Sec
President’s Topics Flycasting has started at Brennan Park Pool under Roger Booth and Les Crimeen’s tutelage. Do yourself a favour and front up to learn lots of tips and methods to improve your casting and therefore your catch rates. Also casting is the perfect opportunity to match your rod with different lines to suit your casting and fishing techniques for different locations be they small stream or lake. In May the Goldfields Shield will be at Lake Wendouree where Steve and Tom Charles, Jeff Willey and Alan Choat caught fish recently in Ballarat’s Two Fly Event. No doubt we will get a sound briefing on the methods, line setups and successful flies that enabled them to coax fish from the weed beds. Locally the fishing has been very patchy with fish rising only once when they have made an appearance. Alan Chisholm caught 2 stockies that were fin clipped and I netted a brown of 1lb on gold bead head nymph at creek end of Barkers Creek Reservoir. Recently, I called in to Tullaroop Reservoir on a windy day with the water having gone down considerably since I last visited with the island near the Church now accessible by vehicle. Speaking to a local he told me that the evening before, plenty of fish were taking insects on top of the water, off the eastern shore of the island. The water at both Tullaroop and Cairn Curran is very clear and smelters should be happening in the coming months. The John Crane Fly Tying Competition is getting towards the pointy end so get tying with only 2 more tying sessions remaining. Your last chance to win the club championship will be on 25
th/26
th May when we compete against
Ballarat in the Goldfield Shield at Lake Wendouree. See you on the water. Jaco.April 2013.

Fishing Report
Unfortunately I have a shortage of any recent fishing reports at the
moment. However, I am sure that members will be interested to
know that a museum “to preserve, protect and celebrate the art,
the craft and the joy of fly fishing is being set up at Clarendon in
Northern Tasmania. For those with access to the World Wide Web a
temporary website has been set up to inform us about the museum.
www.afm.net.au has excellent information about the museum.
Clarendon House is near Evandale and is one of the many
properties in Tasmania that is run by the National Trust of Australia.
There have been some small brown trout caught at Barkers Creek
Reservoir recently. I think the best local news I have heard was the
news that Lake Wendouree in Ballarat seems to be recovering from
the drought. Steve Charles, Jeff Willey and Alan Choat all caught
fish in the two fly event held recently at Lake Wendouree. From the
reports I heard the fish in Wendouree are in excellent condition and
growing well. Lake Wendouree will be a venue to keep in mind in
springtime.
A good friend is looking to buy some old editions of Flylife
magazine. In particular, if anyone has a copy of the following
editions: 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 or 21. Could you please contact me?

Casting Encounters.
The series of specific casting clinics are underway.
These casts and techniques are designed to help you improve your chances at targeting trout.
They are all about giving you better opportunities to present your flies to fool those trout.
It is not tournament casting.
Outlined below are the dates for the casts and techniques that will be covered.
The pool will be open from 1.30pm.
These sessions will commence at 2pm. on the nominated Saturdays at the pool.
Session 2. Sat. 4th May. The standard Roll cast. Plus the Peter Hayes so called Roll
Cast, [Shooting cast.] This is a must technique to have, and Peter regards this cast as his
most advantageous. [Joe Singe.] Watch Joe fling his cast across the pool.
Session 3. Sat. 11th May. The Single Haul and The Double Haul, this cast is an essential
technique for you to cast into wind, cast with power and accuracy and have greater control
of all your casts.
Session 4. Sat.18th. May. The Bow and Arrow/Flick cast.
With Rob Roles. [The Master.] A cast for really tight confined spaces.
Session 5. Sat. 1st June. My Swish and Flick casts. Casts for confined spaces.
Steeple Cast. A rarely used cast, but is it can be useful.
These clinics may be run again throughout the casting season, if there is a demand. Roger March 2013.
Quote of the Month.
“I believe that the solution to any problem----- work, love, money or whatever-------
is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be.”
John Gierach. “Standing in A River Waving a Stick.”
Casting Encounters.
Just last March I was fishing in the Corryong area in very hot conditions and I
expected to find numerous ‘Hoppers and Willow Grubs’ in evidence all about the Rivers.
Unfortunately that was not the case and the ‘Willow Grubs’ were non-existent and very
few ‘Hoppers’ were present. The Nariel Creek although running strong and clear was at 24
degrees and no Trout were to be seen and the Thougla Creek running at 19 degrees produced
only two small Browns to a ‘Parachute Adams’. However the Swampy River was running
a very fast 90 cumecs and a cool 17 degrees. This was an ideal temperature for Trout to be
active I did not see one rise on that River [except to my fly] over the full six days. Now 90
cumecs is a powerful flow and the River ran hard against the edges. The ‘Hopper feeders’
love to lay close to the banks waiting for a hapless Hopper to fall in, unfortunately there
were very few Hoppers about, but we fished the edges and by casting no more than three
feet out from the banks we rose twelve Trout and landed ten in one afternoon. All caught
on ‘Keam’s Autumn Hopper’ pattern slapped down hard at the edges in the fast flow, [I
broke my rod on one cast] the Trout’s reaction was instantaneous at the splatting fly.
A hard flow against the bank.
An eager Trout on the ‘Hopper.’
Overnight the flow fell to 60cumecs and the fishing dropped off. The Trout were no longer
in numbers along the banks and the splatting of the fly hard at the edges did not bring up
as many as before. Eventually after a few days the River ran at 3o cumecs and the Trout
response to the splatted fly fell right away. We only managed another eight Trout in four
days. It seemed to me that a falling River moved the Trout from the swift edges out into
deeper waters. It needs the River at a constant level and flow for the Trout to acclimatise
to the conditions . Roger April 2013.
A good ‘Hopper’ feeder from the edge.
Right up against the bank.
