New Martin’s Point Bridge As many of you who travel on Route one between Falmouth and Portland have noticed the bridge is being replaced by a new and more modern structure. The new bridge is virtually fin- ished, but because the original bridge was built in 1943 it had wooden pilings due to the steel being needed for the war effort. The contractors are still at work removing the pilings. It is quite a time consuming process, as the pilings must be pulled up from the muddy bottom of the river. There is a tremendous amount of suction when the pilings are be- ing pulled up. You can still see dozens of them on the western side of the bridge. I have no idea how long it will take to remove the rest of the pilings. If you are traveling south toward the City of Portland you will notice a full sized sculpture of an Osprey about to land on it’s nest. I was told that during the dismantling/destruction of the old bridge an artist from Mas- sachusetts gathered a bunch of the scrap metal and took it home with her to Massachusetts. She used the re-bar for the nest and other parts to fashion the Osprey. The Sculpture is really a great memorial to the old bridge. The news was a little slim this month and no one submitted a profile of a carver, so the newsletter is a little late this month due to my optimism that some one would content that I could have placed on the two missing pages.

But alas my email box came up empty. I volunteered for this job and I’m not belly aching (although I do have a sufficient belly for the task). The thing is that I’m supposed to be an editor, not a reporter or writer, and since I’m still pretty new at this I don’t know most of the asso-ciations members so aside from the few that I do know I don’t even know who I should bug for stories. Perhaps some of you could share some information with the association.

It could be a silly thing that happened at a chapter meeting or a review of some tools that you like or dislike. So think about how you could help to make this newslet-ter better, and send me some material that I can use next month. my email address is:[email protected] Snail Mail is:8 Woodward Lane, Falmouth, ME 04105

We are sending a donation of $50.00 to the food bank and rent for using the church is to be paid in January.Discussions referring to the Down East Shows concerning possible changes and the nominees for office in The Maine Wood Carvers.. Members were encour-aged to attend the next board meeting to be held at a later date.

Streaked mountain is asking if anyone is interested in doing a two day seminar carving an animal with Wayne Smith in June. If interested contact Bob Perry for further details.

There was a discussion about having a carving demonstration/seminar in the near future. The featured artist and time will be announced at next meeting.We also found that the local area is put-ting together a calendar, they were look-ing for adds for upcoming events. Steven and I took out three adds;

Xmas. Jack is working on a leaf wood spirit, Rick is finishing wood burning on his own veterans cane. Greg has finished two owls and a beautiful turtle in black walnut. I am completing work on a cane for a Marine. Several members have been out with injuries non wood related and we anxiously await their return.

Cane Presentation to Bill Keith Sr.

Submitted by: Jim Irish

On Dec 20th after attending the Poland Spring carving meeting and Christmas party, Bernie Hodgkins and I had the honor to be able to present an Eagle cane to Vietnam veteran, Wil-liam (Bill) Keith Sr. He received a Purple Heart and the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze stars among others.This was a surprise presentation arranged by his wife, Mary. They were having a family par-ty and used it as a time to honor Bill. It was our pleasure to be able to represent the Maine Wood Carvers and all the chapters that we attend.

Synopsis of Leo Flewelling’s Carving Career I am Leo’s younger brother Erwin and have based this on his re-sume. Leo was a potato farmer for more than 40 years, farming in the small community of Crouseville, ME near Washburn and Pr-esque Isle. Leo retired from business in 1982 and began wood carving as a hobby. His basic interest was in carving realistic birds native to our own State of Maine. He purchased a book “The Art of Bird Carving” by Wendell Gilley of South West Harbor, Maine. He then began to subscribe to wood carving and bird publications and proceeded to acquire the knowledge he felt necessary to develop the finest carv-ing techniques. After a lot of study, practice and production of many different birds he decided to enter the Maine Wildlife Wood Carvers annual competition at the Civic Center in Augusta. In 1985 he won first place in Song bird category. After that first time he won twen-ty-four awards, including several first place ribbons, Sportsman’s Choice Award and third Best of Show. He joined Maine Wildlife Wood Carvers Association in 1984 and re-mained a member of MWWCA and then Maine Wood Carver Asso-ciation, as it is know today. He was a member of The National Wood Carvers Association and in 1987 was recognized in their publication “Chip Chats” for a Ruffed Grouse which took first place and People’s Choice Award in a competition in Halifax of the Nova Scotia Wood Carvers Association. He majored in Song Birds, Birds of Prey, Upland Game Birds and Waterfowl. He did a video of carving techniques and did many pri-vate showings of his work. His work is in twenty-seven states and Europe. He did work for people from all walks of life and did quite a few presentation pieces for various businesses and organizations.

His main goal was to portray accuracy of color and anatomy in the species and to please the customer. He will be missed by his sib-lings and children and many who have known him.
