Catholic Character

We welcome you warmly into our New Brighton Catholic School ( Mary Immaculate ) Community and hope that you will become an interested and active member of our School.

Our Founding Order is Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM).

New Brighton Catholic School ( Mary Immaculate ) aims to care for your child as an individual and encourages pupils to care for others in a Catholic way. It is the aim of the School to provide specific Catholic teachings in Gospel truths and virtues which will permeate the day with a message of love and vitality of Christ’s presence within a caring and Catholic environment. All teachers understand their responsibility to both promote and therefore to protect this Special Character. Through our Catholic Character, we invite our pupils to personal faith in God and seek to develop the whole person in an environment where Gospel truths, as handed on by the Church, are taught and practised. It is our privilege and responsibility to ensure your children have the best possible education, both spiritually and academically. The School Programme Our Religious Education programme is not an isolated subject - Catholic virtues permeate the whole programme. Our Virtues Programme is Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. We begin our week with assembly at 8.45 am on Monday to pray together and to introduce that week’s virtue, and parents/ caregivers are encouraged to join us. The Class Programme Religious Education is integrated into the total life of the classroom. Each class learns primarily from the curriculum (in digital format for teaching) as set out by the Bishops of Aotearoa, and makes Religious Education a priority in their class programme. Each day begins and ends with a prayer. The Family Whanau Book assists parents/caregivers to follow the School’s programmes in Religious Education - on line at http://www.faithalive.org.nz/assets/Resources/Family-whanau-book.pdf Prayer Prayer is an integral part of the total life of the School. Regular prayer has a vital place in the classroom, assemblies, and the staff life of the School. Parents are invited to join their children in classroom prayer at the beginning of the day. Buddy Prayers Yr 6/7/8 pupils lead small House groups of Yr 1-5 pupils in prayer on Wednesday mornings. Masses and Liturgies Active participation in Church liturgies is a regular feature of New Brighton Catholic School ( Mary Immaculate ) life. We attend masses and participate in school liturgies. Parents and family are welcome and encouraged to attend masses and liturgies. The Diocese Attendance Dues The Catholic Diocese of Christchurch charges Attendance Dues which help pay for the loans on, and maintenance and improvement of school land and buildings. It is a condition of enrolment and attendance. An invoice is sent to each family at the beginning of each term. Payment is due in full at the beginning of the term or can be made in regular automatic instalments. Cheques are to be made out to Catholic Parish of New Brighton St Mary Attendance Dues.   Please note: This is not a New Brighton Catholic School account. It is a Parish/Diocese account. See the back page for the correct account number.

Technology Year 7 & 8 pupils attend the Linwood Technology Centre, 39 Nursery Road, Phillipstown, on Tuesday afternoons to learn technology using different mediums, eg plastics and metal. Pupils travel by bus, returning to school at 3 pm. Learning at Home Learning at home is expected in reading, spelling, basic facts, and RE. Home learning expectations will be communicated to parents at meetings at the beginning of each school year. NBC also has our Footsteps Quest Challenge to encourage parent/pupil learning and involvement in a fun and meaningful way. Information Technology We are a Manaiakalani Outreach School which has a pedagogy of Learn Create Share through the use of IT. ( www.manaiakalani.org ) Students have access to the internet which has security filtering through the Ministry of Education’s Network for Learning (N4L). Parents are asked to sign and go over the Cybersmart Student User Agreement with their children, and from Yr 4 the students, themselves, are asked to co-sign the agreement. (Please refer to the Cybersmart Student User Agreement Information at the end of the booklet.) Reporting to Parents Formal reporting to parents occurs four times a year: Twice yearly Parent/Teacher/Pupil Conferences Terms 2 & 4 Interim mid-year and final end of year written reports

If your child is absent and you have not advised us and we are unable to contact you, we will contact your alternative numbers. The police may be called. Please ensure your contact details are up to date. Your support is crucial and appreciated.

● All students arriving late report to the Office before going to class to ensure that they are marked as present on the roll.

● Parents are reminded of the importance of avoiding taking family holidays in term time as this has a significant impact on your child’s learning and is deemed an unjustified absence by the Ministry of Education. On the rare occasions when you may have to take your child out of school for a period of time, it is important to inform the Principal in advance.

