Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), a leader in

providing world-class education in Oil & Gas and allied energy

sectors has also taken an initiative of inculcating human values

and has tried to tap the talent pool in the form of future

leadership for the world by introducing the School of Liberal

Studies. PDPU realizes the global requirement of producing

young leaders with inquisitiveness and passion for knowledge

and wisdom. The global market expects students not just to be

‘informed’ but also ‘enlightened’ and ‘responsible’ today. Young

leaders have to chart their own path with innovative solutions

for the world today which are seasoned with social concerns.

Liberal Studies programme, which is highly popular abroad is

the need of the hour for the Indian society.

As the second batch of the School of Liberal Studies is on the

verge of climbing the pedestals of research, careers and self-

realization for a better world tomorrow, I convey my best wishes

to the students and hope that the School with its advanced

academic structure and innovative approach will enable

students to participate in constructive work to achieve dignified

quality of life through intellectually self-propelled pursuits.

I am sure the inclusion of students from Liberal Studies in

the workforce would bring interdisciplinary perspectives and

PI feel a great sense of privilege in presenting the class of 2014 to

you. For a few years now, The School of Liberal Studies at PDPU

has passionately engaged itself in providing a program where

students and faculty can encourage intellectual exploration

and discovery of ideas and concepts to promote the individual’s

mind for lifelong learning. This learning is achieved in a variety

of modes across a wide spectrum of disciplines. We offer a

choice of majors complemented by many minor courses to

embed the consistent delivery of holistic learning.

The 4 year undergraduate program provides an opportunity

for students to broadbase their exposure through internships

and applied study programs. These endeavors allow our

students to combine their classroom education with practical

workforce experience so that our graduates are qualified for

successful careers. On our part, we have ensured that our

undergraduate students are immersed in an environment of

academic research, creativity and primary research where they

develop basic skills to effect change and indulge in out of the

box thinking in their chosen fields. Our collaborations with

international institutions of repute also provides an opportunity

to experience internships with a strong academic flavor.

I invite you to visit our campus, and assess our students for their

professional capabilities as an attestation of the differentiated

learning delivered through this unique program.

The Second Batch of School of Liberal Studies of Pandit Deendayal

Petroleum University Gandhinagar is passing out their first pedestal

and is preparing for the placement and further studies. The journey

of this batch has just begun and there are still ‘miles to go’.

I am happy that the students after making their way through 30

interdisciplinary courses have also dived into the depth of major

and minor of their interest. I am confident that the liberal arts

pedagogy has given them lifelong desire to learn and update their

skills and aptitude that all modern corporations look for.

School of Liberal Studies has put all efforts to create future leaders

of the society, who, I am sure, will contribute tremendously in

building our country. These students have achieved excellence in

their field of studies.

Mahatma Gandhi used to say, “I do not want my house to be walled

in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures

of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible.

But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any. I refuse to live in other

people’s houses as an interloper, a beggar or a slave.”

As the second batch of School of Liberal Studies is climbing the

first step of their corporate ladder, I am confident that the liberal

arts pedagogy has not only provided them enough exposure to the

global trends and demands but has also sensitized them to the

grass root realities and challenges of Indian society.

I express my heartfelt best wishes to the batch and would like to

convey, “From those who have received much, much is expected”.

I look forward to the relevant and genuine contribution from the

batch for the nation and for the global society.

It intends to broaden the opportunities for students and professionals to develop core subject knowledge which are duly complemented by leadership training interventions, thereby helping the students to make a mark in the global arena.

This objective is being further addressed through a number of specialized and well-planned undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs as well as intensive research projects.

about SLSPDPU launched School of Liberal Studies in the year 2009, which currently offers a four year Bachelor degree that equips a student to develop an array of intellectual skills, a variety of methodologies or ways of understanding our changing world, and a broad base of varied knowledge. In turn, such a liberal education establishes an invaluable foundation for more specialized study in one’s major or in one of the professions, and for a life-long affinity for learning and continuing intellectual development.

The course imparts classical education in various fields like art, literature, languages, music, dramatics, philosophy, politics, history, law, mathematics, science and general studies. It emphasizes on the need to seek knowledge for knowledge’s sake, promoting intellectual growth, creative expression and rational thought.

Welcome to the School of Liberal Studies Gandhinagar. I take pride in introducing you to a relatively new program in India which aims to create and sustain an intellectually challenging and diverse academic environment through excellent teaching, scholarship, and service in the humanities, management and social sciences. The idea of Liberal Arts finds its roots in western education and is lately being redesigned to meet the changing expectations of diverse businesses who value individuals with the skills to bring in a holistic approach to the workplace. This multidisciplinary approach which is native to the liberal arts curriculum promotes independent thinking, adopts a holistic perspective, stimulates one for lifelong learning, enhances one’s judgement, wisdom and faith and essentially develops the mind to function in an open ended way.

While keeping pace with the ongoing explosion of knowledge, the school teaches those skills most valued by today’s employers and graduate schools, including problem-solving, communication, cross-cultural understanding, and global awareness. We also foster students’ self-understanding, helping them to develop values as they consider moral issues or raise important ethical questions.

As our students graduate and move into their professional roles, i am sure they will appreciate the relevance of liberal arts education in their lives and work and in many ways an increasingly complex society.

We will be glad to hear from you and sincerely hope you will find your visit an engaging experience.

INDUSTRY SPEAK

SLS offers cutting edge programs focused on exposure and exploration for the students which is the need of the hour. Certainly industries require technical people, however for strategic and long term sustainable growth of any organization; they need leaders and creative thinkers who are able to think beyond the box. Liberal Studies help students obtain such competencies. India needs strategic thinkers, visionaries and motivating leaders. An employee of liberal study back-ground would be the end of search for Indian employers certainly.

According to me, liberal education lies above all other disciplines or forms of education. Due to the knowledge of various subjects and the high exposure provided by School Of Liberal Studies, the students undoubtedly stand apart from their counterparts in other colleges. In future, they would not only have the ability to understand their work, but they would also be able to perceive and interpret their environmental cues very efficiently. They are the torch bearers, visionaries and leaders of the future. Organizations need them.
