    1. INTRODUCTION

The Industrial Experience and Professional Communicationforms an integral

part of the B.Eng (Honours) in Civil Engineering course. The Industrial

Experience and Professional Communication contains an Industrial

Placement element consisting of a period of not less than 12 weeks duration

at a suitable workplace. Students are required to successfully complete the

period of industrial placement as partial fulfilment of this subject and hence

the course. These guidelines provide the necessary background information

and the requirements of the 12 week placement.

Students failing to achieve an industrial placement position will berequired to complete an industrial project (please see industrial project

    guidelines).

The aim of the industrial placement is to expose students to the practical

applications of civil engineering which will enhance the overall learning

Students will be required to submit an interim report, a final report and two

essays regarding their industrial placement. The final report will be placement

specific but would typically include topic areas such as:

o Overview of thedesign brief or Scheme Function/Design Brief

    o Stage of Scheme/Design Project

o Site Investigation, Site Selection and Scheme Layout and General

    Site Conditions

o Site Organisation/Site Safety or Consultancy Practice

o Specific Construction/Engineering Technology (Design or Site

    Technology)

o Surveying and Setting Out or Scheme Layout

    o Scheme Management

    o Efficiency of scheme operation

    o Contract Administration

It is expected that the 12 week industrial placement period would typically

    include some of the following:

    o Assisting the design/site engineer/agent or manager

    3. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

The industrial placement will commence in June. Students on placement will

be interviewed in early June to assess progress on the placement. The

supervising lecture reserves the right to contact the employer during the

course of the placement as part assessment of student progress on

placement. The students will also be required to produce an interim

experience report, a final experience report and two essays. Finally the

student will be interviewed and required to make a formal presentation

regarding their experience over the placement period. The flow chart below

summarises the key stages of the industrial placement.

Commence Placement an endof summer exams.

    Commence Industrial Placement

Industrial placement is to be commenced on Mid Junefollowing

    examinations.

    First Interview

The first interview will take place in June / July. The employer may be

contacted prior to the interview. Resultantly, in the interest of clarity it is

important for the student to effectively communication the requirements of

the placement to the employer. The student will be expected to produce

completed daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets at the first

interview. The student will also be required to demonstrate the quality of

    his/her experience.

    feedback if given to supervisors.

The daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets shall be typed

and copies appended to the 500 word report.

    2. A 5,000 word experience report

o Highlighting levels of responsibility, description of duties, problems

experienced and how you overcame these problems. It is

expected that the student will describe in detail their experience

under the headings described in section 1.

The daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets shall be typed

and appended to the 5,000 word report.

    3. Two 1,000 word essays.

The essays shall be prepared and submitted from the following a list

provided by the lecturer on the first site visit:
