Administrative/Biographical History

Abstract:

Franklin H. Martin (b. 1857, Ixonia, Wisconsin; d. 1935, Chicago, Illinois) founded the journal “Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics” (now the Journal of the American College of Surgeons) in 1905. In 1910, he organized the Clinical Congress of Surgeons of North America (now the annual Clinical Congress of the American College Surgeons) and in 1913 he founded the American College of Surgeons. During World War I, he served as a member of the Advisory Commission of the U.S. Council of National Defense. His wife Isabelle took an active part in his career. Their papers include correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, casebooks, clippings, publications, and photographs.

Biographical History:

Franklin H. Martin was born in Ixonia, Wisconsin in 1857. He entered the Chicago Medical College (now Northwestern University Medical School) in Oct. 1877. After his graduation in Mar. of 1880, he served as an intern at Mercy Hospital until 1881. He was on the staff of the South Side Dispensary (1883-1888) and was Professor of Gynecology at the Policlinic of Chicago (1886-1888). Beginning in 1887, he was for many years a gynecologist at the Women’s Hospital of Chicago. Also in 1887, he organized the Charity Hospital of Chicago. In 1888, with Dr. W.F. Coleman, he organized the Post-Graduate Medical School of Chicago.

The education of the practicing surgeon was the motivating factor of his career. To enable practicing surgeons to share their knowledge with others, he founded the journal “Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics” in 1905. To give surgeons a chance to personally observe demonstrations of surgical techniques in “wet clinics,” he, along with several others, organized the Clinical Congress of Surgeons of North America in 1910 (now the annual Clinical Congress of the American College Surgeons). Although many were involved in the founding of the American College of Surgeons, Martin is known as the visionary and principal founder. The College was established in 1913 to advance ethical practice, patient welfare, hospital standardization, and surgical education and research.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Martin a member of the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense. He served as a Colonel in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during World War I. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France for three months.

In Apr. 1918, Martin presented to the Advisory Commission a project intended to serve as a clearing-house for medicine and allied subjects, to be financed from private sources and to be housed at a location offered by the French government in Paris. Named the “College des Etats Unis d’Amerique,” it was approved by the Council of National Defense, but was ultimately made unnecessary by the speeding up of the transportation of doctors to France, and the approaching end of the war.

In 1933, Martin published his autobiography, “The Joy of Living,” recounting his early life, his life with his wife Isabelle, his life in medicine, and his life in the military. This autobiography can be considered the first history of the ACS since Martin recounts the story of how it came to be founded and much about its first

twenty years of existence.

Isabelle was the daughter of Dr. John Hollister, a founder of Northwestern University Medical School where he was one of Martin’s professors. She and Franklin married in 1886 and she supported him at every step of his career. They lived their whole life in the Chicago area, and travelled widely, often in connection with the activities of the American College of Surgeons.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the combined papers of Franklin H. Martin and his wife, Isabelle H. Martin. It includes personal and professional correspondence, casebooks, records of hospitals and medical schools with which Martin was associated, speeches, professional writings, correspondence related to Martin’s publications, diaries, obituaries, tributes, photographs, items Martin collected over his long career, and scrapbooks. Also included are documents reflecting the Martins’ early lives, such as family lineage and heritage materials, school books, and photos. The Martins' world travels, most often to visit surgeons and particularly in South America, are documented with brochures, photos, souvenirs, and correspondence with medical and surgical associations.

I.C. The War YearsMartin’s appointment as a member of President Woodrow Wilson’s World War I civilian Advisory

Commission of the Council of National Defense is well documented with correspondence that includes his activities in support of the Owen-Dyer Bill granting higher status to medical personnel in the military, his interest in and attempts at founding a medical museum, and his war years’ diary. Also included are records related to plans for a collaborative French/American medical college (the College des Etats Unis d’Amerique) to be housed in France. They trace the origin, evolution, and ultimate demise of the idea of this medical college and include the correspondence of Caroline Levy with FHM, notes, and lists. The development of the proposal is traced, through its many editions.

