Innovation in ROV Peripherals Norwood Hall, Aberdeen, Friday 6th September
Introduction
• ROVs are being asked to carry out more and more tasks. They rely on Peripheral
devices to complete most of these complex tasks. I have chosen four Innovative
products for discussion today.
• Multiplexers
• Seebyte
• 3D Lasers
• Tool Changer
Multiplexers The heart of ROV peripheral configuration
The Issues
• Increasing number of sophisticated power-hungry digital ‘broadband’ survey
peripherals.
• Full multiple HD video camera requirement.
• Increasingly accurate position and attitude/inertial sensors.
• Dual or triple configuration ultra high-resolution Multibeam 2D and 3D sonars.
• No sensor latency, deeper water, system diagnostics, remote control.
• Mixture of Ethernet, fibre, RS232/422/485, comms and protocols
• Ability to work in 3000m + of WD.
The Heart of ROV Survey Sensors

iXBlue PHINS DVL
R2Sonic 2024
Bowtech Surveyor Pro
TSS 440 Pipetracker
Coda Echoscope 3D Real Time Sonar
Valeport Mini SVS
Reson SeaBat 7125 Seebyte SeeTrack CoPilot
The Challenge
• Streaming of multiple peripheral data strings
• Powering an array of broadband digital
survey sensors
• Minimum signal connections to ROV
• Single power connection to ROV
• Plug and play
The Solution
The Solution
A single compact multiplexer that ...
• Operates on a single mode fibre and that can power and operate a variety of
sensors simultaneously.
• Connects via a single connector, compact, rugged, lightweight, and proven.
• Can operate at 3000m + depths.
• Can diagnose peripheral/sensor problems.
• Enables extended survey sensors/peripherals to be operated on an ROV.
• Enables the ROV to perform multiple survey and inspection tasks from a single
launch.
Survey & Tooling Skid
• ROV docks onto skid on deck
• Single connection
• Multiple sensors
• No requirement to install sensors
individually – saves hours!
• All sensors powered and run through
single Mux and single connection.
• Reduce failure risk of multiple
connectors.
Camera boom Dual Multibeam arms
Boom Arm TSS 440 Pipe tracker
The Features
• Can extend and expand the capability of an ROV by being able to accommodate
more sophisticated sensors and survey peripherals.
• Reduce incidence of launch and recover to change out sensors.
• Reduced time = reduced costs of ROV Support vessel, or barge, crew etc.
• Fibre drop-outs? No worries, no requirement for any link synch time as comms
are immediate after (re)-connection.
• Real Time data ,no latency
• Fully Time stamped
The Features Cont
• Compact and Lightweight
• Bandwidth – not a limiting factor
• Oh....did I mention that it’s truly plug and play
• ...all running on one single fibre

GEN 5 MUX
Seebyte Smart software for unmanned maritime systems and sensors
SeeTrack CoPilot Introduction
• Easy-to-use plug-and-play software
• Makes piloting an ROV a much simpler
task.
• Enabling semi-autonomous, pre-
programmed ROV sorties
• Current and tether effects no longer
posing a challenge.
• Automated sonar tracking and
movement relative to a target.

Sonar 3D and Laser 3D
Latest innovations in Laser 3D
• Subsea LiDAR system built specifically for the subsea
oil and gas industry
• Fast, high resolution 3D Data Collection for Inspection,
As-Builts and Metrology
• Integrates with ROV and AUV
• Rugged design supports a variety of subsea workflows
and environments
• Available today
Laser 3D
Workflow based on Clarity Long range: 15+ meters
Water clarity: good to excellent
Short range: 2-8 meters
Water clarity: poor to fair
Medium range: 8-15 meters
Water clarity: fair to good
Laser 3D
Integrated with the ROV
Single Cable connection
for communications and power
Schilling UHD ROV
Laser 3D
Target – Hot Stab Panel
Static Scan – Real Time Viewing of 3D Data using 3D at Depth’s Mesh Software
Laser 3D
• Data is processed and
displayed in less than
1 minute
• Range is mapped to
colour
• Rotation of the data to
top view clearly shows
the curvature of the
tank wall
Laser 3D
Jumper and PLETS are the Scan Targets.
Jumper installation was the primary
objective.
• Maximum range measured was 14
meters – not max gain setting
• Performed successful scans of
targets the ROV camera could not
see – good but not perfect water
clarity
Laser 3D
Data Collected
• The INSCAN was able to perform scans
while mounted on the back of the ROV.
• The ROV was stationary
• The resulting scans provided enough
geometric definition to register together
• 3D modelling of major PLET
components was performed using Leica
Cyclone
Laser 3D
Scans Registered Together
• Coincident points were constructed in
both scans
• The models were then registered together
using coincident points derived from the
model – not best practice

Subsea OPAL Obscurant-Penetrating LiDAR
Neptec Technologies Corp.
• Canadian spin-out of an award-winning
Space technology company
• Are commercializing 20 years of innovations
for NASA and the Canadian Space Agency
(CSA)
• Have launched a family of obscurant-
penetrating 3D laser scanners called
OPAL 2.0
OPAL technology
A patented laser scanner technology that can penetrate obscurants
(dust, smoke, snow, fog, rain, even turbid water)
Technology originally developed for helicopters landing in the desert (“brownout”)
OPAL 2.0 scanners
OPAL in an open-pit mine
• Real-time 3D imaging
• Penetrates obscurants
• Packaged for extremely harsh
environments
