Hello Melton Drivers,

I would like to start by giving a shout out to our Driver of the Month, Rick Legue, and Rookie of the Month, Matthew Lanig. Thank you both for your outstanding work!

As for an update on business, freight is strong and trucks are staying busy! Remember that winter weather is fast approaching, so please be prepared. Below-freezing temperatures have arrived, and snow and ice accumulations are creating hazardous conditions for drivers. Please be very careful when working and driving in the winter weather. Stay safe, warm, and pay attention to the forecasts, as conditions can change very quickly.

With the temperatures falling, it’s time to think about diesel fuel anti-gel or winter diesel fuel treatment. If the ambient temperatures are 25 degrees or lower, it’s time to treat the fuel with anti-gel. There are many brands of anti-gel or winter diesel fuel treatment available, so it’s crucial that you follow the instructions on the label when adding this product to your fuel tanks. Its best to add the anti-gel while you are filling the tanks because it helps mix the anti-gel and fuel together.

Trip planning is your best protection against diesel fuel gelling up. Remember that you could load in warm weather and deliver in a very cold area. Here are a few tips for keep in mind this winter:

• Check the weather on your driving route. • Always have anti-gel with you. • Treat the fuel BEFORE it gets below 25 degrees.

All the Melton terminals have anti-gel, so get some while you’re there. If you don’t have any, call Outside Repair (918-779-6679) and they will assist you.

We are seeing an increase in idle time on trucks that don’t have an APU. If you do not have an APU on your truck, you still need to turn the truck off. While this is expected to a point, there are some trucks that have excessive idle and those drivers need to work on turning the truck off just a few extra hours a day. We don’t want you to freeze or overheat, but there are times when you can shut the engine off to help lower the idle percentage to a reasonable point. For example, you should be turning the engine off when fueling, away from the truck, and during pre or post trip inspections.

Just a few hours a day will make a huge improvement in your overall idle percentage and it will also help lower the chance of the dreaded ‘Check Engine’ lights coming on. High idle time causes the emission system to work extra hard. The lower the idle percentage, the better the system works.

In conclusion, I would like to wish all of our drivers a safe and productive month. We appreciate your hard work and dedication to our great company.

Jeff RobinsonSenior Vice President of Maintenance

Jail N’ Bail United Way CampaignOur 2018 United Way campaign was a huge success and one of our most popular activities is Jail N’ Bail! For the event, members from each depart-ment submit ‘warrants’ for their chosen VP or manager to enter the jail. A bail amount is set and, if the jail member does not collect their set bail be-fore jail time, they must spend 30 minutes in the jail with no phone access!

In total, we had 14 jailbirds enter the United Way jail and raised $5,233.35! Thank you to all of those who donated and participated in this fun activity!

Lack of time is one of the top reasons people cite for skipping daily exercise. No matter who you are or what you do for a living, it seems as if everyone is busier these days. It’s easy to have work, family, social engagements and other responsibilities trump physical activity on the priority list.

If this sounds familiar, you need to get creative to fit in regular physical activity. By making small changes to your routine, it is possible to burn a considerable amount of extra calories, all while building strength and cardiovascular fitness. Here are some of the top research-backed methods to get fit at work—even if you are in front of a computer or pushing paper much of the day.

Fidget: Research has shown even small movements throughout the day add up when it comes to burning calories. This includes everything from walking to the water cooler a couple of extra times a day to getting up and moving around to organize your cubicle. Dubbed “nonexercise activity thermogenesis,” those small, seem-ingly insignificant movements can make all the difference.

Take the Stairs: Simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator each day can help you shed extra weight; you don’teven need to break a sweat. Studies have demonstrated climbing a regular public-access staircase meets the minimum requirements for gaining cardiovascular benefits. While it may take you a couple of extra minutes to reach your desk each morning, you’ll be doing your body good—plus you’ll forego listening to that annoying elevator music.

Park Farther Away: Walking an extra several hundred meters from your car to the office every day can add up in terms of total step count, and research has shown that walking 10,000 steps each day can lead to weight loss. While that may sound like a lot, you’d be surprised by how quickly those steps add up when you’re purposeful about walking more.

October 2018 Nutrition Strategy @ Guckenheimer Inflammation in the Body Your immune system attacks anything in your body that it recognizes as foreign—such as an invading microbe, pollen, or chemical – through inflammation. Intermittent bouts of inflammation directed at truly threatening invaders protect your health.

However, sometimes inflammation persists, day in and day out, even when you are not threatened by a foreign invader. That's when inflammation can become your enemy. Many major diseases that plague us—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer's—have been linked to chronic inflammation. Foods that Combat Inflammation

One of the most powerful tools to combat inflammation can come from food. Produce is high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols – protective compounds found in plants. Reducing the risk of inflammation means reducing the risk of chronic disease. To help reduce your risk of illness, include plenty of these anti-inflammatory foods in your diet:

Tomatoes Olive oil Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and

collards Nuts like almonds and walnuts Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and

oranges Coffee and tea contain polyphenols and other anti-

inflammatory compounds, may protect against inflammation

Inflammation-promoting foods

Not surprisingly, the same foods that contribute to inflammation are generally considered foods to limit, including sodas and refined carbohydrates, as well as red meat and

processed meats. Foods dense in calories can also contribute to weight gain, which is itself a risk factor for inflammation. In several studies, after researchers took obesity into account, the link between foods and inflammation remained, which suggests weight isn't the sole driver. Anti-inflammatory eating

