hard work and with complete dedication success follows. This belief has been proven right by the results we have achieved over the last few years. Our students have excelled in every form of extra-curricular activities, be it sports or cultural or any other and have earned the distinction of being worthy participants even though they compete with the students who get proper training in their respective fields which is not available to our students as we are a commerce and business administration college and our students prepare themselves for the competitions on their own, only for a few events they get professional training otherwise they win and bring laurels to the college with their own efforts. Our students have carved a niche for themselves with their extensive participation in all events. The icing on the cake is the great number of prizes they have won for the college over the years through their fortitude and hard work and willingness to excel in every field.

Best Practices: 2

Title of the practice: Improvised Learning By Multi Mode Teaching Practices

Goal:

GCCBA aims at imparting more innovative, learner-centered programs that rely on a combination of high-quality, interactive learning ware, asynchronous and Synchronous conversations and individualized mentoring.

The College has given platform to every teacher to create his/her own blog at word press.com and given freedom to add their study material, Power point presentations, etc. in their account at any time through their laptops which are provided to them by the college.

Blogs are made user-friendly for the students by linking them with College Website.

The Context:

We believe in designing more effective learning Environment by treating students as individuals rather than as homogenous groups. Rather than maintaining a fixed view of what all students want or what eall students need, we follow a flexible approach by creating an environment that enables greater choice for students. For example, in the amount of interaction that they require with faculty, staff, or one another.

A common assumption is that online learning cannot measure up to the in -class environment. Information technology enables us to meet the needs of diverse students when, where, and how they want to learn. When we think about how to utilize technology to improve learning, the key is to focus on what we can do with IT that we cannot do without it. Technology can create environments that provide individualized learning approaches that serve each person in ways that he or she can most benefit.

Our Faculty members define the learning outcomes, the applications of that learning, the content and potential difficulties that students may encounter. ” Rather than trying to replicate a teaching model online, the idea is to create an environment in which students interact and wrestle with learning materials directly (or in teams), under the tutorial guidance of a mentor.

Page 16: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES. Environment Consciousness Does the Institute conduct a Green Audit of its campus and facilities? The college has no

The Practice: Web-based materials enable some students to complete the course primarily on their own, interacting with faculty and other students only to the extent required by the course. Others prefer to take advantage of the variety of support activities and facilities as well as opportunities to interact with course faculty, teaching assistants, and peer mentors. By working collaboratively to design the course, faculty members are able to create, change, adapt, and add to an on-going body of materials.

Effective Web-based materials, often called learning ware, go far beyond simply transferring traditional material to the Web, since a simple transfer cannot improve learning. Rather than replacing textbooks, these materials supplement them with Activities: interactive simulations that can be actively manipulated, that provide engaging and challenging tasks, and that supply instant feedback on performance. Good learning ware engages the full range of the human senses through multimedia technology (e.g., visual examples of concepts, short news clips, or foreign language conversations that can be reviewed as many times as a student desires) and almost always forces students to make learning decisions. In other words, good learning ware encourages active learning.

Web based Blogs are available to students twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Individualized learning environments permit students to move quickly through content they already know and spend more time on areas they find more challenging. Students engage in study at their preferred time rather than at prescheduled times. Students do not all have to do the same thing but rather learn at their own pace.

Evidence of success:

The Best Part of our College is that it is made compulsory for all the teachers to make their blogs on wordpress.com and upload the study material on the blog. Students can access the blogs at college website. Various teachers have uploaded their Power Point Presentations prepared by them as well as by students, academic calendar, lesson plans, project topics and topics for presentations to be given by students. All the teaching Staff members are provided laptops by the college which provides the flexibility to prepare their lesson plans and remain in touch with the students anytime and anywhere. Keeping pace with the modern techno-savvy world, our college is having smart classrooms with a view to provide comforting atmosphere to make learning more focused and effective. Our classrooms are stuffed with multifarious facilities such as Air condition, Smart Digital Podiums attached with a Computer, LAN and Internet connectivity to encourage online and research based teaching. Other fittings include Multimedia Projectors, Wall mounted high grain screens and wooden dual desks of the latest design and ergonomics are provided to the students for their ease and comfort. Their skills are sharpened and chiseled keeping in view the patterns of the final examinations. They are given project topics which are uploaded in the blog well in advance so that students can get the time to collect data, class quiz, e-content is uploaded by all the teachers in their respective blogs, online diary is maintained which includes activities of all the societies case studies, role playing and PowerPoint presentations given by students in the class etc. This has helped them attain their targets in a better way.

Page 18: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES. Environment Consciousness Does the Institute conduct a Green Audit of its campus and facilities? The college has no

Not only has this college made one group on Facebook also named as ‘GCCBA Group’ where faculty members and students are its members. Year wise students get themselves registered at the group and this is how student teacher interaction is made more conducive. Through social networking sites staff is keeping a watch on the students character, their feedback is taken and if required their counselling is done by the staff. The library has been computerized. Available information resources and Open Access journals/databases helps faculty and students to explore online/offline information requested by them. This feature made GCCBA’s library one of its kinds.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required: More support from the government may motivate more effective and efficient contribution. The problem that we are facing at present is lack of infrastructure, building, though we are using most modern technology in comparison to all other Government Colleges with special reference to (Department of Commerce & BBA). But there are some constraints of it being temporary building as we have to frequently go through lot of power cut problems, fluctuations, short circuits thereby resulting in deterioration of e-devices that we are using in our building and it also hampers the smooth functioning of our routine work.