At least one dozen duplicates and carbon copies from the records of the College des Etats Unis d’Amerique were discarded.

The Committee on Nomenclature of Surgical Operations, Fred W. Slobe, Chairman, was appointed by the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents on February 9, 1923. "System of Nomenclature," by Asa Bacon appeared in the Jan. 1924 issue of the Bulletin. The next year a new committee, chaired by Dr. Carl E. Black, was appointed. In 1931, the National Conference on Nomenclature of Disease, with the cooperation of the ACS, took on the task of compiling a new nomenclature. The National Conference's "A New Nomenclature of Disease" was published in the June 1933 Bulletin. This folder of correspondence was collected by Dr. George W. Stephenson as a historical reference file. Correspondents include: George Gray Ward, Jr., Chief Surgeon, Woman's Hospital in the State of New York; Carl E. Black, Chairman, ACS Committee on Nomenclature; Miles F. Porter; William H. Mercur, member, ACS Committee on Nomenclature; William H. Davis., Chief Statistician for Vital Statistics, Bureau of the Census, U.S. Dept. of Commerce; Robert L. I.F. CorrespondenceMartin's correspondence dating from 1885 to his death in 1935 is found here, with item level description

allowing one to search this text for the names of his correspondents. These include the major medical, surgical, cultural, military, business, and political figures of the day. FHM’s correspondence with Isabelle provides valuable insights about both of them and about her role as a major supporter of all his endeavors. His correspondence with his secretary/administrative assistant Eleanor Grimm is especially revealing of their close collaboration throughout the history of the College, particularly just prior to his death. For more materials related to EKG, see the Eleanor Grimm Notebooks and the Eleanor Grimm Papers. Correspondence with Lucy Lamar deals with Lamar’s appeals to FHM, seeking his counsel and advice in the matter of her relationship with her husband. Julius Lamar was one of the many artists who painted a portrait of FHM. While some items here may logically fit in other sections of this description, they were all found in four large folders labeled “ Correspondence.”

III. MEMOIRS

The “Memoirs” are essentially scrapbooks/photograph albums documenting the lives of the Martins between 1901 and 1938. They are the largest part of the Martin Papers, consisting of 43 volumes filed in 102 three-ring binders. The binders and their contents are in rough chronological order, as they were found at the time of processing, with some exceptions. Although extremely methodical and systematized in their record keeping, the Martins at times noted incorrect dates. Where discovered, some of the pages of the “Memoir” notebooks have been slightly re-arranged to be more chronological, and also to facilitate the back-to-back arrangement within the sleeves in the binders.

These are an extremely rich source for the study of the early history of the American College of Surgeons, but even more, they are a source for the early 20th century social and cultural history of Chicago and, by virtue of the Martins’ extensive travels, of the socio-cultural environment of all the places they visited. That their lives were built around the College is demonstrated by the prominence of programs of the surgical meetings they attended, listing topics and presenters, along with the accompanying social events. Particularly noteworthy are materials about the major medical, cultural, military, business, and political figures the Martins encountered in their busy lives. The Martins had the habit of getting autographs of fellow participants in such events as dinners and theater outings, so the participants of many of these events are well documented. By cross referencing the photos, scrapbook entries, diary entries, and correspondence preserved in the notebooks with Martin’s autobiography, The Joy of Living, one can acquire much more factual data and gain many more insights, especially as to relationships among the various surgeons and how contemporary newspapers treated national events and cultural phenomena.

The volume numbers within the binders were part of the Martins’ original arrangement. The fragile pages of the “Memoirs” were enclosed in protective polypropylene sleeves and returned to their

original binders. Because the thickness of the enclosed pages made them too bulky to fit into the original binders new binders were added to the original ones.

BOX 39 BINDER 1: Vol. 11 (1920 Jan.-Mar.)South American Cruise [Jan-Mar]This volume documents the South American Cruise on board the R.M.S.P. “Ebro” undertaken by the Martins,

the Mayos, and other surgeon couples for the purpose of effecting closer relationships between South America and the United States in the surgical and medical profession and for the exchange of scientific research. Travel stops included Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. It includes newspaper clippings, photos, tourist information, postcards, autographs, and lists of shipboard activities. This binder concludes with Chile. [Another three pages of shipboard activities are appended, transferred from Vol. 15 [1921-22].

