The Adobe PDF document is the foundation ofthe Intelligent Document Platform
There are 3 main components to the Adobe PDF format:There are 3 main components to the Adobe PDF format:
First and foremost is the Presentation Layer:It enables the creation of content rich Adobe PDF forms that includetext, images, video, audio, 2D designs, and 3D models. While most people think of Adobe PDF as a great way to create and share a static snapshot of a document, it can domuch more than just capture the presentation layer.
Business Logic can be implemented in Adobe PDF as:Dynamic forms with validation and calculations—ensuring that the data that is entered into the document is correct and the document iscomplete. This can be particularly important for design collaboration.Document access control and security—putting functionality into the Intelligent Document that unlocks hidden features in Adobe Reader. Theadvantage of this is that we can now turn Adobe Reader into a rich client for that application, so users can conduct business transactionselectronically, and then submit that data to back-end systems. Think of the time and cost savings here throughout your distributed supply chainif no one has to invest in new and expensive proprietary applications to review and approve documents, including contracts. In addition, weprovide the ability to enforce who has access to the document, by individual or group, and what they do with the document when they get it. (Forexample, can they restrict printing, copying, editing, distribution of the document?). We can audit what they do once they have that document. Finally, these rights can be invoked over a set time. We can create a policy that says someone has access for six months or until a certain dateeven after a document has been distributed. Imagine if RFQs were restricted after distribution and revoked once the submission deadlinepassed. NOTE TO SALES: With Microsoft Rights Management, once you distribute the document, you cannot change the rights. With AdobeLiveCycle Policy Server, you can. That is a key differentiator.Workflow routing—kicking off certain processes, such as approvals or engineering change orders (ECOs).
The Integration Interfaces enable:An XML schema to be associated with the Adobe PDF document and bound to form fields, andXML-based data to be input and extracted for routing to and from back-end systems using industry standards like XML and SOAP.
