Whether in her best-selling cookbook or on her cooking shows, popular lifestyle blog, and social media platforms followed by millions of loyal fans, Ayesha Curry embraces each moment with an effortless, vibrant authenticity. To remain centered, the busy mom, celebrity chef and wife to NBA superstar Stephen Curry brings the family together with food and uses mealtime to forge connections.

AYESHA CURRY

IN THE KITCHEN WITH

It sounds like much of your childhood was spent in the kitchen. What was your childhood like and who were your biggest influences in

the kitchen?

I grew up with two parents who worked, so the way I was able to contribute and

help out around the house was in the kitchen. I loved to cook. Our family was pretty big and our house was always a place where everyone gathered. Food was always at the center of those gatherings, so it became a very influential part of my upbringing. At a very young age I loved to watch cooking shows and used to fall asleep to episodes of Emeril and Rachael Ray. They were both big influences for me and my love of food.

You have created an inspired personal brand that is vast and includes TV, cookbooks, a social media empire, restaurant, food products and a soon to be launched home products line all based around your personal formula FOOD + FAMILY + FAITH = BEST LIFE. What does living your best life look like for you? What is your definition and how do you want this to inspire others?

Living your best life is just about doing what you love and sharing it with the people you love. At the center of everything I do both personally and professionally, I’m driven by things that inspire me and that I’m passionate about.

You have two adorable children, Riley and Ryan. How often do you cook together and what is your favorite thing to make together?

I love bringing my girls into the kitchen, and they love to help. I have a large garden outside and will bring the girls out to help pick the vegetables when they’re ripe. It’s not just something fun we’re able to do together, but a great education for them to understand where their food comes from. Most recently I made a fresh tomato jam with my oldest daughter using tomatoes from my garden.

‘‘ With motherhood as my muse

and faith by my side, those moments of family together time in the kitchen is where my balance begins, where

we can all just be.’’

Your brand continues to grow out of your passion for food + cooking and in October your lifestyle line from Meyer Corporation will launch across the country. Tell us what inspired you to want to create this line.

My inspiration comes from my own experience in discovering how satisfying and pleasurable it is to cook in your own kitchen and

wanting to share that passion with others. Often, there’s a lack

of confidence in cooking. My hope is that my line of cookware, bakeware and other kitchen products will encourage others to get in the kitchen and see for themselves how effortless, chic and fun cooking can be.

Your line includes cookware, bakeware, stoneware, cast iron, kitchen tools and gadgets, and warm beverage items. What are some of your favorite pieces within the collection?

One of my favorite pieces is the cast iron skillet. I use it for everything! It’s great for pancakes, great for getting that perfect sear on a nice cut of meat. And the best part is, it gets better with time. Everything you cook “seasons the cast iron” and can be enjoyed by generations for years and years. I’m also really excited about my bacon grease jar. :)

What next on the horizon?

I’m looking forward to enhancing and expanding my line with new items and collections that will inspire people to get into the kitchen and express themselves in their own ways. My hope is that the line grows to become a brand that people trust and love as much as I do.

Serves 4 - 6

INGREDIENTSChicken:8 bone-in, skin on chicken thighs (about 3 ¾ pounds)Kosher saltFreshly ground black pepper1 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil1 tablespoon unsalted butter1 shallot, chopped3 garlic cloves, chopped½ cup dry white wine½ cup orange juice1 tablespoon honeyLeaves from 3 thyme sprigs

Carrots:2 cups chopped carrotsKosher salt¼ cup heavy cream, at room temperature1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room temperature ½ teaspoon ground cuminFreshly ground black pepper

ORANGE-THYME CHICKEN THIGHS WITH CARROT PUREE

PREPARATIONTo make the chicken:Preheat the oven to 425. Season the chicken thighs generously on all sides with salt and pepper.

Heat the oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. In two batches, brown the chicken thighs, skin side down, until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes for each batch. Transfer the chicken to a plate. Discard all but 1 tablespoon of the fat in the pan.