Health

Healthy Living/Nutrition ● In the interests of children’s health and safety, lollies (including The Natural Confectionary

Company’s dinosaurs and snakes, etc.), chocolate bars and chewing gum are not allowed at school. Please keep treats, chippies, twisties, junk food for after school treats.

● Students drink water only and are asked to have a named personal water bottle at school every day. They are not shared. Along with the Te Ara Cluster, we are following Dr Kathleen Liberty’s Well Being Intervention Strategies. Adequate water intake improves concentration, mental/ physical coordination, acts as a stress release and enhances communication and social skills. Children are encouraged to sip water regularly and freely throughout class time.

● Children receive a sandwich at 9.30am each day.

Birthday Cakes As a general rule, please keep children’s birthday cakes and treats out of school.

Birthdays Please be mindful of invites excluding a few children in a class. This doesn’t fit with our United virtue and causes unnecessary friendship rifts.

Injured or Sick Students In case of sickness or injury, students are sent to the office for assessment and further action as required. If the sickness or injury is considered to require hospital treatment, eg broken leg, an ambulance will be called (which may incur a charge to the parents) and parents notified. It is really important that your phone and emergency contact numbers are kept up-to-date. If a child takes a knock to the head, regardless of its severity, parents will be informed. Students should not be sent to school if sick. If you are unsure and so send your child, please do not tell them to phone if they feel worse … they will!

Medication NBC has a Medication Policy to keep staff and students safe and to monitor the administering of required medications to the correct patient. All medication must be handed into the office, where it will be administered, and parents/caregivers are required to complete a Consent to Give Medicine form. (Children keep their asthma inhalers in their classrooms – please name your child’s inhaler.)

Public Health Nurse The CDHB provides the Public Health Nursing Service which is a free and confidential health service for school-aged children and their families. If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s health or well being, contact our school’s Public Health Nurse tel. 383 6877.

Sunblock As sunblock requires application and some children are allergic to it, sunblock use (and application) is the responsibility of parents.

Vision An annual Government funding contribution for an eye exam and spectacles for children up to age 15 years is available to Community Services Cardholders.

Emergency Procedures NBC has procedures for fire, earthquake and tsunami which are available at the office for your information so that you will know what and where the pupils will be in the case of an evacuation.

In the event of school closure or evacuation, only custodial parents/caregivers will be allowed to collect children from the emergency assembly point which is the concrete pad immediately outside the NBC gate to the Domain.

Students’ Cell Phones These are be left at the office during the school day to avoid cell phone misuse. Failure to do so will result in the cell phone being confiscated for a week. A parent may

personally come in and collect it within that week, at which time they will be reinformed of our Cell Phone Procedure. School Entrance Children may enter and leave the school grounds through either the Lonsdale Street main entrance or the Domain gate, both are open from 8.20 am. Page 11: Information Booklet 2019 - Google Docsnew.newbrightoncatholic.school.nz/wp...Booklet...1.pdf · Information Booklet ... (in digital format for teaching) as set out by the Bishops

Transport Car Parking The Church and staff car parks are not to be used by parents before or after school as a dropping off or collecting place as this is a safety zone for children. (Exceptions are made for Mobility Parking Permit holders.)

Pick Up and Drop Off – P1 Zone School days: 8.15-9.15am and 2.15-3.15pm A Parking 1 Minute area operates outside the School. This Pick Up/Drop Off zone has a teacher on duty after school to guide children into cars. Please: ● Ensure your name sign is visible on the passenger visor, this makes for easy identification of cars

by teachers on duty (especially in the rain!) More signs are available upon request to the Office. ● Allow time for your child to get out to the zone from their classroom - 2.50-3 pm is good. If

your child isn’t at the P1, you will be asked to move on. ● Indicate when entering the P1 - this lets the long queue behind you know what you are doing. ● Indicate when leaving the P1 - this lets our Road Wardens know you are coming out of the P1. ● No U-turns out of P1 - safety for all. ● Do not hover and move onto the yellow lines. We won’t load your child on yellow lines. Please speak to your child about respecting your time. Please be polite to the staff who are helping you. Kea Crossing NBC operates a Kea Crossing from 8.30 am - 8.45 am and from 2.45 pm - 3 pm. Please respect the instructions of the traffic wardens, and we ask all adults to model the Crossing’s use always. Bicycles All bikes are to be walked in the school grounds. We recommend our students lock their bikes to the bikestands. Remember: by law children must wear helmets.

