Information about learning in Reception

Our learning theme is… ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’

The children will continue their Forest School sessions this term whatever the weather! This term they will learn about different habitats and use natural resources to create a variety of objects and pictures.

This term our new learning theme is, ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ which will continue through to the end of the children’s journey in Reception. Throughout this theme we will have many exciting learning

opportunities to explore different aspects of the world around us. We will be focusing on different life cycles and comparing similarities and differences between animals, humans and plants.

The Home/School Partnership Curriculum Newsletter Summer Term 5 2017

Reception children took part in their first cross country, house competition. Ready, steady, run!

Communication and Language (Prime) Literacy (Specific)

We will start the term by talking about and sharing our experiences of our half term break.

The children will write a re-count of their half term.

We will be learning to write in a range of contexts such as lists of instructions for seed packets.

Our role play areas will also support the children in developing their independent writing. We are encouraging the children to write in a range of contexts as independently

as possible.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Prime)

We will extend our knowledge of the school ’Smart Charter’ and talk about appropriate behaviour. The children will focus on work in pairs and small groups, taking turns and sharing fairly, as well

as accepting the needs of others.

We will also focus on our new school value of determination. We will be exploring what it means to be determined and why it

is important to be determined in everything that we do.

Expressive Arts and Design (Specific)

The children will continue to use the creative area independently which will encourage them to have their own ideas and use a range of techniques they

have learnt to create them.

The role play areas are going to take on a range of appearances such as a garden centre, both indoors

and outdoors, and the children will decide on other appearances. These will enable the children

to develop their imagination skills whilst also supporting all of the other learning areas.

Mathematics (Specific)

We will continue to develop addition and subtraction skills reinforcing the language ‘more’, ‘less’ and ‘fewer’.

The children will progress onto separating a given number of objects into two groups. We will continue

learning how to double and half given numbers up to 10 and then to 20. The children will continue to learn how

to record our findings in number sentences.

Through our play the children will be learning about money and finding out about the value of different coins. They will use them to buy items from our garden centre.

Understanding the World (Specific)

We will be finding out and identifying features of the natural world and

living things. Our theme of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ will provide plenty of opportunities

for growing our own plants and looking at living things such as mini-beasts and lifecycles. We will have our own chicks in school which will help us to learn about the lifecycle of a chick.

During our Forest School sessions we will use bug finders to look closely at mini-beasts and

make comparisons between plants.

Physical Development

This term we will be learning new skills In preparation for Sports Day. At least one session a week will take place outdoors. The children will learn how to be a successful runner and use

the hurdles safely. We are also continuing to develop our throwing skills with a focus on foam javelins and shot put balls.

Children in Miss Symmons’ class: PE will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children in Mrs Smart’s class: PE will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please ensure that your child’s earrings are removed on their PE day.

We value Determination

End of Term 5 Expectations This guideline outlines the learning expectations for reception children by the end of this half term. It is

important to remember that all children develop at their own rate and all children have their own personal targets to work on in their learning log. Some children may be working towards and beyond these expectations.

Mathematics (Specific)

Children should: Be able to identify, order, count out and write all numbers to

20 correctly, forming them correctly. Be able to say which is one more or less than a number to 20. Add two single digit numbers to find the total using apparatus and/ or a number line. E.g. 4+2, 7+3 Take away a single digit from a number to 10 to find the an-

swer. E.g. 6-2, 5-3 Recognise a sphere, cylinder, cube and cuboid and discuss

how many edges, 2D faces and vertices (corners) there are. Begin to double and halve a given number to 10 and then to

20.

Communication and Language (Prime) Literacy (Specific)

Children should: Be able to identify all phase 3 sounds– see phase 3 superhero mat sent home and resources in your

phonics workshop pack. Begin to use phase 3 sounds in their writing and identify

them when reading. Read a simple sentence with some high frequency words in-

dependently. E.g. The boy went to the shop. Write CVCC (went, mint etc) words independently and some

tricky words such as; the, my, into, he, she, that etc. To read their words back when they have written them.

If you have any questions about supporting your child’s learning at home please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.