Lower the heat to medium and melt the butter. Saute the shallot until translucent, about 1 minute, adding the garlic halfway through cooking. Add the wine and orange juice and bring to a boil, dislodging any bits of food from the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Stir in honey and thyme and simmer until the sauce has reduced slightly, 3 to 5 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and put the chicken back in the skillet, skin side up. Bake the thighs until tender when pierced with a fork, about 30 minutes. Let the chicken rest in their juices while you make the carrot puree.

To make the carrot puree:Put the carrots and few pinches of salt in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then lower to medium-low and simmer until the carrots just being to turn tender, about 12 minutes. Drain the carrots and transfer to a blender. Add the cream, butter, and cumin and blend until smooth. Season with a few generous pinches each of salt and pepper.

To serve, spoon the carrot puree onto serving plates and top with the chicken thighs.

Two of the best ways to achieve healthier living are through nutrition

and bonding with your tribe. Nourishing your body and soul with healthy foods and genuine human connections significantly improves your life. You become happier, healthier, stronger and more fulfilled. Recent studies show you might even live longer.

So any opportunity to bring together food and people you love most is one you shouldn’t miss. One of my favorite things in life is family mealtime. This might seem like an ancient concept in today’s rushed and hectic world, but I think everyone can benefit from making the effort. And I believe and teach my patients how it can be done. I was raised by parents who strongly believed that sharing time around the dinner table was an important part of our family dynamic. Decades later, the time spent preparing and eating meals together remain some of my favorite memories. My wife, Kali, and I share this belief and are teaching our three children the joy and importance of family mealtime. There are few things I love more than making these new memories together. Our Sunday tradition is healthy omelets with organic eggs loaded with fresh vegetables. We blast music, dance, sing, make a bit of a mess and bond! We all pitch in. Each of us partakes in the cooking and cleaning. We sit around the table as a family and enjoy conversation, laughter and eating a healthy meal. There are times when Kali and I are rushed and it would be much easier to do the cooking ourselves - or just call for take-out. But we don’t want to miss out on these special moments ... these opportunities to watch our children learn and grow and become more independent. MEALTIME IS ABOUT MORE THAN FOOD. Experts say that one of the most important things you can do for your health is to cook at

home. Involving your children is an effective way to start a conversation about health and nutrition and fosters good habits that will have lifelong benefits. Research shows children who are involved in family mealtimes may be:• 35% less likely to engage in disordered eating• 24% more likely to eat healthier foods• 12% less likely to be overweight It gets even better. The process of preparing and sharing a meal sharpens important developmental skills including: • Comprehension (reading and understanding recipes)• Communication (talking to parents and siblings in a relaxed, fun atmosphere)• Math (measuring ingredients, fractions)• Motor skills (great developmental opportunity for younger children)• Life skills (learning to cook at a young age makes for an easier transition into an independent adult)• Self-confidence (contributing to “adult” responsibilities) • Open-mindedness (cooking is universal to all genders and cultures). START YOUR OWN MEALTIME TRADITION. One of the most common times that children and parents communicate is when sitting around the dining table, so encourage open communication by eliminating distractions. Turn off the TV and silence the cell phones. You’ll be able to engage and connect more deeply. I know it’s never easy. It would be so much easier to let our children sit in the living room playing video games or watch TV. But our goal is to instill good habits and teach them life skills that they will carry throughout their lives and eventually pass on to their own families. I love spending time with my tribe in our kitchen. It’s always one of my favorite moments of the day. Despite spills, messes and the occasional burnt finger, this time together is priceless. We work together, clean together and feast together. My parents taught me the importance of a connected family. Their dedication to our tribe not only provided me with some of my favorite experiences, but prepared me to instill those same values in my children. Hopefully, Kali and I are providing them with a tradition that they will cherish forever.

UNTIL ONE NIGHT, WHEN HER LIFE UTTERLY CHANGED.Teresa is the #1 international bestselling author of Mass Influence - The Habits of the Highly Influential, which is now a bestseller in 7 countries. As the founder and chair of the Evolutionary Business Council, Teresa works with people around the world wanting to create grassroots change in communities and businesses. A four-time bestselling author, Teresa believes we can shift the thinking of society just by understanding how to generate the spread of positive word of mouth.

Teresa’s story is inspirational and we were thrilled to sit down and learn more about her Health Hero journey!

