Overview of Licensure
Teach For America – Memphis is an alternative licensing body in the state of Tennessee. This means that upon successfully meeting all of our program requirements each year and meeting state expectations such as passing required Praxis II exams, completing licensure documentation, etc., you are qualified to teach in a TN classroom. As such, you are not required to attend any other educational institution during your two years in our program.
In order to meet state and program requirements, all teachers must take and pass two exams which depend on their tentative assignment. This document will provide you with information on the initial steps you must take in order to make a smooth transition into a Memphis classroom. While we will recommend
multiple resources and test taking strategies for you to access in order to prepare for your tests and to assist you in the registration process, it is ultimately your responsibility to take and pass all of your exams.
Please note that corps members who do not pass their exam(s) may be unable to teach in Memphis and may need to request a
deferral to join the 2018 corps. For this reason, we strongly urge you to begin preparing now as you work to meet the Praxis II deadlines outlined further down in this document. We have found that when corps members have planned ahead and prepared adequately, they have been able to pass these exams.
LICENSURE INTRODUCTION Upon meeting initial licensure and program requirements in advance of institute and during institute, our program will recommend you for a TN Practitioner teaching license. This license is valid for three years and will allow you to teach for your two years in our program. In order to be recommended for specific endorsements on your license AND allow you to teach in TN, Praxis II exams are required both in advance
of your first year of teaching as well as in your first and second year of
teaching. Please know that our team sets testing deadlines for you both before and during your time in our program in order to best set you up to meet our program expectations as they- and their associated deadlines- are communicated so that we can ensure you are properly following state
procedure and protocol. YEAR 0: You are required to pass your two (2) Year Zero Praxis exams following confirmation of your offer. The exams you take will depend on your tentative assignment area. YEAR 1:
You will then have 1-2 additional exams to take in your first year of teaching. Our team will alert you to the deadlines for this as well as when to complete necessary paperwork at the end of institute in order for us to submit it on your behalf so that you can obtain a Tennessee Practitioner teaching license. YEAR 2:
After completing their first year of teaching, corps members who have met all licensure requirements set by Teach For America – Memphis and our district partners will have one (1) final exam to take in their second year. These corps members will also be recommended for ongoing licensure into their second year by our program.

REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSURE Basic qualifications for licensure are set by the state of Tennessee and
your employing school or district may also set additional requirements. Together, this set of requirements constitutes the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) standards for our partner school districts. These are the standards used to determine whether or not someone is qualified to teach. Tennessee is a “test-in” state, meaning that you can qualify for
an initial teaching license by passing a specific set of required exams. You will be qualified to teach in Tennessee as long as you meet one of the following criteria:
Graduated without a Degree from a Teacher Education Program
Corps members with degrees in fields other than education pursue an alternative path toward licensure. Eligible candidates, such as the
majority of our corps members, submit a license application to the Tennessee Department of Education (our program helps to facilitate this process). To qualify for an initial license, competence in an endorsement (subject) area must be demonstrated in ONE of the following ways:
1. Applicant has a passing score on at least one of the Praxis II content knowledge exams OR
2. Undergraduate major PLEASE NOTE: Corps members who demonstrate competence by major will still be expected by our team to take the associated PRAXIS II exam as it will still be required by the state for licensure advancement and taking it now will allow the corps member to complete the task prior to the start of their two-year commitment.
Graduated from a Teacher Education Program in Tennessee
Corps members who have completed a preparation program at an approved teacher education institution in Tennessee AND passed the required Praxis exams can be recommended for a teaching license by the Dean of Education and the Certification Office of the college/university they attended. However, please know that the
structure and content of teacher education programs vary widely across the state of Tennessee. Teach For America– Memphis has no jurisdiction over decisions involving existing in-state licensure, nor do we have the authority to process licensure paperwork for teachers who have followed a traditional teacher preparation route. Our ability to work with candidates who do not certify via our program is limited by virtue of the fact that we are not in a position to comment on your testing/coursework history or recommend you for licensure ourselves. However, we are committed to explaining this in more detail and so will be hosting a licensure call specifically for all confirmed applicants coming from an education background the week following the end of the confirmation window. Until that call, we ask that no corps member begins this process without first consulting our team. If you have any thoughts or questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected]. No corps member should begin looking into this process without consulting our team.
Graduated from a Teacher Education Program Outside of Tennessee
Due to recent state, licensure policy changes enacted in September 2015, pursuing a path to try and transfer your out of state credentials to TN is actually not financially advantageous for a teacher. As such, corps members who have completed an education preparation program at a teacher education institution outside of Tennessee will still be expected to take two Praxis II exams as a member of our Memphis corps and use our program as their licensure body in the state of TN. We will do our best to support you in at least having one endorsement on your TN license that is similar to your out of state license, if possible, but we are unable to make any promises about this and will need to determine this possibility on a case by case basis. We are committed to explaining this in more detail and so will be hosting office hours for accepted applicants coming from an out of state education program to join. Please be on the lookout for those call-in logistics in our regional communication. If you have any thoughts or questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected].

