Get a front row seat to an exciting and challenging discussion over some of America’s most prominent topics. Former U.S. Representative & NBC News Analyst Harold Ford, Jr. and Former Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq Dan Senor capture audiences during their interactive deliberation over some of today’s most hot-button issues including stability in the Middle East, domestic security, military transformation and the economy.

In conversation, Ford and Senor discuss re-establishing our moral authority through diplomacy; strengthening America’s international reputation; resurrecting our economic health and integrity; modernizing our military assets and strategy; managing sustainable levels of government spending and foreign policy.

Harold Ford, Jr. served Tennessee in the United States Congress for 10 years. Described by President Bill Clinton as “the walking, living embodiment of where America ought to go in the 21st century,” Ford is now a news analyst for NBC and MSNBC and a Professor of Public Policy at the NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the New York Times best selling author of More Davids than Goliaths.

Dan Senor was the Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq, and a Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III, the Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Senor rode into Baghdad on the first convoy of civilians into Iraq from Kuwait, less than two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, and was one of the longest-serving American civilians in Iraq. He is a best-selling co-author of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle and is often published in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Weekly Standard and TIME.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are the men behind one of the most talked-about and least conventional success stories in American business. Founders of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc., they built a store-front venture into a $300 million ice cream empire by harnessing the power of social responsibility and creative management.Born just four days apart, Ben and Jerry met during junior high and remained close through their years at Calhoun

High in Merrick, NY. After college and various odd jobs, the two reunited in 1977 to fulfill a dream they both shared: running a food business. Settling on an ice cream proved to be the winning formula. One year and a $5 Penn State correspondence course in ice cream making later, they opened their first Ben & Jerry’s Homemade ice cream parlor in Burlington, VT.

The duo soon became known throughout Vermont for rich, unusual flavors and a community-oriented approach to business, whereby good will, good times and good ice cream were shared through a variety of events, such as an autumn “Fall Down” Festival, a free outdoor movie festival and celebrating their anniversary with Free Cone Days. As the company grew, Ben’s jobs included scooper and taste-tester, truck driver, marketing director, salesperson and president. Jerry began by making all the ice cream, but as the company expanded into new markets, he soon found himself handling everything from

distribution to orientation to employee motivation.

A model for modern American corporate responsibility and business success, Ben and Jerry have been recognized for fostering commitment to social responsibility by the Council on Economic Priorities and by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which named them U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year in 1988. Ben and Jerry realize that by definition, the manufacturing of products creates waste. As they expand into Europe and Asia, Ben and Jerry remain conscious of their impact on the environment and believe it’s possible to be profitable and environmentally responsible. Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES).

Bringing all of this to life at the lecture podium, Ben and Jerry’s presentation is a rousing tribute to America’s entrepreneurial spirit, full of hilarious anecdotes and radical business philosophy—and comes complete with servings of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for the entire audience.

Together the husband-and-wife team speak about global affairs in the unique dual view of media reporter and government policy-maker. Brown and Senor combine to share more than two decades of experience in politics, government and the press, leading to a spirited discussion.

Dan Senor and Campbell Brown met in Baghdad shortly after

the start of the Iraqi War—with Senor serving as the Bush

Administration’s Chief Spokesman in Baghdad, and Brown in her

role as correspondent for NBC’s Today: Weekend Edition and NBC

Nightly News with Brian Williams.

Campbell Brown is one of the most respected and recognizable faces in

American news. She won an Emmy for her reporting during Hurricane Katrina; was on the trail during two presidential elections; and has made numerous trips to Iraq to report on the Iraqi elections, abuses at Abu Graib prison and the trial of Saddam Hussein. From 2008-2010 she was the host of CNN’s Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull. Prior to joining CNN, Brown was with NBC News for 11 years. While there, Brown served as co-anchor of NBC’s Today: Weekend Edition, and as the main substitute anchor for Brian Williams for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.

Dan Senor was the Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq, and a Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III, the Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Senor rode into Baghdad on the first convoy of civilians into Iraq from Kuwait, less than two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Working closely with the military under often less-than-ideal conditions, Senor advised the Bush Administration, the Blair Government in the U.K. and Ambassador Bremer on a variety of Iraqi strategic, policy and communication issues and was the civilian face of the Coalition Authority to Americans, Europeans, Iraqis and the world.

The Moneyball Philosophy

“Is this a risky move? ... It is. But in order to achieve something special, you have to step out and do something bold.”– Paul DePodesta

“Almost like a car salesman, if a guy walks onto the lot and a salesman qualifies him on how he is dressed he may miss out on a hell of a sale, we try to open our mind and say it’s not about perception or what you think

you see” — Billy Beane

How did one of the lowest paid teams in baseball win three American League West Division titles?

Go behind the scenes of Michael Lewis’ best-selling book Moneyball (now a major motion picture) and discover

how Beane and DePodesta shattered traditional MLB beliefs that big payrolls equated wins by implementing

statistical methodology that inevitably led the Oakland A’s, one of the worst teams in baseball, to four

consecutive playoff appearances and three American League West Division Titles.

