In the Glen | Spring 2007 | Glen Helen Ecology Institute College staff used the building when presidential interest waned. Various staff members lived and worked there until the building was deemed too far from campus. Birch Manor was also used for a short time by Universities Without Walls, an alternative edu- cation organiza- tion active in the 970s. The house gathered a bit of village atten- tion as a place of rumors. Many believed Birch’s wealth was evi- dence of mob connections, in particular with Al Capone who lived in Chicago while Birch did. The house’s widow walk fueled that rumor, and it became common to hear In the Glen Spring 2007 News and Activities of the Glen Helen Ecology Institute, Antioch College The House that Birch Built Continued on page Hidden at the south end of Glen Helen lies a remarkable building. Though today we know it by the name of Birch Manor, its original occupant called it simply Glen Helen House. This is its story. Hugh Taylor Birch, donor of Glen Helen, conceived the idea of a home in the Glen when he donated the land in his daughter’s honor in 929. It was constructed by the summer of 93 and Birch lived there sea- sonally until he died at the age of 94. Frequently described as dignified, the mansion was designed by architect William Shilling in the Georgian style noted for pro- portion, balance, and mathematical ratios. The brick used in the house was from a pow- der mill at Goes Station and certain rooms contain tulip tree paneling, the same tree species that Glen Helen now uses in its logo. The house was built with rooms, 9 baths, 8 fireplaces, a four-car garage, and servant’s quarters. Though infused with a classic el- egance, the structure was considered a place of modern convenience. A new gas furnace, its fuel pumped over a mile to the house, contributed to this reputation. Birch’s design was too large for a single man to live in alone. While Birch lived there, the quarters were occupied by Carmelo Ricciardi, Birch’s gardener, chauffeur, and by many accounts, friend. Together, Birch and Ricciardi cleared trails, built ponds, and generally restored Glen land after years of farming. One of the many rooms was desig- nated the Morgan room, and reportedly was always available for Birch’s friends, Antioch president Arthur Morgan and his wife Lucy. After Birch’s death, a succession of Antioch presidents lived in the house. Sam Gould was the first president to occupy the house. Later, President Dixon moved his family of eight there. To accommodate his sizable family, he had additional rooms added to the house, which had already been considered to be extravagantly large. The current layout contains 8 rooms.