Testing Action Items and Preparation
TESTING OVERVIEW All Memphis corps members must take and pass two (2) Initial Year Zero Praxis II exams. The first exam is required in order for you to be eligible to teach the subject area/grade span associated to your tentative assignment (referred to as your “tentative assignment exam(s)”). The second exam is required in order to make you eligible to teach all general subjects areas (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies) at the middle school level, grades 4-8 (this exam is referred to as your “second exam”). Upon passing your tentative assignment exam and the second exam, you are thereby eligible for ample placement opportunities in our region. Please know, however, that at the beginning of the placement season you will only be interviewed for vacancies associated to your tentative assignment area. However, as we get closer to the summer and per partners’ placement needs, our team may also talk to you about promoting you for placement associated to your second exam. You will be required to take a diagnostic for your “tentative assignment exam” to help inform your creation of a Praxis preparation plan and give our team direction in how we support you. If you do not pass your tentative assignment exam diagnostic, our team will immediately discuss with you your next steps to ensure we are best setting you up for successful placement in our region. We will discuss the placement process in more depth once your onboarding process begins at the close of the confirmation window.
WHICH SPECIFIC EXAMS MUST I TAKE? Due to both testing requirements associated to specific licensure endorsements in TN and the identified placement needs of our partners, our program has set unique testing requirements for our
corps members. The specific Year Zero exams our corps members must take will depend on their tentative assignment. Please continue for more information, review page 7 for information on registering, and then review the second half of this document for details on each exam(s) required for each endorsement area: All corps members irrespective of their tentative assignment must
take two (2) Praxis II exams. The first is associated to their tentative assignment. See below for a list of tentative assignments and then continue to pg. 8 for the specific exam:
- Biology - Chemistry - Early Childhood Education PreK-3 - Elementary K-6 - English - English as a Second Language - History - Mathematics - Spanish - Special Education
All corps members (except for corps members placed in ESL) must
then take the following exam in order to be eligible to be recommended for a Middle Grades 4-8 endorsement as well.
- Middle School: Content Knowledge (5146)
All corps members tentatively placed in ESL must then take the following exam to be eligible to be recommended for an Elementary (K-6) Endorsement as well.
- Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (5018) Please note that the above information pertains to the initial testing required prior to your arrival in Memphis. You will receive additional information about the final exam required at the beginning of your first year of teaching.

KEY TESTING PREPARATION (~VARIES BY PERSON)
Passing Praxis II exams is required in order to be hired by and teach in our partner school districts, charters, and ECE sites. If you do not take and pass the required test/s, you will not be able to be placed in a Memphis classroom. While we will recommend resources for you to use in this document and on our regional Onboarding Hub after the confirmation window closes to assist in the registration and preparation processes, it is ultimately your responsibility to take and pass all of your exams. Those who do not pass will be unable to teach the specific content area associated to the exam in Memphis and may need to request a deferral to join the 2018 corps. For this reason, we strongly urge you to begin preparing now. We have found that when corps members plan ahead, they are more comfortable taking exams.
WHEN CAN I TAKE A TEST? Most, if not all, of the Praxis exams are only offered in a computer format. Computer-delivered exams may be taken Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays) at approved testing centers. Since test appointments are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and seating is limited, we recommend that you register for your Praxis exams as soon as possible after receiving your subject assignment from our office. Each exam is only offered during specific testing windows and even then, availability may vary per the region of the country where you are trying to test. As such, we definitely recommend you research your options now taking into account your cohort’s deadlines and the options within your area. As part of registering for the Praxis, you will be required to submit a registration fee for each exam taken. There is a nonrefundable registration fee of $50 charged once per testing year (September through August). This charge is applied to the first exam registration of the testing year. Additional fees are charged for late registration. For more information or to find out the specific cost of Praxis tests and services, please visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/about/fees.
TESTING SCOPE AND SEQUENCE
The following pages contain the testing scope and sequence for each endorsement area. Friendly reminders as you begin to review your exam information below:

to meet these deadlines. • Register for your test(s) according to the instructions above. • You MUST forward us ([email protected]) the
confirmation emails you receive once you register (otherwise, we will NOT know that you have completed this mandatory action item).
• Be sure to include all three score recipients for each of your exams located at the end of this document.
• Prepare for your exams using information provided by our team or your own preparation methods. They are critical to securing placement and obtaining licensure as a 2017 Memphis corps member.

“I used the book published by REA and the book published by Cliff Notes. I believe they are the only two books of substance on the market for the Praxis Math Content exam...The focus of the exam was really advanced algebra and trigonometry with calculus and statistics. I would suggest borrowing these textbooks from a friend or the library and possibly a College Algebra book if you're rusty on the more basic content as well.”
The REA prep book can be found for about $20 here on Amazon. The Cliffs test prep can be found for about $20 here on Amazon.

