Q & A SESSION 8 Derom Bangun (GAPKI): You mention the need for better communication. Would you elaborate briefly what would you plan to do to communicate the achievements of RSPO to outsiders, especially to those who think that RSPO has achieved nothing? (To Rachel Kyte and Catherine Cassagne) Answer: RSPO should use the full spectrum of communication channels and step up its communications effort. Robert Cheong (TUV Rhineland Malaysia): 1) Timelines and targets for the capacity programme for smallholders? (To General) Answer: This will be guided by the RSPO work with smallholders. 2) How would IFC address climate change in assessing against the RSPO P&C? (To General) Answer: The RSPO P&C contain several elements that relate directly / indirectly to climate change. 3) What is the commitment of IFC to bringing in smallholders to the same level play as the big players? (To IFC) Answer: IFC will support programmes that seek to achieve this. Simon Lord (NBPOL): When will the BACP be implemented in PNG? (To Catherine Cassagne) Answer: Could be a day or one year – depends on the government. You must request assistance from the PNG producers with projects and ideas, then leverage on the PNG government. Norjihad Murasid (Asiatic Development Bhd.): The monthly income from the 20:80 model is Rp296,913, and the 30:70 model Rp692,104 for an average oil palm holding. I presume that these figures are solely from farming without any additional income derived elsewhere. I would therefore like to suggest that for studying the economic benefits, you include:

207

RT6 PROCEEDINGS

Page 23: INDEX 31.01.09 D

a) Individual / family income prior to the oil palm development b) Income received by the individual / family from non-farming activities, including

from employment or contract work offered by the plantation

c) Economic benefits received by the community through the CSR programme. However, if you have already covered these areas, can you share the information with us? (To John McCarthy) Answer: No, it is still a preliminary study at the moment. Alpan Tanjung (PT. ANJ Agri): 1) Have you compared the 20:80 model with other crops like rubber and cocoa? 2) Does your comparison of the 20:80 model only cover three provinces, or all the provinces in Indonesia? 3) Have you communicated your findings to related government departments and public? (To John McCarthy) Answer: No.
