So when is the best time to take probiotics? It largely depends on the reason you started taking them in the first place. If you take probiotics to address digestive issues, you will gain the most benefits by taking them with meals.

Trouble sleeping? The best time to take probiotics could be before bed. A strong connection exists between the gut and the liver, and “quieting” the liver seems to help with sleep.

We often get asked when the best time to take a probiotic is–morning, evening, before or after food. Taking probiotics at any time is better than not taking them at all, but taking probiotics at the right time can optimize their use.

Stomach Acid and Timing

The vast majority of probiotics are active and effective in the lower gastrointestinal tract. To get to the lower portion of your GI tract, bacteria must survive corrosive stomach acid. The stomach was designed, not only to begin the digestive process, but also to repel and destroy microbes ingested with food, so it’s important to protect the probiotic bacteria as they pass through.

When your stomach is empty, it’s very acidic. Gastric pH is less acidic after food intake; however the introduction of food also elicits the digestive process and enzymes that may damage the probiotics. This makes it challenging to figure out exactly when the best time to take probiotics is. We tend to believe the thought that taking probiotics with a light meal may help reduce their exposure to harsh stomach acid and assist their passage into the lower intestines. Heavy meals, that take longer to digest, may delay the movement of the probiotic into the lower GI tract and are not recommended.

Unfortunately, there has been little research comparing the benefits of taking probiotics with or without meals, or at different times of day. We hope to see more research into this area in the future so we can better answer these questions.

When is the best time to take probiotics?

The body secretes stress hormones to help us effectively handle situations in life. Hormone levels return to normal once the stressor is removed in a healthy stress response. A study done on excessive stress levels induced by exercise demonstrated that “excessive exercise training can push the neuroendocrine exercise stress response to become inappropriate, resulting in the potential development of chronic fatigue and the overtraining syndrome condition.”(1) While the physical stress induced by exercise is controllable, the study shows that while low to moderate levels of physical stress can be beneficial, high levels can be detrimental to health.

In a practical, real-life setting, the lower levels of chronic stress

to the sympathetic nervous system that we face every day can have a similar effect on our health. Our body attempts to adapt by adjusting physiological responses and behavior to maintain stability. A recent study explained the fundamental role of the HPA axis in orchestrating our physical reaction to stress, and how chronically-elevated cortisol levels suppress the immune system and induce glycogenolysis and insulin resistance.(2) Could this be one of the smoking guns that will help to explain the dramatic increase in the rate of obesity?

So assuming stress is unavoidable, what can a patient do in addition to making dietary changes and implementing stress management techniques? Providing daily adrenal support in the form of adaptogenic herbs for an already healthy system is a crucial piece that is gaining awareness. Pharmaceutical Grade Raw Material

Little Differences.

In the past, Doctor’s Choice used a maximum of 2% magnesium stearate or stearic acid as a flow agent, and only when the raw material was clumping. Since 2015, we have substituted it for ascorbyl palmitate, the fat soluble version of vitamin C. Some older labels may not reflect these changes yet, but they are currently being updated and replaced. We made this change because some neurological studies have found evidence that stearic acid may collapse cell membranes and selectively kill T-cells, breaking down the body’s immune system.(1) Another reason is that stearate is commonly sourced from hydrogenated oils such as cottonseed oil. This crop is often genetically engineered and usually has very high levels of pesticide residues, even if it’s not genetically engineered.

We have also substituted all inactive forms of minerals with the methylated active forms, such as Folic Acid with 5-MTHF folate, B6 Pyridoxine HCL with Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) form, and B12 Cyanocobalamin with B12 Methylcobalamin, etc.

We use only glass or PET certified packaging, even the cotton used is certified organic and USP pharmaceutical grade. Quality at every level is paramount when producing medicines, and the little differences that may not be evident on the shelf do add up-either to a great product, or a not-so-great product. Now that you know what goes into making a great product, we hope you feel better equipped when choosing the best product for your health needs.

Using natural health methodologies for conditions can be a daunting task. There are many brands to choose from, and many overlapping products. However, there are some underlying differences you may not be aware of.

For nutritional products, the raw materials used in manufacturing can be broken down into 3 grades: pharmaceutical, which meets pharmaceutical standards of purity (97.5%+); food grade, which meets the standards for human consumption (more added fillers); and feed grade, which meets the standards for animal consumption (low quality, not much regulation). Some supplements (especially if the supplements aren’t very expensive) would qualify as feed grade. The difference between the grades is essentially in the processing, which may have harsh chemical extraction residue, lack of quality testing, and less absorption.

USP pharmaceutical grade products meet the highest available

standards. Since 1906, USP has been the standard for quality and purity of therapeutic agents used by the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA. Basically, if the raw material is USP pharmaceutical grade, it’s the gold standard in the medical industry-it’s the material trusted by pharmaceutical companies and the FDA.

Doctor’s Choice uses only 100% DMF (drug master file) pharmaceutical grade raw material. It costs us 500-700% more for our raw material than material that has no USP standards or that is unpatented. We do it because we know the pharmaceutical grade material is clinically researched, and we know the quality of pharmaceutical grade material will be consistently high with each order. Because the material is as pure as possible and doesn’t have unnecessary fillers, when you take our supplements, you are getting as much of that high grade raw material as possible-it’s not diluted down with fillers or processed with a lot of chemicals.
