Finding Holes in Handles

How can a handle maximizenegative space while adding value to the design?

Page 5: Industrial Design Portfolio
Page 6: Industrial Design Portfolio

The first model showed that people could not grip the handle comfortably.

I broke off the bottom part to get rid of thenegative space. How else could negative space be added?

People were not sure if they should put their hand all the way around the handle or inside the gap.

Did the gap add any value to the handle?

The wooden inlay implies negative space.

Laser Cut Vessel

A vessel cut from a single piece of 12”-12” Baltic Birch plywood.

Every other piece is rotated 90 degrees to add depth to the vessel.

Every other piece has alternating widths of .25” and .5” to create more negative space and increased visual journeys.

Face Value

Does a watch need a full face toexpress time?

How can a watch portray both asingle moment and a period of time?

What use could the unneeded face have?

Page 13: Industrial Design Portfolio

To have only half of the face show, all twelve hours must fit in the open half.

Each hand only has half of its body showing, with the other halfcovered.

When switching from 11:59-12:00, the back half of the hands reach the top, signifyingmidnight or noon.

The Space Saving Stool

People who live in small spaces need furniture that will work in the space they have. They must becreative when choosing furniture, since space fills quickly.

How can these small apartment residents have the things they need and still have room to live?

Page 17: Industrial Design Portfolio

Ikea represents simplistic and concise design perfect for those lacking square footage.
