1. What is DoubleSided IML ?

DoubleSided IML is an IML label printed on both sides. DoubleSided IML also offers a solution for the new European labeling law. This law obliges food packaging labels to contain more information. Thanks to DoubleSided IML you can double your printing space.

2. Marketing possibilities

DoubleSided IML gives you a full range of marketing possibilities on the backside of the IML label:

(a) Make a suggestion on how to use your product, such as a recipe.(b) Invite the consumer to purchase the product again.(c) Thank your consumers for buying your product.(d) Show an indicator scale for easy dosing.(e) Give an incentive to visit your company website or participate in a contest.(f) Do cross-selling by promoting other products of your brand.

3. Technical characteristics

There are certain rules we need to keep in mind for creating and injecting DoubleSided IML. Therefore we have madespecific design and injection moulding guidelines.

a. Design guidelines

ǀ Fusion with the injected polypropylene

Wherever ink has been applied on the back side of the label, there is no fusion with the injected polypropylene. This means that you cannot cover the back side with a 100% print.

ǀ Injection point

As the temperature, flow and pressure get extremely high on the label at the injection point, you cannot put back side artwork in a 20 mm area around the injection point !

ǀ Edge of the label

If the back side artwork comes too close to the edge of the label, there will be no fusion with the molten polypropylene. Therefore we always recommend to keep away 5 mm from the border of the label.

ǀ Number of colours

In order to print DoubleSided IML labels in one print run, the artwork can have a maximum of 6 colours on the front side and a maximum of 2 colours on the back side. If you want to print more than 2 colours on the back of your IML label, you can do so by using the traditional printing technique involving two print runs.

Multiple colours may not overlap, otherwise the ink coverage gets too high and the adhesion with polypropylene becomes so poor that you end up with a bubbled finished product.

b. Injection moulding guidelines

ǀ Substrates DoubleSided IML labels can be printed on white polypropylene (orange peel and glossy), they cannot be printed on transparent polypropylene.

ǀ Test

As every product has a different injection temperature, cycle time and wall thickness, DoubleSided IML should always be tested.

ǀ Definition of no printing area around injection point In order to determine the distance between the artwork and the injection point, Verstraete IML offers labels with a grid printed on the injection point (on the back side). We ask the injection moulder to inject these labels to see where the ink gets blown away. As a result, we will be able to define the no printing area.
