The Dubuque Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) is a volunteer organization for women. We are united for apostolic action at the request of the Archbishop of Dubuque. We are affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) and the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO). We are a voice for the women of the Dubuque Archdiocese to speak and act as a unit on matters of mutual interest.

Partners in Mission

Florine Swanson, ACCW President

“Partners in Mission” was the terminology Archbishop Jackels used to define the work of ACCW with the Archdiocese. In all good partnerships there is a sharing. In the last issue of The Link, I wrote about the numerous ways ACCW works collaboratively to support the goals of the Archbishop.

In our partnership we are also the beneficiary of the Archbishop and the staff of our Archdiocese. Each year on the Sunday closest to the feast day of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Archbishop writes a letter in the Witness to the women of the Archdiocese asking for them to contribute to the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. This year it appeared in the April 27th issue.

We are also blessed to have the Archbishop say Mass at the Annual Convention of ACCW as well as the Beauty in Christ Conference. This year’s Convention will take place at Elizabeth Ann Seton in Hiawatha on October 12.

The Beauty in Christ Conference is truly a collaborative effort of staff and volunteers working together. In the first three years ACCW has provided $7000 in financial support as well as volunteers on the committee. But the key leadership continues to come from the Archdiocesan staff. Mark your calendar for January 25, 2020 at the Double Tree Hotel in Cedar Rapids for the 4th Annual Conference.

Three years ago the Archdiocese permitted The Link, ACCW’s quarterly newsletter, to be designed and printed at the Archdiocesan Center. We are fortunate to continue to have staff doing the layout, graphic design work, printing and mailing of the quarterly publication. The cost of the printing and postage is paid for by ACCW.

The Archdiocesan Center also serves as the archives for ACCW. If you know of scrap books and other meaningful materials and minutes from ACCW Deaneries, particularly those that no longer exist and have combined with other deaneries, please let myself

or other members of the board know so they can be added to the archives.

This year we also received permission to add a display case for ACCW to the Archdiocesan Center that will be donated by Alma Meyer our past president and current Province Director.

Thank you to Archbishop Jackels and the staff at the Archdiocesan Center in Dubuque for truly being partners in the mission of the Catholic Church.

A friend and I joined the local Days for Girls Cedar Rapids Chapter at their sew-in They meet twice a month. A few others of us plan to meet regularly to sew together some of the items that will go to them. Another gal joined them for 2 sew-ins. Together we organized a sew-in of the cloth bags at her house. Tentatively, some of us will meet monthly for more sewing.

Days for Girls International is a nonprofit organization founded in 2014. If you are interested in this service project, check them out on Facebook. Before receiving the hygiene kits, women and girls were kept in their room for days. No school for days. No income for days. We are changing that! Days for Girls provides sustainable and effective feminine hygiene solutions to girls and women worldwide. Because no woman should go without. Washable feminine hygiene kits are distributed to girls and women in need. Feminine hygiene education is provided for the girls and women receiving kits.

As you celebrated the civic events on Memorial Day, hopefully you didn’t forget to remember those who are so dear to us and did so much for us during our lives. I extend to you Mothers and Fathers the following blessing:

“For all Mothers and Fathers who have given us life and love, I extend my prayers to you, for you and over you. O God, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these Mothers and Fathers, may they be strengthened as Christian parents. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their children, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. May Almighty God bless you all, the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen”

God has blessed you as a Mother or a Father with children, might you in turn thank God for that gift of being a parent.

As you celebrate the civic events on Memorial Day don’t forget to take your family to your parish cemetery, the public cemetery or where your relatives are buried and clean the stone and say a prayer. Explain to your children who these people are for whom you are praying. This is also a good time to explain the Church’s teachings about life, death and a proper burial. It is also a good time to explain to them the custom of offering a Mass stipend for the deceased. If you notice that your neighbor’s stone is a bit dirty, you could clean it as well.