You’ve had an incredible career to say the least! How did your path unfold leading you to writing your new best seller, Mass Influence?

To say I’ve been blessed would be an understatement. But I love the Virgil quote “fortune favours the bold.” Or the more current version that “luck is just opportunity meeting preparedness.”But the biggest part of that is mental preparedness.

How does a single mom with a good job as a leader in Canada’s oil and gas sector have the courage to step away from all the security and start a business? For me, it started with what I now affectionately call my really bad year. Within a short span, my business had failed, my father had passed away, my marriage had ended, my health was in a tailspin. The only thing truly clear to me was how incredibly unhappy I was.

One night, my life utterly changed.

I’m sitting on the bathroom floor of my new (post marriage-breakup) condo. Tools surround me as I’ve always been a renovator and this bathroom is going to be my latest project. And there are tears stream-ing down my face because all I can think is, “It’s me that needs renovat-ing.” I’m looking back over the past decade of outward success in my life, and I can’t honestly point to a time when I remember being fully lit-up happy.

In that moment I decide I’m going to be my next project. Over the course of the next two years, I started shift-ing everything, from my health to starting a new business. And my life changed radically. Including starting a charity to build schools in Africa and writing three children’s books to raise money for that charity.

But, after putting all three kids books on the bestseller lists, I found doz-ens of people started asking me for help with doing the same thing with their projects. The thing I found my-self most often doing and enjoying was teaching others how to create a movement around their work. So I rebranded myself overnight and I’ve never looked back. Mass Influence, my latest book, is the natural out-come of that journey. It’s the hand-book for those who would create a movement to create positive change in the world.

For me, that utter collapse of my life was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Because it forced me to change my mindset about how I create my life.

You clearly have a passion that is reflected in your work. Can you describe your journey of finding and following your passion?

Once I found my desire to help good people, everyday heroes, under-stand how to create a movement for change, my life started evolving pretty rapidly. But I truly stepped into my passion the day the Evolutionary Business Council was born.

I was hosting an event about seven years ago and had brought in sever-al emerging thought-leaders I greatly admire to speak at the event - Dr. Shawne Duperon, Jennifer Hough, Daniel Gutierrez and Harrison Klein - just to name a few.

After the event I brought everyone up to the mountains near Canmore Alber-ta just to have a fun weekend to enjoy hanging out. We’re all sitting around relaxing that night and from my mouth emerges, “Someday, when I’m influ-ential enough, I’d love to start a big mastermind-like community for people who really want to create shift and change in world. I think that would re-ally be a wonderful force for change.”

Everyone in the room starts laughing.

I’m not getting the joke. Dan Gutier-rez looks at me and says, “Weren’t you on stage 5 hours ago telling our audience to pay attention when the words “someday I will” come out of your mouth?” Dan pauses for effect. “I believe you mentioned something about “Maybe someday is now. And Maybe your inner dialogue is just convincing you you’re not ready.”

“So when are you going to do that, Teresa?” Jennifer Hough asserts with a massive grin.

In that moment the EBC is born. And the people around that room be-came our first Board of Directors.

The truth is, I’ve never felt worthy to lead the EBC. Who could ever be smart enough or strong enough to

lead an organization of some of the most wonderful change-agents you could ever meet? But somehow that makes it all the sweeter. That some-how the Universe chose me, it’s im-perfect daughter, to teach others that you don’t have to be perfect to do something the world needs.

You do incredible work with the Evolutionary Business Council. Can you tell us more about what EBC is all about?

The EBC is a community of people who are working to teach transfor-mational principles inside their work. Transformational principles are often described as success principles - they’re the body of work that shows us what is possible in our lives if we can change the way we think and live.

We include speakers, trainers, radio & TV hosts and documentary mak-ers. And our members work to sup-port and assist one another in cre-ating word of mouth and influence around each other’s work.

The Evolutionary Business Coun-cil is putting together the Vista Mundo community. Can you ex-plain more about this community and what the overall goal is?

Vista Mundo is an intentional com-munity that some of the members of the EBC are building together in Costa Rica’s Central Valley. The intention of the community is to not only live sustainably, but to be a place where transformational work is taught and embodied.

