Hampshire Horsewatch Bulletin (Incorporating Information From Around The Country) Date 1 March 2013 1 Information and Advice Please n ote. In previous bulletins it has been mentioned that not every police force or Horsewatch scheme submits equine crime information or reports for inclusion on this bulletin. This is not because there is no crime but that no one can be bothered to pass on information. I was trawling the Horsewatch and police web sites on the UK Horsewatch Alliance site the other day and discovered many equine crime related matters. It is worth spending time researching those sites to find out what is going on around the country. This bulletin is to provide a service and relies on contributions from equine groups, police or community around the country. _____________________________ _________________________________ Kindly brought to our attention by Sussex Horsewatch This message was circulated by Sussex Horsewatch and is repeated as received. For all of you who don’t wear the appropriate headgear let this be a warning! Earlier today I received a message from one of our members, she apologised for not having been in touch and informed me that she had been involved in a horrific riding accident last December. Tonight I managed to speak to her on the telephone. She is a very competent rider with many years riding experience. She told me that she was exercising her horse and was just warming it up when suddenly it put its head down and gave a buck. This sent our member flying over its head. It is believed that whilst going over the head the horse brought it up catching her and propelling her higher into the air. The next thing our member remembers is heading head first towards the ground hitting her head. The upshot is she has broken bones in her neck and back and as you can imagine upon hitting the ground the body halted rapidly but the internal organs did not and were thrown all over the place causing much internal bruising. Fortunately she is slowly recovering but is still suffering with memory loss, feels very weak and tiredness. She has asked that I inform you that she is totally convinced that if she had not been wearing a riding hat she would have died, and asks that I plead with you all never ever ride your horse/pony without a proper fitting up-to-date approved riding hat. Kindly brought to our attention by Sussex Horsewatch Hare Coursing Over the past few weeks, Police have seen an increase in hare coursing incidents across the country and have stepped up their response accordingly, using a range of different tactics to catch and convict offenders. Because of this increase, Police want to raise awareness of this crime to the whole community, while reminding everyone to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activities. To help Police catch the culprits, it is important that incidents are reported to Police immediately so that officers can get to the scene as soon as possible. You can help Police further by being aware of the following guidelines: Call 101 to report any suspicious activities or movement of vehicles. No-one knows the countryside better than residents of rural communities. You are in the best place to notice unfamiliar people, vehicles and suspicious activities. of travel of vehicles can be extremely valuable. • If people are actively hare coursing on your land, immediately dial 999 and ask for the police.

Ideally take note of vehicle makes, colours, registration numbers, times and specific locations. • Under no circumstances approach the offenders or confront them. Observe the activities from a

safe distance, even a neighbouring field, rather than engaging directly with suspected coursers. • Keep the Constabulary informed of further movement and direction, if the suspects have moved

on. __________________________________________ ___________________

Theft of lights from Land Rovers Please note the crime details as circulated from North Yorkshire and Sussex. It appears that Land Rovers are being targeted in at least two counties. Given the distance between the two counties it is difficult to say these crimes are connected. However, thieves do travel and, as with metal thefts, if thieves know that there is a market for certain goods then that niche of crime will be repeated nationally. As always if your vehicle has been tampered with especially a Land Rover, given the information received, report the occurrence to the police.

_________________________________________ ____________________ Tack theft - October 2011 Your attention is drawn to this historical theft report from Norfolk! The theft occurred in October 2011 and apparently has just been reported to the police. Some of the items are recognisable. Hampshire Horsewatch members are being provided with crime prevention information via Country Watch News letters for their areas. Theft of saddles Generally in the county reported crime is low. Two saddles were reported stolen from Liphook area overnight 25/26 February 2013.

____________________________________________________________ Am I bothered!! At a recent event in the New Forest 20 horse owners accepted an offer to have their saddles post coded when they returned two weeks later for a follow up meeting. Horsewatch members attended expecting at least 20 saddles to be presented for post coding. Sadly only two individuals brought their saddles along. Two is better than none however it is a sad indictment that apathy is still about. One of the Horsewatch members who attended to post code travelled 109 miles and spent 3 hours travelling to help others!!!!