BOX 39 BINDER 2: Vol. 11 (1920 Jan.-Feb.)This begins with Valparaiso, Chile, then continues to Argentina and Uruguay. Panama Mar. 5th. It concludes

with Argentina and the Oct. 8th Section Meeting in Philadelphia, which was removed and placed in proper chronological order. Twelve pages were inserted from the section removed from Vol. 15 (1921-22); they were most likely included there in error.

BOX 39 BINDER 3: Vol. 11 (1920 June-Dec.)This begins with newspaper clippings on the funeral and burial of Major General William Gorgas in July and

Aug. It also includes correspondence from Col. Goodwin to IHM (1919 date mistaken?), newspaper clippings on presidential nominations of Harding and Hoover, a Mar. 15-Apr. 16 itinerary (1920?) (see postcards at end of second binder), telegram from IHM to Mrs. Irving Shuart about a house purchase, and the ACS public meeting in Seattle, Washington on Sept. 14. The binder concludes with an invitation for a reception for John Bowman in Chicago on Dec. 30th.

1921-1922

BOX 40 BINDER 1: Vol. 12 (1921 May-Aug.)Slightly out of chronological order, the first part of this volume documents the Martins’ travels to Sectional

Meetings on both the east and west coasts during May and June of 1921, shortly after their return from the South American journey. Along with the Section Meeting and Community Health Meeting programs, it includes postcards, tourist information, photos, and newspaper clippings. The volume begins with a photograph of the statue of Simon Bolivar, followed by President Harding’s reception for the Pan American Union on May 11th and newspaper clippings about the event. It continues with the Maryland/DC Sectional Meeting in Baltimore on May 10th, and the Massachusetts Sectional Meeting in Springfield, May 13th-14th. At this point it appears that IHM travels by herself for the rest of the month of May and June (or with her good friend Kate Harris?) throughout New York and New England, visiting sites of her own and FHM’s family histories. She attends a graduation at Wellesley. This first section of Vol. 12 concludes with several telegrams sent to IHM from FHM regarding his plans to visit St. Paul, Minnesota, Bismarck, North Dakota, and Aberdeen, South Dakota for Section Meetings in late June and to which she would not be accompanying him.

BOX 40 BINDER 2: Vol. 12 (1921 Aug.-Sept.)The second part of Volume 12 documents travel to Section Meetings on the west coast during Aug. and Sept..

It concludes with the Martins’ return to Chicago and activities there and in Minnesota.Section Meetings:May 10, Baltimore, Maryland/DC SectionMay 13-14, Springfield, Mass., Massachusetts SectionAug. 16-19, Calgary, Alberta, Alberta SectionAug. 22-23, Vancouver, British Columbia, British Columbia SectionAug. 25-26, Spokane, Washington, Washington SectionAug. 27-30, Portland, Oregon, Oregon SectionSept. 3, Return to Chicago

BOX 41 BINDERS 1 and 2: Vol. 13 (1921 Jan.-Feb.) and (1921 Feb.-Mar.)This volume documents with postcards, tourist information, shipboard activities on the RMS “Ebro,” and

newspaper clippings of travels to Cuba, Panama, Peru, Chile, and Argentina and the medical personnel visited on the first leg of the second South American tour taken by the Martins. It begins with departure from New York and continues through the stop in Uruguay. Schedule of stops on the tour and map are on the third page. The Martins are accompanied by Dr. Thomas Watkins and EKG.

32

BOX 42 BINDERS 1 and 2: Vol. 14 (1921 Mar.-Apr.)Labeled “2nd Trip,” this binder includes postcards, photos, tourist notes, maps, newspaper clippings, and

correspondence that document the Martins’ travels to Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina during Mar. of 1921, a continuation of the trip that began with Cuba, Panama, Peru, and Chile. They sail on the “Ebro” accompanied by EKG.