When you bring visionaries together, people who believe we can change the world for the better, magic is pos-sible. Vista Mundo will be a communi-ty of people who believe in giving back to the community. Whether it is the lo-cal community, or the global one.

Aristotle first coined the term “Eudai-monia” to describe the happiness that comes from making your life about the greater good. He wrote about it as a higher form of happi-ness from hedonistic pursuit of self-indulgent pleasures.

October 2017

You coined the phrase “word of mouth pandemic.” Can you tell us what this means to you?

Word of mouth is a fascinating thing. And when it starts spreading with the right people an idea or movement can go global overnight. What it really means is that a lot of influential people are talking about you or your idea all at the same time. So you need relationship with a lot of influential people.

For most people that’s hard to imag-ine. Maybe you’ve tried to phone up someone influential and offered to buy them lunch. Do this and faster than you can say “gate-keeper” you’ll learn that there’s a different rule book with the highly influential.

So causing a movement around your work is really as simple as learning this new set of rules

Tribe is another important facet to success in life and in individual health and wellness. What are the qualities you need in people around you in order to show up as your very best?

I remember when I first decided to leave the security of a six-figure income and follow my dreams. My mother was dev-astated that I would give up a good pen-sion. Every phone call was me consol-ing her that everything would be OK. It was a sign of her love. And it didn’t help me succeed.

You need friends who believe in you and your dreams to be a contribution to the world. The challenge is that often it’s those closest to you that let their fear get in the way of supporting you. They don’t want you to get hurt or take risk, so they discourage you from putting yourself out there.

I love the Jennifer Hough quote “A friend is someone who learns the song in your heart and sings it to you when you’ve forgotten it.” It’s why I get so ex-cited when I know people like Jennifer Hough and Dr. Shawne Duperon will be involved in our Vista Mundo community in Costa Rica. They’re friends and fellow leaders who know the song in my heart.

When you choose to hang out with those who relate to you as your best self, it helps you stand in being your best self.

Do you have any daily rituals that support your health and wellness journey that you can share with us?I have quite a few rituals that carry me through the day. A daily walk. A yoga practice every morning. Eating a most-ly raw and fresh diet.

But I think my favorite ritual is my “one minute meditation.” Whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed I stop and clear my mind. I take a long deep inhale and a slow intentional exhale.

Then I ask my higher consciousness, “What next.” And whatever thought comes up for me I do that. It’s usually the thing that’s causing the stress and the overwhelm in the first place.

What’s one lesson you learned in life you would share with others and why?

Your dreams are scarier to you than they are to anyone else. It makes sense. They’re your dreams. That’s huge. Especially if your dream is to re-ally make a difference in the world and move beyond self-indulgent pleasures into Eudaimonia. That’s really huge.

But the reality is, there is no one on this earth better hard-wired to live your dreams than you. No one else will be as passionate or as committed.

So stop “just dreaming” and give your-self permission to take action on your dreams. Life is a whole lot sweeter on the other side.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Costa Rica.

Now that my daughters are both in Uni-versity I’m really enjoying chasing sum-mer. And Costa Rica has a spectacular climate built for indoor-outdoor living. So much of the year you’ll find me down there, running the EBC from my patio with the parrots and monkey’s calling in the background.

Vista Mundo really is a magical dream.

It has been over ten years since my mom’s sudden passing. I remember it like yesterday. I had feelings of fear and abandonment racing through my body. I had to stand in the pain of loss in order to overcome it. It was the realization that this is an inevitable experience. No one gets out alive, but how we deal with it and all the stresses of life is everything to our health and vitality. My father had a completely different experience with my mom’s passing. I was able to see how emotions truly cause physical pain. It started about one month after the funeral. My dad became extremely tired, almost lethargic. He started having episodes of fainting. As the emotions from the event compiled he became dizzy, lightheaded and withdrawn. He was shrugging it off by saying everything was alright and that he was fine. My father being a very stoic man never showed any emotions publicly at the passing of my mom. He was holding it all inside. My family was becoming more and more panicked that something was really wrong with dad now. About six weeks later my dad fainted again. My sister took him into the hospital where they said his AV and SA nodes (electrical junction boxes)

in his heart where misfiring and he needed a pacemaker. This was a sign of an emotionally broken heart. He had lost his girlfriend of over 40 years very suddenly. He held his emotions in and they created physical trauma to his heart circuits. There is no history of any heart related issues in his side of the family tree. Once the rhythms of his heart were restored he has had no other health related issues.