Skateboards/Scooters Skateboards/scooters are walked in the school grounds, but may be used on the concrete in the Domain. Skateboards can be safely placed upside down under the bench in the learning areas. We recommend scooters be locked to the scooter-stands. Car Booster seats In the case of an emergency, we have booster seats available at school. Children under 8 years must be in a booster seat when travelling in a car. Public Transport Students travelling to and from school or on school trips are required to maintain a high standard of  behaviour and to be in full school uniform, unless stated otherwise.

SchoolDocs New Brighton Catholic policies are available online. You can access them and, when it is time, review them by going to:

schooldocs.co.nz and searching for New Brighton Catholic Username: nbc Password: footsteps

Click on Current Review , then on the highlighted policy. Policies under review are advised in the newsletter. If you don't have internet access, school office staff can easily provide you with printed copies of the policy and the review form.

Cybersmart Student User Agreement Information

This background information may be helpful as you read through and discuss the Cybersmart Student User Agreement

with your child. There are 15 rules to help keep students cybersafe as outlined in the Cybersmart User Student

Agreement that you have been asked to sign (included in the enrolment pack). The term “parent” used throughout

this document also refers to caregivers and legal guardians.

● I know I cannot use the school digital devices until my parent(s) have signed the Cybersmart User Agreement and it has been returned to school. All students must have a Cybersmart Student User Agreement signed by their parent. Year 4-8 students sign their

user agreements along with their parents. User agreements are an essential part of a cybersmart policy and

programmes for schools and other organisations.

● I can only use the computers and other school digital devices for my school work. ○ This helps to ensure the equipment is available when students need to use it for their learning.

○ It will also help to reduce the likelihood of any inappropriate activities taking place which put the safety of the

learning environment at risk.

● If I am unsure whether I am allowed to do something involving digital devices, I will ask the teacher first. ○ This helps children to take responsibility for their own actions and seek advice when they are unsure of what

to do.

○ It provides an opportunity for the teacher and child to work through an issue, and to avoid the child making

an unwise decision which could possibly lead to serious consequences.

● If I have my own username, I will log on only with that username. I will not allow anyone else to use my username. ○ The username is the unique identity by which the network recognises an individual. There are never two users

with the same username and this allows the school to track the activity of any student.

○ A username could be misused if a student’s password was known and then used by others.

● I will not tell anyone else my password. ○ Passwords perform two main functions. Firstly, they help to ensure only approved persons can access the

school digital devices. Secondly, they are used to track how those facilities are used.

○ Knowing how the equipment is being used and by whom helps the school to maintain a cybersafe

environment for all users, and teaches the child the importance of personal security.

● I can only go online or access the Internet at school when a teacher gives permission and an adult is present. ○ There must be an educational purpose for children being online or accessing the Internet at school. Having an

adult present (teacher or teacher’s aide) will help to ensure children’s safety.

● I will always use New Brighton Catholic’s virtues when communicating on the internet ○ ‘Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus’ is New Brighton Catholic’s programme to make our Catholic Virtues a living

integral part of our school life and my use of Digital Technologies will reflect this. I will use Digital Technologies

to communicate with others in meaningful, positive ways.

○ This helps strengthen Digital Citizenship for myself and my school peers and avoids antisocial activities.

● While at school, I will not: ○ Attempt to search for things online that I know are not acceptable at our school. This could include anything

that is rude or violent or uses unacceptable language such as swearing.

○ Make any attempt to get around, or bypass, security, monitoring and filtering that is in place at our school.

■ The school has a number of steps in place to prevent students accessing inappropriate or illegal material.

Page 13: Information Booklet 2019 - Google Docsnew.newbrightoncatholic.school.nz/wp...Booklet...1.pdf · Information Booklet ... (in digital format for teaching) as set out by the Bishops

■ The students also have an individual role to play in this process by not attempting to access information they know will not be acceptable at school.