The conventional wisdom in Major League Baseball is that wealthy teams — who spend three times as much on

talent as poor teams — will win out. However, during Beane and DePodesta’s four seasons together in Oakland,

the A’s won more regular season games than the New York Yankees, who during the same period spent $350

million more on player payroll than did the Athletics.

By striking parallels between baseball and business, they inspire audiences across industries with their

unforgettable winning underdog story and impart a philosophy corporations all over the world are adapting to

beat their competition in these trying economic times.

Considered one of the most progressive and talented baseball executives in the game today, Billy Beane has

molded the Oakland Athletics into a perennial postseason contender since assuming the general manager’s

duties shortly following the 1997 season. At the podium, Beane conveys his innovative, winning style of

management and leadership, which involves identifying undervalued assets to create and sustain a competitive

advantage.

Paul DePodesta has made a career of evaluating, measuring and assigning value to talent, and is currently Vice

President of Player Development and Scouting for the New York Mets. In 1999, DePodesta’s first season as

Oakland’s Assistant G.M., the Athletics enjoyed their first winning season in seven years and began a run of

four consecutive playoff appearances, including three American League West Division Titles.

“I saw you before I went on stage and you signed ‘I love you,’” —12-year-old Matlin to Winkler

The Power of Perseverance

Page 11: InConversation2013

When 12-year-old Marlee Matlin met Henry Winkler, one of the most recognized actors in the world, they instantly struck a special bond.

Matlin was attending the Center on Deafness, a community theater where she began acting at seven years old. Winkler and his wife visited the Center after he received fan mail from the students. There they saw Matlin perform on stage and were blown away by her talent. Backstage, Winkler enthusiastically told Matlin to follow her dream of becoming a professional actress.

Although her parents never discouraged Matlin from acting, they were convinced Hollywood would never accept a profoundly deaf actress. Concerned for her future, they asked Winkler not to encourage her. Winkler refused. His passion for supporting others was the result of a lifetime struggle with undiagnosed dyslexia; told he was both “lazy and stupid” as a child, he was in fact neither. A champion for children of all abilities, he mentored Matlin’s subsequent breakout career from theater to film.

At age 21, Matlin became the youngest recipient of the Best Actress Oscar - one of only four actresses to receive that honor for a film debut. Oscar in tow, Matlin found her way to Winkler’s front door and asked if she could stay for a week until she found a place to settle. Two years later she was still living with the Winklers, who consider her their adopted daughter to this day.

Together for the first time on stage, Winkler and Matlin delight audiences with an intimate dialogue revealing their profound connection and individual journeys. Through humorous anecdotes, inspirational life lessons and moving stories, Winkler and Matlin explore themes of overcoming adversity and believing in oneself. And like most family members, they interrupt each other — but often to finish each other’s sentences. Their magical bond and engaging chemistry is enhanced by their shared belief that anything is possible if you follow your dreams.

Representing opposite sides of the political spectrum, Monica Crowley & Alan Colmes usually disagree on most issues. It’s their relationship as brother and sister-in-law that takes the debate to the next level.Monica Crowley is a panelist on the legendary McLaughlin Group, which she joined in 2007. She is a longtime FOX News political and foreign affairs analyst, having joined the network at its inception in 1996 where she is a regular weekly guest on The O’Reilly Factor and America Live among many other network programs.

Her intelligent, original, and witty analysis attracted radio programmers, and she launched her radio career with a show on the number one talk station in the nation, 77 WABC in New York, in 2002. In 2005, The Monica Crowley Show was syndicated nationally, and it now airs on over 130 stations. She is also an I-Fave, appearing regularly with Don Imus on Imus in the Morning.

After a string of successful radio shows on WNBC, WABC and WMCA in New York, Alan Colmes gained a reputation as a hard-hitting liberal known for his electric commentary on the American agenda. After penetrating the Boston and New York markets with hit local radio shows, Colmes went from major market success to national talk radio prominence in 1990 with his fast-paced and informative afternoon news-driven show, which aired daily on hundreds of affiliates nationwide.

Colmes joined the FOX News Channel in 1996, and cohosted Hannity & Colmes for more than 12 years. That program became the number two show in all of cable news, helping the Fox News Channel achieve prime time dominance. Colmes’ radio show is now syndicated by FOX News and heard on terrestrial radio stations across America, XM and Sirius Satellite Radio, and the American Forces Radio Network.

His likability, humor, command of the issues, and appeal to both sides of the political plate have helped him garner the biggest audience of any liberal radio broadcaster.

Every Tuesday night Crowley and Colmes sit across from one another on Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor and debate the hot-button topics of the day. On stage, in-laws Crowley and Colmes share their political perspectives as both pundits and close relatives, making their conversation an entertaining and

insightful political debate.

Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy

The Blind Side tells the story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager turned first round draft pick NFL football player, with the support and love of an unlikely adoptive family: Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy’s life, as chronicled in Michael Lewis’ New York Times number one bestseller, The Blind Side, went on to become a record breaking Hollywood blockbuster.“Sean was an American success story: he had come from nothing and made himself rich,” wrote Michael Lewis in The Blind Side. Sean Tuohy married his college cheerleader sweetheart, the former Leigh Anne Roberts, nearly 30 years ago. Sean Tuohy was a record-breaking University of Mississippi “Ole Miss” basketball player before becoming a successful entrepreneur and NBA broadcaster. Drafted by the NBA’s New Jersey Nets in 1982, Sean continued his career overseas before returning to the US to be with his father in his final days. Sean became a successful entrepreneur, building a company that now owns and operates 70 fast food restaurants, including Taco Bell and Long John Silver’s. Sean is in his 11th season as an NBA broadcaster for the Memphis Grizzlies, after several years as an analyst for radio broadcasts at Ole Miss as well as national broadcasts for Westwood One and CBS radio.

Dubbed a “warrior princess” in The Blind Side, Leigh Anne is the inspirational matriarch of the Tuohy family. A Memphis, Tennessee native, Leigh Anne attended Briarcrest Christian School and went on to graduate from Ole Miss with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. Leigh Anne owns “Flair I,” an interior design firm with her mother and partner, Virginia Roberts. Her work has been featured on HGTV and in numerous publications and she was a member of the design team for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Season 8 during the 2010-11 season. Leigh Anne latest project is the GMC show Family Addition with Leigh Anne Tuohy which features families as they go through the practical, physical and emotional process of adding a new family member.

Sean and Leigh Anne continue to make an impact. In July 2010, they released the New York Times best-seller, In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving, and established their charity, The Making it Happen Foundation which promotes awareness, provides hope and improves standards of living for all the children fighting to survive in the invisible cracks in society.

At the podium, Sean and Leigh Anne share their personal Blind Side observations from the perspective of dedicated parents. The couple invites audiences to go behind-the-scenes of the Tuohy household

with a heartwarming message: “In our house, we believe in miracles.”

An Evening with Martin & Langston

Page 17: InConversation2013

The evening begins with Justice`s critically acclaimed portrayal of Dr. King; through the words of his most memorable speeches, Justice transforms into the legendary civil-rights leader, recreating the power of the man and his message. Justice then introduces “an old friend of mine I think you may have heard of,” and Glover enters the stage to bring to life the words and poetry of Langston Hughes. Accompanied by readings of his work, Glover portrays one of the great American writers in modern history.

A native of San Francisco, Glover attended San Francisco State College and trained at the Black Actors` Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre. He first merited national attention in the New York production of Athol Fugard`s “Master Harold and the Boys.” He has garnered rave reviews for his roles in The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Grand Canyon, To Sleep With Anger and the Lethal Weapon series. In recognition of his lifetime dedication to public service, Glover was

honored with the 2003 NAACP Chairman’s Award. In 2006, he captured Director’s Guild of America honors for his contributions to film and television.

Felix Justice grew up in Florence, S.C., and studied theater in both San Francisco and New York. His one-man Martin Luther King, Jr., show, Prophecy in America, premiered in 1981 at San Francisco`s Lorraine Hansberry Theatre and subsequently toured throughout the United States and Africa. Friends since first meeting as struggling Bay area actors years ago, Danny Glover and Felix Justice have honed a stellar performance that

stems from a long history of friendship and mutual respect, both on- and offstage.

In discussing the importance of arts in education, they examine the intersections of Art, Culture and Activism. Using examples from their lives and some of the great works of literature, both men bring to life their devotion to the education of young people and the inspiration of the next generation of leaders in the world.

Following their respective performances, Justice joins Glover on stage for a question-and-answer session to complete an evening that is memorable, heart-felt and not to be missed. To quote The Los Angeles Times: “The entire program turned out to be all about dreams…”

The first to challenge the Bush administration on its use of purported intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq, Ambassador Joseph Wilson revealed in a July 2003 New York Times article that he had been asked by the CIA to look into allegations that the Iraqis had attempted to purchase

significant quantities of uranium yellowcake from the West African country of Niger. Wilson, who had been in charge of the American Embassy in Baghdad during the first Gulf War and later served as an ambassador in the administrations of Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, concluded there was no substance to the allegations — a conviction supported by others, including the American Ambassador to Niger and a four-star Marine Corps general.

Within a week of his accusation that the White House “twisted” its intelligence to justify the Iraq invasion, his wife’s secret status as a CIA agent was revealed by senior

White House and State Department officials to several national journalists — including a syndicated conservative newspaper columnist who published her name. Valerie Plame Wilson, a longtime CIA covert operations officer involved in issues of counter-proliferation, then found herself at the heart of a political firestorm and of a Justice Department investigation that exposed what some dub an act of treason. The betrayal implicated senior administration officials, including President Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Karl Rove, Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, and the Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage. For his role in the leak case, Libby was convicted on four counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to federal investigators in March 2007.

Together the husband and wife team, whose story was made into a major motion picture starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, lay out the CIA leak controversy in an incisive and enlightening presentation. Drawing from Wilson’s memoir, The Politics of Truth, they take audiences inside two decades of world politics — from facing down Saddam Hussein to White House leaks. They share their views on the incredible events that led to Valerie Wilson’s exposure, the unprecedented abuse of public trust by the Bush administration, and its efforts to silence a critic and subvert the right of citizens to exercise free speech.