BOX 42 BINDER 2: Vol. 14 (1921 Mar.-Apr.)The second part of Vol. 14 is devoted to travel in Brazil, with tourist information, photos, invitations,

autographs and newspaper clippings. The Martins depart South America for New York from Buenos Aires on board the S.S. “Vauban” on Apr. 5th via Montevideo, Rio, and Barbados. The names of members of the “Principle party,” “Chief stops,” “Outstanding hosts,” and “Additional items” are listed in detail on the cover sheet of the album.

BOX 43 BINDERS 1-2: Vol. 15 (1921-1922)This volume was apparently assembled from items for some reason left out of earlier volumes, and was

assembled in quite haphazard chronology. An attempt has been made to re-order pages into more of a chronological order, by making use of Section Meeting records and travel itineraries.

BOX 43 BINDER 1: Vol. 15 (1921-1922)The first part of the first binder of Vol. 15 documents the Oct. 24-28, 1921 Clinical Congress in Philadelphia,

as well as other end-of-year events in Chicago, such as the reception given Marshall Foch, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in WWI, when he arrives in Chicago in early Nov. The ACS Section Meetings are listed here in their chronology with photos, tourist information, and other scrapbook materials, particularly for activities surrounding the Birmingham, Ashville, and Allentown meetings, which takes place in Mar. and early Apr. The Martins meet their old family friend, Charles Nicola. An Apr. 17th noteworthy item is the newspaper clipping and note about the meeting arranged by Chicago socialite Mrs. Frederick D. Countiss in the interest of promoting the building of the Murphy Memorial hall and making Chicago the medical center of America. William Mayo, FHM, and other prominent surgeons attend.

BOX 43 BINDER 2: Vol. 15 (1922)The second part of Vol. 15 begins with the meetings in Portland, Maine, and Halifax, Nova Scotia which take

place in mid-May. May 22 and Memorial Day (May 28th) finds the Martins back in Chicago celebrating, with FHM in military uniform. This part of Vol. 15 concludes with documentation of Section Meetings in Canada in Sept. and Oct. An Oct. 10th newspaper clipping with photo, preceding the London, Ontario meeting, shows FHM at the White House with Red Cross personnel. Eight- and four-page sections of the South American Trip of 1920 on board the R.M.S.P. “Ebro” and in Jamaica, Peru, and Chile were removed and placed in Vol. 11.

in the travel party include Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Mayo, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smith, R.H. Harte, and Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Kahler. Notable hosts listed are: Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress W. Breenton of Melbourne, Gov. and the Countess of Stradbroke, Dr. and Mrs. J. Dunbar Hooper & Miss Lydia Hooper, Ministers of State for the Commonwealth, Sister of Charity, Gov. General and Lady Forster of Sydney, and Gordon Craig. Some poetry (possibly original?) is included. Several newspaper clippings about the “World Famous Doctors Visiting” appear here. Noteworthy are mentions of B. Hamilton Russell.

BOX 45 BINDER 2: Vol. 17 (1924 Feb. 10-Mar. 21)FHM’s diary and copies of correspondence covering the period from Feb. 10th to Mar. 21st, 1924 provide his

impressions on the trip. Correspondence is to Charles Mayo, Malcolm MacEachern, Charles Nicola, George Crile, Allan Craig of the ACS staff, and “Midget.” Of particular interest are Martin’s ruminations on the passing of President Wilson and on Martin’s visit with Wilson’s successor, Warren Harding. FHM refers, in his Feb. 26th letter to “Midget,” to the Fiji child with whom he is photographed (see Vol. 18).

BOX 46 BINDER 1: Vol. 18 (1924 Jan.-Mar.) v.2BOX 46 BINDER 2: Vol. 18 (1924 Feb.-Apr.)This scrapbook documents the Martins’ travel along the west coast of the USA on their way to Australia and

New Zealand. In addition to FHM’s diary, it includes his correspondence beginning with their arrival in Australia (Apr. 2nd), with his friend Charles Nicola (Apr. 13th), and Harvey Cushing (from Fiji, Apr. 15th) relating his impressions.

