In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing magazines?

My magazine has a conventional masthead and follows the tradition of typical music magazines as it is situated at the top of the page.

Front Cover

I have also followed the convention of naming the artists featured on my front page. This draws the reader in and helps to sell the magazine.

Lure: Like many other music magazines I have used a provocative quote to draw in readers and increase magazine sales.

Front Cover

I have also abided by the convention of using a bar code on my front page. This allows it to be easily sold in supermarkets and large music stores such as HMV.

I chose not to include a price on the front cover because I intend it to be given away to promote my magazine. To some extent this challenges codes and conventions. However, I have chosen to include the date and issue number, in order to conform with the standard music press.

Contents pageOn my contents page I have followed the convention of having a list of pages. This informs the reader what the magazine contains, as well as promoting the artists featured within the magazine.

I have also used the convention of including photographs of the artists that I plan to promote. Although the contents page of Vibe usually features only one artist whereas my contents page features three.

Double Page Spread

My double page spread has a reasonably standard set-up. I have followed the convention of having a headline at the top of the page. I have also used pull quotes to even out the look of the page. This also entices people to read the article. Like the Vibe double page spread I have only used two main colours, this stops the page from being overpowering. I also challenge the conventions somewhat with the use of a by-line, something not traditionally used in the music press.
