Alongside the business session of the Yi annual day, a special public session on the theme "Fearless in Thoughts, Forward in Action" was
organised.
Fearless in Thoughts, Forward in Action: The fear of not getting enough, of lacking, of scarcity is deeply ingrained in our societies. Coming from our parents and ancestors, who experienced
physical lack of several kinds (food, houses, clothing, etc.) in several wars; this is a very understandable fear. We should adopt some common
practises to minimize the fear. We can move forward in our action only if we are fearless in our thoughts.
We Can We Will !!
Mr Mahesh Sharma, CEO, Flexituff International was the guest speaker for the session. Mr
Sharma is a Mechanical Engineer from Shri Vaishnav Polytechnic Institute, Indore & MBA from
Institute of Management Studies Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore. He is having more than
twenty years of experience in the corporate sector at various levels.
“Harmonious approach in work and life should be implicated. Fear cannot be removed as it is a
part of our life, however, it can be reduced by identifying the causes for the fear. Once we
identify the causes for our fear then we should segregate the controllable and uncontrollable
factors. By holding the control on the controllable factor for the fear we can reduce the fear.
Believe in yourself”, said Mr Sharma during his address.
Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Indore was the keynote speaker for the session. He holds M.Sc. in
Physics (5-year Integrated Programme) from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur; and M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems (now

where he won the outstanding thesis proposal award instituted by the Industrial Finance
Corporation of India. He has also authored a lot of books and has more than 140 publications to
his credit. He has served on a lot of committees set up by the Govt of India. His main areas of
interest are strategy and innovation.
During his address to the audience, he said that, “we should adopt the environmental friendly
attitude, use of renewable source of energy and we need to go hand in hand with the highly
secured world. One major advantage with the use of renewable energy is that as it is renewable
it is therefore sustainable and so will never run out. Even more importantly, renewable energy

produces little or no waste products such as carbon dioxide or other chemical pollutants, so
has minimal impact on the environment. Renewable energy projects can also bring economic
benefits to many regional areas, as most projects are located away from large urban centres
and suburbs of the capital cities. These economic benefits may be from the increased use of
local services as well as tourism”.
“If we build a cohesive attitude change is possible and if we work in a large team we can bring
the change”, he added.

Yi Indore Earth Hour 2014
Saturday, 29 March 2014: Yeshwant Club, Indore
Yi Indore chapter celebrated Earth Hour 2014 on Saturday, 29 March 2014 at Yeshwant Club
Indore. The objective was to create awareness among the citizens about the environment
conservation.
Earth Hour is the world’s biggest celebration for our amazing planet – every year on the last
Saturday of March, millions of people across the globe unite in a spectacular show of support to
raise awareness about climate change.
From signature campaigns to musical evenings, cyclothons to candlelit marches, walkathons,
dance performances, magic shows, flash mobs and recycling drives - Earth Hour is our planet’s time to shine! It’s a time to host your own Earth Hour
campaign – of one, or one hundred people – to pledge to do your own bit for the planet.
Whether it’s a status update, or an acoustic band performance, everyone can be an Earth Hour
Hero.
When the planet goes dark, governments, organizations and people take notice and this has
led to extraordinary outcomes for the environment in countries like Russia, Argentina,
Madagascar and our own. From this darkness will emerge greater enlightenment about climate
change and the need to make more planet-friendly choices. And every hand that flips a switch
off, turns on a brighter future!

Yi Indore Seed Ball Initiative Sunday, 27 April 2014 : Indore
Yi Indore organized “seed ball making” activity on Sunday, 27 April 2014 at Eden Garden,
Indore. Yi members along with family and friends, actively participated in the activity and
prepared more than 3000 seed balls.
Seed balls, also known as "earth balls", consist of a variety of different seeds rolled within a
ball of clay. A seed ball is a seed that has been wrapped in soil materials, usually a mixture of
clay and compost, and then dried. Essentially, the seed is 'pre-planted' and can be sown by
depositing the seed ball anywhere suitable for the species, keeping the seed safely until the
proper germination window arises. Seed balls are an easy and sustainable way to cultivate
We Can We Will !!
plants in a way that provides a larger window of time when the sowing can occur. They also
are a convenient dispersal mechanism for guerrilla gardeners and people with achy backs.
The dried clay acts as a protective casing from common seed predators (such as ants, mice
and birds). When sufficient rain permeates the clay, the seeds inside begin to germinate -
helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the balls.
Seed balls may have been used by the Ancient Egyptians to seed the receding banks of The
Nile after annual floods. They have been used in Asia and elsewhere, especially in arid
regions, because of their ability to keep the seeds safe until conditions are favourable for germination, and the ease at which they can be distributed.
The technique for creating seed balls was rediscovered by a Japanese farmer. Today, seed
balls are fun for green-minded kids and adults, and are also an important tool of the plantation
activity.
Seed balls will work well in most environments (as long as the type of seed used is suited to
that environment) and they are particularly useful in dry and arid areas where rainfall is highly
unpredictable and in severely degraded land.
Seed balls have use in nearly any region where plants can grow: for reseeding ecosystems
into areas of man-made deserts, avoiding seed eating insects and animals and protecting
seeds until rains fall to soak the clay ball and stimulate the seeds. Seeds contained in such balls then germinate in ideal conditions for each
climate/region.
We Can We Will !!
Yi has been conducting seed ball making and distributing efforts for past several years. More than 5.5 lakh seed balls have been made and dispersed
in and near Indore by Yi Indore chapter in past years. Around 40 people including Yi members, members’ spouse, non members and kids participated
in the activity.
