10:00 Depart for Jerusalem

11:30 - 12:30 Linguistic Sustainability: Linguicide, Language Revival and Social Wellbeing Prof. Ghil’ad Zuckermann, The University of Adelaide www.zuckermann.org

This lecture will explain why language revival and diversity are (1) right, (2) beautiful, and (3) beneficial. In our globalized world, more and more groups are losing their heritage. Language reclamation (e.g. Barngarla Aboriginal language of South Australia), revitalization (e.g. Shanghainese) and reinvigoration (e.g. Welsh) are becoming increasingly relevant as more and more people seek to reconnect with their ancestors, recover their cultural autonomy, empower their spiritual and intellectual sovereignty, and improve their wellbeing and mental health. There is an urgent need to offer comparative insights, e.g. Hebrew revival, the most successful known linguistic reclamation. Given capricious governmental policies, this lecture will propose compensation (for linguistic activities) for peoples whose mother tongue was killed (due to linguicide), making Indigenous tongues the official languages of their region, and erecting multi-lingual official signs, changing the lanGscape (linguistic landscape). Professor Ghil‘ad Zuckermann (DPhil Oxford; PhD Cambridge, titular; MA Tel Aviv, summa cum laude) is Chair of Linguistics and Endangered Languages at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is the author of the bestseller Israelit Safa Yafa (Israeli – A Beautiful Language; Am Oved, 2008), Language Contact and Lexical Enrichment in Israeli Hebrew (Palgrave Macmillan, 2003), Engaging – A Guide to Interacting Respectfully and Reciprocally with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, and their Arts Practices and Intellectual Property (2015) and the first online Dictionary of the Barngarla Aboriginal Language (2016). He is the editor of Burning Issues in Afro-Asiatic Linguistics (2012), Jewish Language Contact (2014), a special issue of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language, and co-editor of Endangered Words, Signs of Revival (2014). He is founder of Revivalistics, a new trans-disciplinary enquiry surrounding language reclamation, revitalization and reinvigoration. He has launched, with the Barngarla Aboriginal communities of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, the reclamation of the Barngarla language. Professor Zuckermann is elected member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the Foundation for Endangered Languages (FEL). @ Givat Ram Campus, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

THURSDAY 24TH MAY (CONT)14:00 - 15:00 Prof (emeritus) Elite Olshtain Whole Community Educational Approach Hebrew University of Jerusalem Professor (emeritus) of language education in the School of Education at the Hebrew University; was formerly the Louis and Ann Wolens Professor of Educational Research at the University. She taught at Tel Aviv University for decades and was the Dean of the School of Education from 1990 to 1992. Her main research interests are second language acquisition, bilingualism, language attrition, and reading instruction. Based on a “whole community” educational approach, Hebrew University developed a method of teaching that accelerates the learning of language skills. These techniques were used with large immigrant populations, including Ethiopians with no previous knowledge of English or Hebrew, and proved extremely successful in the absorption of new populations into Israel. The method pairs a child and teacher for focused 10 minute one-on-one sessions that include an emphasis on enhancing the student’s self-confidence and self-esteem. These techniques are now recognized worldwide as a valuable method of educating students in underserved or at-risk communities. Teams of Israeli teachers have established teaching programs in China, Vietnam, Italy and Mexico, tailoring each program to the location’s specific needs. SATURDAY 26TH MAY08:30 Depart Hotel for Mt. Scopus

09:00 - 10:00 Mt. Scopus Commonwealth War Graves–ANZAC Visit Panoramic View of Jerusalem (includes wreath laying)The ANZACs fought here in both World Wars. The most famous battle was charge by the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba (Beer Sheva) which marked a turning point in the Sinai-Palestine campaign. On 31 October 1917, Lieutenant-General Chauvel, the Commander of the Desert Mounted Corps, ordered the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade to attack the Turkish positions. Two regiments, numbering up to 800 Light Horsemen, formed up by squadrons in three lines, 300 to 500 metres apart and moved forward. The assault soon became a reckless headlong gallop into the setting sun down the long gentle slope to Beersheba. Their ranks held close as the horses galloped some five metres apart. For almost three kilometres they charged over exposed ground against small arms and artillery fire before reaching the Turkish trenches. Some Australians leapt from their horses and engaged Turkish soldiers in hand-to hand fighting, while most rode into Beersheba to secure the town and the wells. Although 31 Australians and at least 70 horses were killed in the charge, over 1,000 Turkish soldiers were captured along with large quantities of supplies and ammunition. News of the charge captured the imagination of the world. Popularly recalled as ‘one of the last cavalry charges in history’, the capture of Beersheba turned the flank of the Turkish defensive line and opened the way for the start of the Palestine campaign which resulted in allied victory in the Middle East in 1918.

The Dead Sea located at the lowest point on earth is a one-of-a-kind body of water and is the saltiest and most mineral-laden in the world. The Bedouin have recently acquired a modern way of life, reflected in cultural, social and economic changes as well as changes in housing, dress etc. As a result, many of the former Bedouin ways of life are disappearing, and with them the objects and traditions of Bedouin society, prompting a need to collect, preserve and record them before they completely disappear.

