IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

This week saw a continuation of similar results in the

Livestock industry with the shining light being the

mutton market with mainland processors leading the

way in sales. Whilst scale prices for mutton are staying

still, physical markers are achieving solid results. Lambs

and cattle remain the same with large numbers on

offer for both descriptions.

Forward contracts for lambs are about with 600 cents

per kg being floated for June deliveries. Contact your

Roberts agent for more details on this.

Yesterday saw another great result for vendors at the

Powranna livestock marketing complex with 3,000

cattle offered to strong local and interstate demand. In

total 33% of cattle will make the journey across Bass

Straight. Local purchasers paid special attention to

cattle that can be purchased and continue in producer

program whilst feedlot backgrounders were strong on

Angus steers with the ability to feed on.

Heavy steers 290-330 cents per kg, medium steers 330-

380 cents, light steers 300-400 per kg liveweight.

Heifers remain on a similar result to previous sales

with all descriptions being 280-310 cents per kg

liveweight.

An excellent offering of cows and calves achieved up to

$1,450 per unit.

Poll Hereford and Murray Grey bull sales are just

around the corner for breeders looking for good

genetics. Contact Tim Woodham or Jock Gibson to

discuss.

The Final weaner sale for this year is being held on May

12 at Powranna for any buyers or sellers to consider.

On the surface the wool market has had another disappointing week, with AWEX reporting the bench mark EMI at its lowest point in six months. But there is more to the story than the base price. Demand remains steady, and in US$ terms the market for 19MPG and finer actually lifted. Again the A$ is the main player in determining the prices received by growers at auction.

Of course, the price paid in A$ is what matters to growers, so the strong A$ is a real thorn in the side of the wool market at the moment. It actually peaked on Wednesday hitting a 10 month high of US$0.783.

Growers responded to the lower prices by Passing In 6,400 bales, or 15.2% of the 42,000 bales that was offered. This needs to be considered in context with the increased offering; there was still 35,500 bales sold (same as last week). So the trade is getting similar amounts each week, and in US$ terms paying a similar price which indicates demand while not buoyant is at least stable.

A look at individual MPG categories identifies that 19 MPG and finer traded at higher levels in US$ terms for the week, especially in Melbourne & Sydney. In fact, looking at the 19 MPG we see that the price in A$’s has tracked sideways after the price rally in October 2015. The price range in A$ since then has been between 1361 & 1451 with the current price at 1345 cents.

This hasn’t been to the buyers benefit though, the range in US$ has been 940 to 1102, with the current price almost at the range high level sitting at 1080. To repeat, the stronger A$ in a market with steady/

stable demand is hurting wool growers returns.

Cardings are almost back to the price levels they were trading at 12 months ago; as has been regularly mentioned the demand (and therefore the price) of cardings has been unprecedented.

There are sales in all three centres next week on Wednesday and Thursday, however only 39,000 bales are rostered. While this week 42,000 bales came forward, this time last week the brokers were rostering 49,078 bales.

Based on our view of demand and the appearance that the trade is comfortable with the current prices in US$ terms, at the very least we should see a firm market. As of writing this report (Friday morning), the A$ has lost US$0.01cent since close of selling; this suggests we could in fact pull back much of the losses of this week.

"Nalinga" was developed by the Blundstone family in the 1920's and has always been in various arms of the Blundstone family to this day. For 70 years "Nalinga" has been recognised as one of the best early prime lamb producing properties in Tasmania. The property has in the past produced many hectares of lucerne pasture but at present the lucerne content is minimal. This lucerne base in the past has greatly helped in its lamb production. The property is now subdivided into 12 paddocks, serviced by reticulated water troughs from a permanent creek via holding tanks. The property is currently producing prime lambs to meet the milk lamb and prime lamb market. Beef cattle are also raised on the property. Centrally located on the Island and only minutes to Whitemark, this is an

affordable property that can produce a top product that gives a good return for investment. Additional features include: - 3 stand shearing shed - Machinery shed - Sheep and cattle yards
