The largest document supply service in the world. Digitisation enables desktop delivery within 2 hours
Over 250 years of collecting. Beneficiary of legal deposit, and £16m annual acquisitions budget
3 main sites in London and Yorkshire.
2,250 staff
Collection, 600km of shelving, grows at 11km per year
1.25 Tb of digital material through voluntary deposit
We support entrepreneurs and SMEs from that first spark of inspiration to successfully launching or developing a business.

Key facts and figures
Welcomed over 75,000 people though the doors Delivered over 1,000 workshops and 1:1 advice sessions Exceeded all our LDA targets for delivering business advice and
skills development, including those for supporting minority groups (apart from the disabled target) i.e. 51% women (vs 33%), 42% BAME (vs 33%) and 4.5% disabled (vs 5%)
An independent e-survey of 230 users conducted in 2007 showed that we had helped to create 47 new businesses (which were trading) and 115 new jobs; in addition we had taken 64 people to start-up phase
In 07-08 we leveraged £2.3 million in 'in kind' revenues and sponsorship, which is almost four times the LDA's annual investment.

June – Dec 02 Inspired by NYPL’s Science, Industry & Business Library; Mellon Foundation funding for collaboration (Dec 02)
Jan – Dec 2003 Developed proposition and consulted key stakeholders and potential funders. Appointed Project Manager (July 03)
Jan – Dec 2004 Pilot study, including focus groups. Steering Group/Project Board established.
Jan 04 – March 05 Development of Business Plan & Proposal. Further consultation.
April 05 Awarded £1 million funding from London Development Agency. Developed Centre and services
March 06 Opened Business & IP Centre
February 07 Completed Evaluation of Phase 1
April 07 Awarded London Development Agency funding for Phase 2 i.e. £2.4 million over 4 years

10 Lessons Learned
1. Always keep in touch with your users
2. Build in time to train/retrain your staff (identify champions)
3. Share your plans with key stakeholders
4. Don’t do it all yourself – work with partners (but ensure you have a ‘win win’ relationship)
5. Ensure that you have the support the support of senior management6. Build in as much flexibility as you can
7. Don’t underestimate the amount of ‘account management’ time required
8. Be prepared to innovate and experiment, but don’t lose sight of your objectives
9. Measure and report on everything you do!
10. Develop a portfolio of case studies to illustrate your successes