“Notwithstanding personal views on the messy and polarising politics of the Middle East, the State of Israel is an important study in democratic nation-building in a unforgiving natural environment. Israel is creating a viable economy utilising its only significant primary endowment – the resourcefulness of its people. Israel’s achievements in a wide range of endeavours, including agriculture, science and technology and social development, need to be seen first-hand to be understood – and lessons drawn. I am grateful to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce for arranging for me to explore my intellectual and professional interests in Israel. The Chamber proved an excellent vehicle for introducing groups of Australians with like-minded interests to developments in Israel.”DAVID IRVINE AO FORMER DIRECTOR GENERAL ASIO - AUSTRALIAN SECURITY INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION

THE AUSTRALIAN OPPORTUNITYWith a burgeoning economy, and the highest number of start-up companies in the world, Israel has caught the attention of Australian companies seeking to develop a competitive advantage through future product and service development. Israeli scientific advancement has revolutionised global product development through innovation and invention. AICC Israel Delegations enable participants to gain an insight into how Israel has developed a $300 billion economy amidst an existential quest for survival and the domestic challenges of social integration. In many ways Israel is a ‘pressure cooker’. Business and political leaders in Australia can benefit from seeing how Israel manages the problems we in Australia have or likely to have in the future. They can see how economic development, stimulated by a Venture Capital market that incubates and propels business on a global scale, has allowed new technology to flourish and has resulted in the iconic technology companies of the world establishing research and development operations in Israel.

Israel is a small and intense country whose major resource is its people and their ability to think through and innovate solutions to problems. The AICC delegations have enabled participants to learn and benefit from observing both Israel’s successes and its failures. The AICC Trade Delegation aspires to stimulate and ferment new thinking, new ideas, and new business relationships between Australia and Israel. Bilateral trade contracts resulting from these delegations have led to the development of enhanced competitiveness, product diversification, and the identification of new strategic niche opportunities for many Australian businesses.

Did you know this about Israel?

“The team at AICC are first class. Having been on a number of delegations with different organisations over the journey, my experience is that this teams ability to organise really high quality meetings and experiences which provide genuine insight and learning and their skill in chasing down tailored opportunities really sets them apart.”

JIM MILLER CHAIRMAN - INFRASTRUCTURE VICTORIA; VICE CHAIRMAN - INFRASTRUCTURE PARTNERSHIPS AUSTRALIA

I want to thank you for a truly extraordinary experience. The May 2016 Israel Delegation was a unique and exceptional opportunity to meet with a diverse and inspiring group of people. The individual tailored meetings were spot on and the forums and cultural tours were excellent. The attention to detail created a very safe and comfortable environment and I particularly enjoyed Tel Aviv which strikes me as the New York of Israel, the 24/7 city!! And I’m still reflecting on the amazing opportunity to walk around Jerusalem and the amazing history - what a privilege.Overall I just loved the whole swagger of the place - and John, you do a really great job of organising everything, well done. The Israel crew were masterful and extremely well organised as well. Thanks for getting me on board!

“The AICC hosted trade delegation on cyber security was quite a simply spectacular example of influence, access and organisation. By virtue of the cyber security industry in Israel, this delegation effectively doubled-up as an expose of Israel’s start-up revolution, its venture capital engine room, and an insightful display of Israel’s innovation and high-functioning collaboration. I was particularly impressed by the AICC’s ability to translate my specific business requirements around cyber security, into meaningful engagements across academia, government and private enterprise. More specifically, the visit allowed me to survey a large number of particularly capable vendors in an incredible compressed timeframe, making for efficient use of this relatively short visit. Some of these vendors I knew, and others that I would have missed were identified by the Chamber through their network of informed contacts. Overall a thoroughly worthwhile delegation to be part of.”

“ Whether you are an academic, ITO, investor or like us just wanting to meet people at the heart of the Israeli start up and tech phenomena we can attest the AICC reach, connections and determination that your mission will exceed your expectations. We were given privileged and unequal access to leading researchers, government, venture capitalists, serial entrepreneurs and a full day with private, on one on one meetings spanning nanotechnology, AI, Batteries, UMV drones and agriculture. It was an immersion into Israel’s start-up ecosystem with time to experience the richness of history, geopolitics and the uniqueness of its people. Just Go. “The delegation led by David Irvine combined leading academics, governmental representatives, industry participants with investors. Not only did we get a unique insight into the cybersecurity challenges facing all countries and companies, but we saw Israel’s focused determination to remain the leader in the field across academia, government and industry. As investors, we were introduced to opportunities varying from direct investment to Israel’s best venture capitalists. The AICC managed to mix this fascinating agenda with a stunning glimpse into historical and cultural sites and events with a geopolitical overlay- all in all a compelling experience”

JIM CRAIG ExECUTIVE CHAIRMAN - RIVER CAPITAL

“The AICC delegation to Israel was invaluable in providing a broad overview of the business ecosystem and what makes Israel such an innovative and entrepreneurial country to do business with. Their connection to key government, university, and commercial leaders demonstrates their ability to be a catalyst for Australian businesses looking to learn from Israeli success or leverage their innovations and learnings into our market. With it came a great measure of culture and insight into the history and culture of this great land.”MR MICHAEL TROVATO MANAGING PARTNER - CYBER RISK ADVISORS
