Director’s MessageBrandon University’s Mini University hasaccomplished a lot in our 34 years ofhands-on summer camp programming forchildren and youth grades Pre-K to 8. Wehave grown from only 200 participants per

year to over 1,200, and from four weeks ofcamp to nine weeks. An amazing 20,000+ campers have attendedMini U since its inception.

As a cost recovery, not-for-profit program, Mini U would not bewhere it is today without the generous financial support from ourprovincial, federal and private funders, as well as local businessesand advertisers. Said funding has helped sponsor more than 2000Aboriginal, Métis and low-income youth from all over Manitoba toattend camp.

Our success has also depended on the creativity, enthusiasm, andpassion of the more than 700 post-secondary instructors and staffwho found meaningful summer employment and training with MiniU. In addition, the support of Brandon University’s faculty and staffin providing space, equipment and expertise has helped us to providequality programming.

Of all Mini U’s accomplishments, I am most proud of both the sheernumber of choices we offer in our unique multi-disciplinary program, aswell as our hands-on, interactive content.

It has been a pleasure to have shaped the direction of this valuableprogram, and to continue to shape Mini U’s future. I believe thatthis is a truly worthwhile experience for children and youth, and Iwelcome all of our new and returning participants.

Dr. Nancy StanleyDirectorMini University

Our InstructorsOur instructors are chosen for their knowledge, maturity, leadership and ability to relate to children. The vast majority ofour staff are university students or recent graduates, and manyare studying to become teachers in the Faculty of Education.

To ensure that we employ only the highest quality staffand instructors, we provide 2-3 weeks of paid training thatincludes topics ranging from lesson planning and classroommanagement to cultural sensitivity and epi-pen use. As well, all staff are certified in CPR and First Aid and have clearCriminal Record and Child Abuse Registry checks.

Behaviour Management PolicyAbove all, Mini U’s goal is for its participants to have fun ina safe learning environment. To ensure that everyone hasfun, we do three main things:

1) Explain Our Rules: Classroom rules and our expectationsare clearly defined at the start of camp. Participants aremade aware that behaviours which cause emotional orphysical harm, disrupt the camp, or damage facilities orequipment are not tolerated.

Also, participants are informed that Mini U does not toleratesuch behaviours as bullying, racism, sexism, and homophobia.

2) Train Our Instructors: As part of staff orientation, wetrain our staff in classroom management and behaviouralmanagement techniques.

3) Enforce Three Strike Policy: If an issue is unable to beresolved by the classroom instructor then the participantis brought to the Program Coordinator for a discussion. The Program Coordinator assesses the situation and mayissue a Strike One. The participant is informed why theyhave been given a strike and what they can do to preventfurther strikes.

If the participant continues to act in a way that is againstour rules and policies, then Strike Two is given and parents, guardians, and/or chaperones are contacted.

In the rare situation when Strike Three is needed, theparticipant is immediately removed from camp andreleased to their parents, guardians, or chaperones. Pleasenote that refunds are NOT given in this event.

Based on the seriousness, and at the discretion of Mini U’sDirector and Program Coordinator, some behaviours (suchas fighting or stealing) may immediately warrant a secondor even third strike without previous strikes being issued.