Aim for an overall healthy diet which may not only reduce the risk of chronic disease, but also pay dividends on mood and quality of life. If you're looking for an eating plan that closely follows the tenets of anti-inflammatory eating, consider the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils. Recipe Corner: Warm Kale & White Bean Dip

Ingredients (makes 4 servings) 2 Tbsp olive oil, divided 2 cups frozen kale 1 shallot, thinly sliced ¼ cup white wine 1 garlic clove, minced 15-oz can cannellini beans ¼ tsp red pepper flakes 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese 1 tsp salt, divided Whole grain crackers or bread, for serving

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. Heat 1 Tbsp oil in a large nonstick

skillet. Sauté the shallot over medium-high heat until soft, 3 minutes. Add the garlic, red pepper and 1/2 tsp salt and cook 1 more minute.

2. Fold in the kale and cook, stirring occasionally for 2 minutes. Add the white wine and simmer until evaporated, 2 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, in a small food processor, puree the beans with 1/2 tsp salt, 1 Tbsp olive oil and 1/4 cup water until smooth. Add the white bean puree to the kale mixture along with 1/4 cup Parmesan and stir to combine. Top with the remaining cheese.

4. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until the cheese has begun to brown. Serve warm alongside whole grain crackers or bread for dipping.

We will continue to deliver the required training to you in a number of ways, including hotline messages, daily terminal safety meetings, terminal monitors, online training links, email blasts, QUALCOMM tips, and driver manager reinforcement. Please make sure we have an email address for you so you can receive our weekly Safety email. Remember participating in the training is required and will earn you extra points on your scorecard.

This month we will focus on: Right Hand TurnsWrong Way TurnsFor truck drivers, managing the space around their vehicle is always a priority. Managing that space during right hand turns can be challenging and/or dangerous. A buttonhook turn is one in which the tractor and the trailer are swung wide prior to the turn being made in order to not encroach upon oncoming traffic during the completion of the turn. This maneuver leaves enough space on the passenger side of the truck for traffic to pull into. Additionally, the passenger side of the truck is also the most difficult to see. The use of buttonhook turns should be avoided whenever possible.

The Safer Maneuver - Box TurnsBegin by setting the truck and trailer up as far to the right as possible; ideally, 1-2 feet from the curb/edge of the road. If necessary, stop a few feet before the intersection. When beginning to move again, turn the truck to the left slightly so that it is pointing at the 10:00 position. Pull forward 15-20 feet. Then turn the steering wheel all the way to the right while moving slowly. Look in the right hand mirror and note the position of the front trailer axle. Steer and counter steer to have the front axle trailer tires maintain the same distance from the curb throughout the turn.

Using this maneuver decreases the amount of space needed to make a right hand turn and effectively blocks the inside of the turn preventing traffic from passing you on the right hand side. This reduces the likelihood of being involved a right turn squeeze collision.

Right Hand Turn Rules to Remember

1. Look both ways – Clear your path of travel before beginning the turn. 2. Be Alert – Continue to watch both sets of mirrors and the front of your truck.3. Evaluate oncoming traffic – Be sure the intersection is clear before starting your turn.4. Know your vehicle – Be aware of how much space is needed to safely make a right hand turn.5. Turn Slowly

Bulkheads and X-StrapsBy Pax Rolfe, Safety Generalist

Load securement compliance is a serious matter! With the introduction of CSA, load securement is seeing even more scrutiny. It is mandatory to have two pieces of securement within the first five feet of any section of your load. In addition to that, you can use the following devices to help control forward motion and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.

• Hazard Recognition: The first step to driving safely in the winter is to recognize that cold weather creates unique hazards that must be dealt with effectively each time the truck is operated. Fuel gels when the temperature drops, ice forms on roads, vehicles and systems; especially at night. Blowing snow limits visibility and cold temps can be dangerous. For more information, contact the safety department.

• Prepare for Winter: Pay attention to weather reports and prep the truck and yourself in advance. Add anti-gel when fueling, drain the air tanks nightly, use RainX on windows and mirrors, dry brake drums and shoes at every stop. Have and use warm clothing and trip plan to minimize weather impact. Having some basic tools will help combat ice and snow; a pry bar, an ice scraper, and a broom or shovel to remove accumulation. For more suggestions, contact the safety department.

• Following Distance: Wet, icy, and snowy roads are slick and require increased awareness of driving, weather and traffic conditions. Stopping distance is greatly increased so following distance needs to be doubled to at least 16 seconds. Reduce speed, apply brakes early and softly, don’t use cruise control or jake brakes and be prepared to compensate for other’s mistakes. Having enough space to stop straight ahead is always your best “out.” For more suggestions, contact the safety department.

• Black Ice: Black ice is actually very thin, clear ice that allows the pavement to be seen through it and giving the road the appearance of just being wet. It is extremely dangerous because it is so hard to see and most often occurs at night after a partial daytime thaw. Look for spray from other vehicle’s tires; no spray means that roads aren’t wet, they are icy. Reduce speed and avoid quick, sharp movements of the steering wheel. For more suggestions, contact the safety department.