TEST PREPARATION
IMPORTANCE
Test preparation and passage is fully your responsibility. We cannot stress enough the importance of prioritizing test preparation. These exams can go into great depth and breadth, be very difficult, and have different types of questions. They can also be longer than previously taken standardized tests. Unfortunately, we have had corps members fail these exams despite having majored in the same field as the exams they took. As noted below, the consequences of failing to prepare for a test are significant and costly.
• You must pass your tests before you can begin teaching.
Those who do not pass may be unable to teach in Memphis
and may need to request a deferral to join the 2018 corps. • While test passage itself is not presently an indicator of
teacher’s effectiveness, building content knowledge in your license area will better prepare you for the 1st day of school.
• Retaking tests is expensive.
PREPARATION It is crucial to budget enough time to thoroughly prepare for the actual test. We have found in the past that corps members spent anywhere from 10-25 total hours in order to adequately prepare for Praxis exams. Below we have included key steps to consider when planning your test preparation.
• Understand what the test covers • Diagnose how well you know the test material
• Gather study materials • Plan and organize your time • Practice explaining the key concepts • Learn how questions will be scored
SUPPORT & RESOURCES Our region has compiled several test prep resources including free; online information; recorded calls for preparing for specific exams, recommendations from corps members who passed the exams; and contact information of current corps members willing to connect with incoming corps members for test prep; etc. We definitely recommend you set aside adequate time to prepare for each exam given how critical they are to your ability to both secure placement and become licensed in Tennessee and as a member of Teach For America – Memphis. All corps members will receive more information about these resources during an optional Praxis Prep conference call to be held during the confirmation window as well as mandatory conference calls to be held following the close of the confirmation window. Specific dates are forthcoming.
FINAL GENERAL TIPS We strongly encourage you to register for the earliest possible test date in order to facilitate early placement and to allow time to retake your exam if necessary. We also encourage you to begin studying for your exams as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that you must register for your tests several weeks prior to the actual testing dates. If you do not meet the registration deadline or you mistakenly sign up for the wrong tests you may be subject to late registration fees and change request fees. (Note: regions, you can indicate here too that they may receive more detailed information after they accept our offer). If you are in need of special testing accommodations, please visit www.ets.org for
more information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to be licensed while teaching in Memphis?
Yes. In order to meet city and state regulations and to be considered a “highly-qualified” teacher in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act, you must be certified by the state of Tennessee.
Which endorsements will be present on my license?
Corps members must take and pass two initial Year Zero exams in order to maintain two endorsements throughout your two years in the program. These endorsements will qualify you for your teaching position (subject/grade level) while also maintaining your placement flexibility in our region. For example, if a corps member is tentatively given an English assignment yet is hired in a middle school classroom
due to partner placement needs and passed all three initial PRAXIS II exams, then their license will have the English 7-12 and Middle Grades 4-8 endorsements. These endorsements qualify the corps member to teach at the middle school level but also reflect the fact that the corps member already passed their English exam. More information on this will be explained once your onboarding process begins at the close of the confirmation window and throughout the summer.
PLEASE NOTE that if you are a corps member who already holds an out-of-state license, our team will provide separate information throughout your onboarding process.
When should I take the Praxis exams?
You must take your Year Zero Praxis II tests per the deadlines outlined in the Dates and Deadlines section on page 7 of this document. If you
have Year One Praxis II tests, you will be triggered to take them by the first half of your first year in the corps. Your Year Two Praxis II test must be taken by the first half of your second year.
Do I have to take the exams in Tennessee?
No. You should choose the testing location that works best for your schedule, budget, and testing preference. Can I take two Praxis exams on the same day?
Yes. Corps members are allowed to take two exams on the same day and find that although it is a long day of testing, it is feasible. However, please keep in mind that each exam is 2-2.5+ hours so plan accordingly if you
do not feel comfortable taking exams back to back. What if I don't pass my Praxis exams?
If you do not pass one of your exams, you must retake it in order to be qualified to teach the associated content area and have placement flexibility in our region. If you do not pass either exam, you must retake and pass at least one in order to remain a 2017 corps member as we are unable to place you in a Memphis classroom without sufficient content
mastery (as generally demonstrated by the Praxis exams). If you have concerns about the financial and/or time commitment about retaking an exam, please contact our team and we will be able to discuss this with you. Will I be reimbursed for the costs associated with the licensure process (Praxis exams, preparation materials)?
Teach For America does not pay for licensure requirements. Therefore, we are not able to reimburse you for these costs. If you are concerned about these costs, you can apply for needs-based financial assistance. Because the financial assistance application requires many supporting documents, we recommend you apply as soon as possible if this is a priority. Contact the CM Finance Team at [email protected] for more information. The Memphis office does not handle any matters related to nationally-
provided needs-based financial assistance, so please direct all inquiries to the national team using the contact information provided.