BOX 48 BINDER 1: Vol. 20 (1925 Mar.) v. 2BOX 48 BINDER 2: Vol. 20 (1925 Feb.-July) FHM DiaryPostcards, photos, maps, newspaper clippings, and notes on a trip to Italy are lovingly arranged and attached to

sheets in a 3-ring binder notebook by IHM. Beginning with Assisi, Siena, and Florence, and continuing with Bologna, Venice, Verona, Milan, Genoa, and the Riviera, IHM shows a great enthusiasm for and appreciation of geography and art history, especially the sacred art she encountered in Italy. Her arrangement, placement, and thorough inclusion of the postcards from the above listed cities could be regarded in itself as a presentation on the sacred art of Italy and ample evidence that she didn’t miss much! Accompanied by the daily diary/journal of FHM, Feb. 9, 1926 to May 1926, and looked at together, this volume illustrates what it was like for a distinguished surgeon and his wife to travel in Europe in 1925, noteworthy personages with whom they traveled or who they encountered, and relates Martin’s ruminations, appreciations, philosophy, and light-hearted and poetic thoughts. The travel party includes the Misses Kate and Midge Harris (Kate was a train bearer at the Martins’ wedding) and Mr. Irving Shuart. FHM records in detail their arrival in Rome on Mar. 4th and other Italian cities including a visit with Vittorio Putti in Bologna, arriving from Florence on Mar. 19th. George Thorne, an associate of Martin’s whom FHM called one of “a [number of] substantial business and professional men of the South Side” who were charter members of the Midlothian Country Club, appears in the scrapbook with souvenirs of his daughter Roberta Thorne Ellis’ wedding. Of the many noteworthy incidents related in Martin’s diary is an account of how he attended Sir Rickman Godlee, eminent British surgeon, descendant of Lord Lister, and first Honorary Fellow of the ACS, during his fatal heart attack.

tickets, programs, maps, and newspaper clippings from Paris and Beaulieu, Monaco and Monte Carlo, Whitchurch, London, and Southampton. It begins with the Italian Riviera and continues with ruins from World War I, paying respect to the fallen soldiers at Argonne and other places. IHM particularly records items depicting the arts and music of the places to which they travel, e.g. postcards from the Louvre. A major noteworthy item is an group of newspaper clippings and IHM’s note about the passing of Sir Rickman Godlee, who suffered a sudden attack during the Martins’ visit to his home, and the account of FHM attending him in his last hours.

Assembly of America in London, presided over by Charles Mayo. It is sponsored by the Interstate Postgraduate Assembly of America and directed by the Tri-State District Medical Association. This includes tours of London and Ireland, especially art galleries, banquets, and visits with notable British surgeons. The Martins have just returned from a trip to Europe on May 7th, and after some summer outings to the Exmoor Country Club and other places, depart again for England on May 24th. Newspaper clippings tell of the prestigious group of 1,274 travelers among whom they find themselves, including nationally recognized theater people, business leaders, and European leaders. Notable hosts are listed as: Sir Arbuthnot and Lady Lane, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Paterson, H. Gordon Selfridge, Lord Dawson of Penn, American Ambassador and Mrs. Houghton, Sir St. Clair Thomson, President of the Royal Society of Medicine, Sir William de Courcy, and Lady Wheeler.

throughout the summer of 1926, beginning in late July, during which they are accompanied by the Richard Smiths. Their travel, apparently by touring car, includes visits to old cathedrals and abbeys, local art exhibits, which always attract IHM, and dinners with their hosts. Hosts include ob/gyn and medical societies in the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Liverpool. On Aug. 31st they depart from France to return to New York, apparently staying on in Europe after the American Gynecological Club tour had returned on Aug. 7th. This volume ends with a letter to IHM from Florence Donnelly of the Gorgas Institute, enclosing letters of President Coolidge to FHM, although the letters do not appear here. Also of note is a copy of Martin’s resume, dated June 21, 1926.