There is no separation of the mind-body connection. Emotions have a direct impact on the central nervous system instantaneously. Just think about a fresh lemon. You cut the lemon and it sprays a bit of juice on the counter. Now you pick up the lemon and hold it to your mouth. You squeeze the juice in your mouth and suck on the lemon. How many of you had to swallow right now? This is because the mere thought of the lemon and the reaction of your central nervous system causes an immediate physical response.

In order to understand how this happens we have to look at the central nervous system (CNS). The central nervous system is the master control system of every cell, tissue, organ and system within the body. It influences all hormones, muscles, emotions and all responses from our external worlds and creates internal responses. We have two main components within the CNS. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for protection. This is the fight or flight response. When danger appears, whether it is real or perceived as real, the body goes into fight mode. When this system is left on for prolonged periods of time it creates a short circuit in the communication system which leads to a physical signal that something is wrong. The other system is the parasympathetic nervous system. This system is responsible for calming the body. It helps set the stage for proper digestion, proper hormonal balance and a proper healing space for all the cells to be healthy. Research shows us that it is impossible to be in protection and healing at the same time. The systems switch back and forth when the environments that we create are stimulated. We unfortunately,

are surrounded by over stimulating experiences all day long, from dealing with our children to watching all the horrible events that are occurring all over the world. As I write this article, I took a call from a patient who stated that she woke up this morning with a severe pain in her neck and she couldn’t turn her head. When I inquired what happened she said “I didn’t do anything. I must have slept funny!” I always follow that statement with three questions. “Did you sleep in the same bed? Did you sleep on the same pillow? Did you sleep with the same partner?” She answered, “Yes, yes, and yes.” I replied, “Then you didn’t sleep funny.” Most likely she went to bed with a thousand things on her mind, which is very typical for a young mom who is always “on” with no time for herself. She had made up a story in her head about how things were supposed to be going at this time in her life. From managing her marriage, kids, and work, she has lost sight of who she really is. She was comparing what was currently going on with the made-up story. You can see where this is going, nowhere good. She had made up a scenario in her head that wasn’t necessarily true. It was true to her but not real. So, her physiology is responding in a sympathetic tone to a story, but her body does not know that it was in response to an emotional story. This was causing her pain. This worry causes her sympathetic nervous system to continue to run all night on overload. When she awoke in the morning, she was stiff and in pain from the muscles being tight. This is not the same as a pulled muscle or a blunt trauma from a fall or a hit, but a response to being emotionally drained. The firing of the CNS in fight mode leads us to exhaustion and adrenal fatigue leading us to multiple alarms in the forms of pain going off within our bodies. There are several books out that show the relationship of emotional stressors and the physical pains of a body. For example, if someone is having lower back pain it can be manifested from a struggling relationship with other people and/or your relationship with money issues. If someone is having pain in the feet or lower extremity it can be caused by issues in moving forward in life. The world will create experiences

for you to have, such as stumbling off a curb and twisting your ankle. Yes, there was a physical action of a sprain, but if you dig in a little on what is going on in their life, you may discover that they are in the middle of being laid off from a long career in a large company. They are constantly in fear with “where am I going to find another job? How am I going to provide for my family?” What can I do to help myself deal with these emotions?

“Feelings Buried Alive Never Die” is the title of a book written by Karol Kuhn Truman. I love that title because emotions were meant to be expressed not suppressed. We have to honor the fact that sometimes life is rough. We are going to have highs and we are going to have lows. The following are several action steps for you to take to help your body cope with emotional stresses. Simply saying to ‘stress less’ is quite impossible these days.

