The requirements for Bowed Strings scales, arpeggios and sight-reading were updated in 2012, and we will not be changing them when the new syllabuses are released in 2015.

The covers for Scales and Arpeggios and Specimen Sight-Reading Tests for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass will be updated throughout 2015. The content will stay the same, so the current books will all still be valid.

and progressive’ studies, all with imaginative titles to encourage expressive playing. A ballade is a story in musical form.

Melody in the bass, requiring careful balance with the

treble; fast staccato chords; accurate even semiquavers; dramatic dynamics and articulation; playing with expressive contrasts.

To help develop expressive playing, imagine a story that this music can tell. Work out the musical

structure, using the key change in bar 31 to help. Practise the left-hand motif in bars 3 and 4 in different ways, for example, playing it with a dotted rhythm, or with an accent on the first of each of the semiquaver groups.

James Hook was a British composer from Norwich. A gavotte is a French

dance in moderate two-time.

Even quaver fingerwork; dynamic range including block

dynamics; slurs – couplet (two-note) and longer.

Recognizing musical patterns helps develop accurate playing. Spot the bars that are repeated, and those that

are slightly changed. Listen to and play bar 3 then bar 7, for example, and work out where the differences lie.

Beethoven composed the three sonatas of Op. 2 in around 1795, dedicating

them to his former teacher Haydn. This first movement is more texturally transparent than much of Beethoven’s later piano music.

Stylistic phrasing and articulation; strong, precise

fingerwork; sense of drama and high energy; sudden contrasts in dynamics.

Listen to various performances of this movement (as well as the rest of the sonata) in order to develop your

interpretation of the music. Try to identify the sonata form structure, noting also cadence points and types, modulations, and any unusual chords.

This is a piano arrangement of the finale of Haydn’s Symphony No. 89

in F. It is not known with certainty whether Haydn himself adapted the orchestral version to create this arrangement.

Stylistic phrasing, articulation and dynamics; even

semiquaver fingerwork, needing consistent fingering; precise playing of 3rds, 6ths and octaves.

Getting to know music in its original form can improve interpretation. Listen to a recording of an orchestra

playing the finale of Haydn’s Symphony No. 89. Work out which instruments are playing the melody, and whether they are playing it legato or staccato (or both). Try to describe the structure of the music.