BOX 54 BINDER 1: Vol. 26 (1926 Jan.-Feb.) v.3BOX 54 BINDER 2: Vol. 26 (1926 Feb.-Mar.) v.3This volume includes records of ACS Sectional Meetings and the historic but sparsely documented ACS

Community Health Meetings not found anywhere else in the ACS Archives. The purpose of these meetings was to educate patients and to promote better physician/patient communication, a very novel idea for the time. This volume includes newspaper clippings and other records of meetings in Memphis, New Orleans, Houston, Tucson, Phoenix, the San Marcos Inn in Chandler, Arizona, and Pebble Beach (?), California to attend the Pacific Coast Surgical Association’s first annual meeting. (See also: JCAH records, RG5/SG5/S8/1, Box 1.) Piecing together IHM’s calendars and materials in the volume, it appears that most of the month of Feb. is spent at the San Marcos resort and that the couple return to New York by ship via San Francisco, Los Angeles, Panama, and Cuba. It ends with a visit to Harpers Ferry, passing through by train on the way back to Chicago.

IV.B.3. Snapshots of Visitors to ACS Headquarters

BOX 74 ACS Professional Snapshots: Visitors to ACS Headquarters, 1929-1931This subseries includes 23 numbered envelopes, 1 set of index cards, and the individual snapshots listed below. All of the photos have hand-written notations on the back with names and dates. Many of the photos were

found in numbered envelopes, but others had been removed. On each of the index cards is written the name of one or more of the persons depicted in the photos, followed by the number(s) of the photos in which the person(s) appear. The numbers on the envelopes were apparently intended to correspond to the numbers on the index cards, but the numbers on the cards go only from no. 1 to no. 14 and the envelopes are numbered 1 to 23. Some of the names listed on the index cards have no corresponding photos. As found, there seemed to be no correspondence between the envelope numbers, the index card numbers, and the photos in each envelope. To improve access, the photos have been rearranged into chronological order.

IV.B.8. Personal Snapshots

BOX 88 Martins' Personal Snapshots, 1869-1936, bulk 1890-1936This subseries consists primarily of snapshots but also includes some negatives, a few brief manuscript items, a

few photo postcards, some stereo images, and some studio portraits. The snapshots are printed in a range of sizes beginning with the smallest (about 2 ¾” x 2”) and going to larger ones having a maximum height of about 4” and a maximum width of about 6”. The photos show Franklin and Isabelle, their families, friends, and colleagues. They document their travels, vacations, country clubs, social activities, and significant buildings.

Photo-sized folders are arranged in chronological order. When the date is unknown, an estimated date has been assigned (see Note on Dates). The folders are labeled with the date or estimated date (in the form yyyymmdd) followed by a second number representing the record of the database from which the file inventory is derived. Folders with the same date are subfiled by the secondary number.

Note on Dates: Very few of the photos came with date annotations and some that do have dates have incorrect ones. Only in cases where the date is quite certain, or fairly certain, are they given in this description without a question mark. Any date in this description that is marked by a question mark has been estimated and was assigned solely for the purposes of this arrangement. Some of the estimated dates are fairly certain and others are quite uncertain. Some estimated dates are based on annotations and other evidence found in the Memoirs. Some are based on facts, such as the date the Murphy building was finished or the date of FHM’s death, both of which were used as limits for estimated date ranges. Some others are based on less reliable evidence, for example, the styles of women’s clothing. Existing evidence supporting an estimated date is generally given as part of the description so that it may be weighed against new evidence that may appear at a later time.

Care was taken in assigning estimated dates to the images, but often the evidence they were based on is very

48

scanty. Therefore, great caution must be exercised in taking these dates at face value. The bulk of this collection spans little more than three decades, and any given estimated date may be off by a decade or more.

Note on Descriptive Texts: The descriptive text for each photo “set” includes the number and type of items in the folder, keywords related to the content of the image, and in some cases, other notes. Examples of keywords in the descriptive texts include: Hollister, Carlin, Humburch (family), Nicola, Harris (friends), Mayo, Crowell, Cubbins (colleagues), Murphy, Nickerson, Central Hall (buildings), Exmoor, Midlothian (country clubs), and car. “Unident” is used as the abbreviation for “unidentified.”