■ Disciplinary procedures will result if a student is attempting to bypass school internet filtering or security systems.

● If I find anything that upsets me, is mean or rude, or things I know are unacceptable at our school, I will not show others, but will turn off the screen and get a teacher straight away. ○ The school has taken a number of steps to prevent unsafe material from being accessed. However, there

always remains the possibility that a student may inadvertently stumble across something inappropriate. ○ Encouraging the student to tell a teacher immediately if they find something which they suspect may be

inappropriate encourages critical thinking and helps children to take responsibility for their actions and keep themselves and others safe.

○ Being a good digital citizen is something that we all have to work at. If I know that my friends are having problems online, I will try to help them, or speak to an adult. If I see that someone is being unfairly treated online then I will speak up rather than just watch it happen. This way, they contribute to the cybersafety of the school community.

● I understand that I must not download or copy any files such as music, videos, games or programmes

without the permission of a teacher. This is to ensure we are following copyright laws. ○ Many files available on the internet are covered by copyright and although they can be easily downloaded, it

may be illegal to do so. ○ Sometimes these files can contain malicious content such as viruses, spyware programs or even inappropriate,

age-restricted or illegal material. We do this to keep our software safe so we can continue to use it in the future, and to protect our children.

● I will not connect any device (such as a USB drive, camera or phone) to school digital devices or run any software without a teacher’s permission. This includes wireless technologies. o Connecting devices and installing software brought from home may cause conflicts with the school digital

systems. o The school must also abide by software licensing requirements included with software. This means that if the

school has not purchased the software, the school may not be legally entitled to install it.

● The school cybersmart rules apply to any digital device brought to school, like a mobile phone. ○ The school has additional rules regarding when a mobile phone may be used at school. ○ The rules outlined in this document govern the safe and responsible use of all digital devices.

● I will ask my teacher’s permission before I put any personal information online. I will also get permission from any other person involved. Personal information can include names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and photos. This is part of our students ongoing Digital Citizenship. Students keep their private details safe and secure from the outside world.

● I will respect all school digital devices and treat digital devices with care. This includes not intentionally disrupting the smooth running of any school digital systems, not attempting to hack or gain unauthorised access to any system, following all school cybersmart rules, not joining in if other students choose to be irresponsible with digital devices, and reporting any breakages/damage to a staff member. o In addition to promoting student safety, the rules help the school to protect the considerable investments

made in expensive digital equipment. o Intentionally disrupting digital systems will be seen by the school as intentionally setting out to disrupt the

learning of others. o On occasion I may share my screen with others. In collaborative group work there may be 2-3 children

working together, however I am in charge of my device.

● I understand that if I break these rules, the school may need to inform my parent(s). In serious cases the school may take disciplinary action against me. I also understand that my family may be charged for repair costs. Depending on the seriousness of the breach, possible school responses could include one or more of the following actions: ○ A discussion with the student and/or informing parent(s). ○ Loss of digital device privileges. ○ The family possibly having responsibility for repair/replacement costs. ○ The school taking disciplinary action.

Concerns and Complaints – School Policy It is inevitable that occasionally misunderstandings occur between home and school. Complaints  about matters affecting school, students or teachers are often the result of a lack of information or a  misunderstanding, and in most cases can be resolved with consultation and communication. To  keep harmonious relations between home and school, please adhere to the following procedures:

1. The parent or caregiver should go to the teacher concerned and arrange a time convenient to both parties  when the matter can be discussed in private. It is not appropriate to:  ● Confront a teacher in front of a class or while others are around. ● Interrupt the work of the class. ● Complain about children in front of students or other adults. ● Cause a scene in front of others. ● Discuss any worries or complaints in the community.

2. If satisfaction is not gained from the initial interview, a time should be arranged to  discuss the matter with the Principal.

3. If satisfactory understanding still cannot be arrived at, the complaint may be taken to the Board of  Trustees. The complaint must be in writing and a copy given to the Principal.

● Children arriving after the music plays must report to the Office as the roll will have been taken and we need to sight every child to ensure their safety.