• Get adjusted by a trained chiropractor in neuro-emotional techniques. The adjustments help increase your adaptability to life’s stressors while removing the interferences along the spinal cord. WORRIED ABOUT CONSUMING TOO MUCH CANDY ON HALLOWEEN? BEWARE! IT’S ACTUALLY FOODS YOU EAT EVERYDAY THAT CAN BE LOADED WITH MORE SUGAR THAN THOSE SWEET HOLIDAY TREATS. Candy and sugary treats have been long associated with Halloween. Many parents worry about their children eating too much candy and what the increased sugar intake does to their little bodies. Though children tend to be the ones who eat the majority of the candy around Halloween, adults are known to have their share as well. We have all heard about the damage that too much sugar can cause to our bodies, but did you know that even the short-term increased sugar intake around Halloween can cause damage to your body? Researchers have found that an increase in sugar can wreak havoc on your body almost immediately.

SUGARWhere is it really

hiding?

SYMPTOMS OF INCREASEDSUGAR INTAKE INCLUDE: CongestionAnxiety Frequent coldsMigrainesConstipation HeadachesSinus congestionBackachesDepression Skin irritationSleepinessDizzinessImmune system dysfunctionTensionBlurred visionLoss of short term memory Studies have shown that increased sugar consumption is largely responsible for many cases of diabetes, heart and degenerative diseases. We know that chocolate bars, hard candies, gummy drops are loaded with sugar but often times there is hidden sugar in the foods and beverages we consume everyday. All these sugars add up. Many times we think we are being healthy but are then surprised by how much sugar our everyday foods contain. So we cannot blame Halloween alone for the overall increase in sugar consumption. Americans tend to eat over 120 pounds of refined sugars per year and that calculates to almost 25% of our caloric intake. Sugar calories are called empty calories because they provide no real food value and tend to steal essential nutrients from the body.

Here is a list of some of the sneaky everyday foods that pack the biggest sugar punch (Keep in mind our daily sugar intake should be limited to approximately 20 grams): Fruit yogurt – Fruit yogurt is one of the biggest surprises on the shelves. Many of the most popular brands on the shelves contain 19 grams of sugar or more. Many times people say that the yogurt tastes as good as dessert and that is because it really is as sweet as a dessert. Pasta sauce – Many store bought pasta sauces will have 12 grams of sugar for every half cup. Plus, many people add more than half cup of sauce to their pasta. And don’t forget that pasta itself is a High Glycemic food and therefore will spike insulin levels just like sugar, which means you will be increasing insulin levels significantly and quickly. Soda – We all know the health problems that soda can cause but this is just a reminder of how serious the problem is. Sweetened sodas have 29 grams per 8-ounce can. Some researchers have suggested one of the best things anyone can do for their health is to cut out soda, regular AND diet, all together from your diet. Granola bars – These snacks might make you feel like you are being healthy because of the added fiber but be careful with what else is included in these granola bars. Some bars can have up to 12 grams of sugar per serving. So make sure you check the labels and understand the ingredients before snacking.Manufactured foods account for

roughly 70% of our sugar intake. Breakfast cereals, snack foods, canned vegetables, pasta sauces and baby foods tend to be a huge source of refined sugars. Manufacturers call these refined sugars by differents names including fructose, corn sweeteners, and dextrose, just to name a few. These sweeteners no longer have any of the vitamins or minerals that the original sugar cane supplied. Refined sugars are missing the vita-mins, minerals, enzymes and fibers that are necessary for good health. This is why I suggest consuming fruits and whole grains that contain natural sugars and starches which include all the necessary vitamins, fiber and more. These whole foods break down slowly into glucose that find their way into the bloodstream through the small intestine. The body burns them smoothly and they can be used as needed. When the body is burdened with too many refined sugars, it searches for the proper nutri-ents elsewhere. The liver must release some of its stored vitamins, enzymes and minerals which stresses the body and causes a degenerative process. It is also interesting to note that when refined sugar is consumed the body responds as if the body has consumed “good” sugars. The brain prepares for the increase but refined sugar will be digested quickly causing the pancreas to still secrete insulin it is expecting. The glucose will have already been used which causes an immediate boost in energy but is followed quickly by a drop in energy. If you are looking to sweeten things up try natural sweeteners such as honey or Stevia.