Note on Physical Processing: All duplicates were retained. Since their number is relatively small, there seemed to be no advantage in weeding them from the collection. Sets of photos are housed in “Folders” that take four different forms. Single photo “sets” are housed in polyester fold-lock sleeves (4” x 6”). Other sets are housed in: buff acid-free paper envelopes cut in half (4 ½” x 6”), polyethylene pockets (5 ¼” x 7 3/8”), and white acid-free paper envelopes (4 3/8” x 5 3/8”). Available supplies of any one of these folder formats were insufficient to enable the use of the same one for all photos. Some deteriorating cellulose acetate negatives were interleaved with acid-free paper. Duplicate prints and negatives were stored together in the same folder as the print.

Note on Arrangement: The snapshots, as they were found in 2008, were not in any coherent order. It appeared that at least one attempt at arrangement had been made at an earlier date. This probably happened sometime after they were transferred from IHM’s estate to the College, sometime after her death in 1945. The photos are in sets of one or more individual snapshots and are arranged, insofar as possible, by date. The process of arriving at a rough chronological order is described below. A chronological arrangement was chosen as most suitable, not only because it illustrates the progression of the depicted events over time, but also because it may facilitate identification of the currently unidentified or misidentified persons and events depicted in the photos and because it may aid in providing refinements of, or corrections to, those dates which are at present only estimated.

1) Preliminary arrangement:Most of the prints had a film processor’s code rubber-stamped on the back. The photos were sorted according

to this code in numerical order, disregarding any alphabetical suffixes or prefixes. This made it possible to gather all the prints and duplicates from one roll of film together into a set. The assumption was made that all of the photos processed in the same numbered batch would have been taken within days or weeks of each other. These sets then were filed temporarily by processor’s code, making it possible to find a given set during second step (chronological arrangement).

Not all photos had a processor’s code stamped on the back. For these, sometimes sets could be made based on evidence such as the fact that a single small group of photos was found together as a group, they were the same size, they were printed on the same type of paper, or they depicted the same event.

Photo sets and single photos without this code were arranged by date, if a date could be determined, or by subject if it could not.

At this point, there were three series of photos: sets filed by processor’s code, sets and singles filed by date, and sets and singles filed by subject.

2) Chronological arrangement:A database, with one record for each set or single photo not belonging to a set (hereinafter referred to as a

set), was set up with the following five elements: Record ID number, Date, Sorting Date, Processor’s Code, and Notes.

Below are examples of sorting dates and the Date fields from which they are derived:Date Sorting Date19250000 192519250000 1925?19250000 Circa 192519265030 Spring 192618990600 Summer 189919230900 Fall 192319281200 Winter 1928

49

19150900 September 191519320704 July 4, 193219310801 About August 1, 193119200000 1920s

In the Notes field, a short physical description of the set was entered on the first line, usually the number of unique snapshots, the number of duplicates if any, and the number of negatives if any. On the next line, a description of the contents of the image was entered, usually in keyword fashion. No attempt was made to apply a controlled vocabulary, but single concepts were entered in a single form, for example “car” is never entered as auto. Sometimes reference was made to the source of identifications if it was not notations on the print itself or accompanying materials. The Memoirs were often consulted for help with identifications and dates.

As information about each set was recorded in the database, the folder for each set was labeled in pencil for filing by Sorting Date followed by Record ID (circled). The Processor’s Code was noted right after that. The Record ID was circled to further distinguish it (other than by its position) from the Processor’s Code, for example, “19320713 (32) 92.” In this example, July 13, 1932 is the Sorting Date, 32 is the Record ID, and 92 is the Processor’s Code. The folder is filed by the Sorting Date and subfiled by the Record ID. The Processor’s Code is not needed for filing, but is recorded on the label as information.

