AIRPORTLINKPenticton, Canada is a growing city in the Okanagan Valley, surrounded by vineyards, lakes and desert mountains.

This project involves the proposition to add a train system rooted from the airport that will deposit passengers to and from the airport as well as provide a means of transport to different attractions in the area for example wine tasting tours.

The current airport was built in the 1960s and has never been updated, but with the growth of the flights available and the rising popularity of the city an upgrade was needed. This upgrade would also become the main train station, allowing visitors who come by flight to travel to their destination without needing to rent a car.

TACTILEPACKAGING

Page 9: Industrial Design Portfolio

I took inspiration from tropical beach and ocean themes in order to design the packaging of a Hawaiian Punch bottle that would trigger potential purchasers to pick up the bottle to feel it.

The feel of the grips on the bottle provoke a sense of playfulness, reminding the user of holding a toy, which would also reflect the playfulness of Hawaiian Punch’s colourful drinks.

FUNTHEORYGroup project aim: Improve poor office behaviour by making them more enjoyable to correct

Right: 3 office personas to determine bad office behaviours (based on interviews with office workers)

Page 11: Industrial Design Portfolio

Rather than targeting a specific problem in an office we decided to create a playlist of uplifting songs and

played a different song after every hour in order to motivate workers and remind them to take a break.

Exploring the way light passes through layers of translucent sheet with varying separations, creating an aesthetic similar to a bone’s in-ternal matrix.

‘You will be given a sheet of semi-translucent polypropylene (PP). Using this material and a simple, switched light fitting you should create a lamp through clever manipulation of the material – cutting, folding and fastening.’

NON-LITERALFORMSTHEME: ‘SIMPLISTIC’

“You are to design a ‘non-literal product’, i.e. a product that has no prescribed function, but which consciously manipulates how an electronic, personal, domestic, or business product can be perceived.”

GROW‘Design a piece of furniture that will remain useful as a child grows and if possible remain useful into adulthood.’

Page 27: Industrial Design Portfolio

The idea is essentially a storage system consisting of two parts that can serve several functions in various scenarios throughout its users’ life.

Page 28: Industrial Design Portfolio

Ways in which the product could be used in a children’s room; toy storage, a learning aid, a means of creativity (can be drawn on with dry-erase pens), a room divide, or used as a seat.

Further uses for the product that would be aimed more towards a teenager or adult; put up on the wall in a dorm room, hung on the wall to be written on and used as a cork board, or used as storage in an adults’ room or house.

BIOMIMETICS:CICADASDuring the molting stage of the lifecycle the cicada needs to be able to have a secure grip on the surface they find to molt and leave their exoskeleton on. This means that their feet have strong gripping capabilities and this adaptation could have uses in design.

Opportunity in Design

Lights could be used in developing countries, they could be stuck to buildings/trees during the day then taken in when its dark.

EVERYDAYRITUALS‘Design an object that celebrates the practice of preparing, serving, and drinking tea or coffee.’

Page 33: Industrial Design Portfolio

The design involves a usb powered heat pad that keeps a hot beverage warm. The product is well suited to office workers or travellers and can be charged via a

laptop on a train or plane.

YOUTHINC.

Group live project working with Mind UK focusing on mental health in students in school aged 16-24.

The solution is a service that comes to school to introduce an application for smartphones and web that aims to help tackle insights found to be concerning students.

Page 37: Industrial Design Portfolio

Insights Opportunities

Students worried about not handing work in on time/too many projects at the same time (worried about forgetting one).

Don’t have time to meet with teachers or may be anxious about asking teachers questions,

Difficulty time managing so students become overworked and wont take breaks or else start taking a break and get distracted. This can lead to a poor sleep cycle and more stress.

Students unaware about mental health and might not know that there’s help available.

Way to stay better organised and prioritise different projects, and attempt to made the concept of a planner more positive.

Means of communication with teachers outside of class to discuss times to meet/work queries. Additionally students could be provided with profiles of their teachers with the teachers interests to make them ‘more human’ so students will be less anxious to communicate with them.

System to help control breaking and working times to try to maximise work done while keeping the student physically and mentally well.

Provide more information on mental health and easier access to resources.
