We were joined by a group of Indigenous People from Australia as

well as other students from VIU. On Tuesday, May 16th, three grade

8 KSS students and myself paddled with the group near Newcastle

Island and learned cultural teachings about the canoe. After that

we had a sharing circle about the experience, listened to oral stories

about the area, danced and sang with Snuneymuxw Elders. On

Wednesday, May 17th, we took the bus to Duncan where we spent

the day in the Somena Bighouse. There we listened to the story of

the Wild Woman, watched a dance group perform and took turns

working with a cedar log that will eventually become a totem pole.

We learned many cultural teachings about the cedar tree and the

balance of two, such as male/female.