Note on the manuscript annotations found on the photos and accompanying materials:There are some annotations on the photos in black fountain pen ink in FHM’s handwriting. Some others have

annotations in pencil in IHM’s handwriting. This note is a discussion of a third class of annotations.Annotations in blue ballpoint pen ink, both on the backs of photos and on separate accompanying slips of

paper, are in an unknown hand. This writing shows no resemblance to Dr. G.W. Stephenson’s handwriting. It looks similar to Eleanor K. Grimm’s handwriting, but for reasons explained below, this theory was discounted. It might be Dr. Padberg’s or Marguerite Prime’s, either of whom would have been looking at the photos at a much later date than when they were taken.

Because of her close relationship with the Martins, EKG must be considered a reliable source of information on most if not all of the events depicted in the photos. And because some of the information in that hand is inaccurate, this cast doubt on the idea that the blue handwriting is hers.

Additional evidence supports this. Take, for example, a set of about 32 small format prints (about 2 ¾” x 2”) that were accompanied by a slip of paper with the annotation “All look like Europe 1925?” in the blue ballpoint pen ink handwriting. But penciled directly on the backs of the photos in IHM’s hand is “S.F. Fair.” And the only other prints of this size were annotated snapshots from a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The women’s clothing, also, resembled the fashions of the previous decade rather than that of the 1920s. A look through the results of a Google search for “San Francisco Fair” turned up a site with an image from the San Francisco 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. A Google image search for the full name of this exposition turned up a wealth of images including some from the University of California’s Calisphere site. There are over 150 images of the fair in Calisphere, and a comparison of those with the snapshot images confirmed that the photos were not taken in Europe in 1925, but in San Francisco at the 1915 Exposition.

Another example is a photo taken on July 13, 1932. In the Martin Memoirs, this snapshot has annotations in IHM’s hand identifying the woman on the far left as (not quite legible) “Mrs. Soliday.” In this loose snapshot collection however, it has an annotation on the back in blue ballpoint pen ink identifying the woman as “Ekg” (Eleanor K. Grimm). It is hard to imagine that either IHM or EKG would have misidentified the woman in the photo as EKG if she is not. This would seem to confirm that the blue handwriting is not EKG’s. Comparing the July 13, 1932 photo to one from summer of 1933 (in the set of Processor’s Code 59), which is obviously a photo of EKG, we can see that Mrs. Soliday is not the same person. It seems safe to assume, not only that the blue handwriting is not EKG’s, but also that the annotations of the real writer should be regarded with less than complete confidence.

Non-Paper FormatsPhotographs

Physical ConditionBrittle paper; deacidification treatment by Scott Kellar, June 2004.

NotesPreferred Citation: American College of Surgeons, Franklin H. and Isabelle H. Martin Papers, [Box and file

no.]: [Identification of item], [Date, if available]

Processing Notes:

While most of the papers are original, a small number of them were so brittle that they have been replaced with photocopies or (in the case of some bound items) photocopies with preservation bindings. In a very few cases, the original documents were considered sturdy enough to be used as access copies, but were treated with de-acidification and preservation binding. The originals that have been replaced with copies are stored separately from the Martin Papers and are available for viewing on request in the Archives reading room. Original bindings are also stored separately and available for viewing on request. In cases where the access copy is a reproduction, the item is described as such.

Six non-consecutive sheets of an inventory that was created before 1956 and possibly as early as shortly after Isabelle Martin’s death in 1945, was found among the papers. The sheets itemize by category the contents of so called boxes 3, 7, 8, 17, 18 and 19, none of which were found. Although most of the items listed were found, they were not in the order listed, nor grouped together in the way found on the list. This original list is included (see “Early inventories of the Martin Papers” at the beginning of the file inventory below), along with a copy of a cover letter of a memo, dated Feb. 23, 1956 from Mr. Sandrok to L.M. Prime, explaining where the materials should be kept, “behind the Regents Chairs.” In 2002, the materials were found in filing cabinets in the basement and 6th floor of the Murphy Memorial Building, along with all the other archival materials preserved by acting archivist George W. Stephenson. An inventory of Martin’s correspondence, in the order in which it was found, is included with the original partial inventory.