All these celebrations enable families to grow in trust, responsibility and love.

Keep in mind that it was a woman, Mary of Magdala, after the death and resurrection of Jesus who was the first one to go out and spread the good news when she went to the tomb and found it empty. The Lord then spoke to her and she then went and told the Apostles. (John 20: 11-18).

Our organization is important. It is a way for women to connect with and support one another. Let’s focus on growing our organization by being holy women sharing our faith by our actions. Then we can truly be women of faith with a deep relationship with the Lord and women of action – the best kind witnesses of Christ.

Fr. Dan Knipper

Spiritual Advisor

Joanne Pohland

Our fundamental mission in the world is to make God known. Nothing ought to distract us from that fundamental calling. We have to be single minded in this endeavor. We are to be the salt of the earth – the light of the world. Our task is to show the world what it means to be human. For we believe that Christ reveals man to himself.

The command to make God known is not new. In Deuteronomy 6:4-8 the Israelites were called to teach their children at home and abroad whether they were busy or at rest. At the end of Mathew’s gospel Jesus gives us the explicit command to go out to all nations and proclaim the Good News.

The mission of the Church is crystal clear and Pope Benedict put it clearly – “to make God known.”

St. Paul says in Romans “But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach if they have not been sent?” (Rom. 10:14-15.)

It is the duty of the Church to make God known and present. We are the Church and we have the command from Christ to spread his word.

In the 1976 document Apostolic Exhortation Pope Paul VI writes that it is by the lives we live that we give the overriding witness to the presence of God. Through the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, we have the opportunity to give witness to the presence of God. As we strive to live holy lives, we grow in holiness, and our lives of holiness can evangelize those we encounter.

In baptism, we are called to reach out and to always try to share the faith. Words are important... It is true that Evangelize is still a word that many of us recoil upon hearing. Yet it is a word that we need to sear into our minds. We must be evangelizers in what we say and do.

ACCW is poised to be a powerful force in evangelizing the world. ACCW is about being women in love with the Church.

Sheila Rassman – Immediate past president

Exploring the meaning of missionary and how that calling applies to our lives is important in our world today. The word missionary might bring to mind pictures of devout religious persons working in foreign lands, converting the natives to their particular sect and instructing and assisting them in every practical way. Although there are those who are called to devote their entire lives enthusiastically to this type of missionary work, not everyone can leave her or his position for parts unknown … health, aptitude and responsibilities interfere. We must be missionaries and bring the words, “Go and teach all nations,” to those surrounding us. We teach by words, but more importantly, we teach by actions. Preaching doesn’t just happen during the homily at Mass on Sunday. St. Francis said, “Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words.” Jesus’ message is simple and clear … “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Consistently leading a good life is a mission in itself. Besides writing out a check to a favorite charity, one could ask the cashier in the grocery store has she worked all day, when her shift ends, or complement a total stranger with, “You look amazing!” … or to a weary mother who is shopping with her young children, “You have a beautiful family.” Everything that spreads true joy is worthy of a missionary. Seemingly small acts of kindness and consideration enable us all to join the Body of Christ. There is need all around us, calling us to get involved, to move out of our comfort zone. Anything positive causing joy and peace is missionary work. Never underestimate people’s gratitude for kindness. By giving and receiving kindness, we are twice blessed. As the Council of Catholic Women, we need to be evangelizers, spreading the good news and making our presence known.

“Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which He looks with compassion on the world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, Yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes. You are His body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”- St. Teresa of Avila

Inspired by the Spirit ParliamentarianRozena McVey - Dubuque ACCW Parliamentarian

What is the difference between bylaws and standing rules (also known as standard operating procedures)? Bylaws define the structure of an organization and are not easily changed. In some organizations, all members must be notified of a change in writing at least one month before the change is voted by the membership. Our Dubuque ACCW Bylaws state: Proposed Amendment or Amendments shall be submitted to the Dubuque ACCW Board of Directors for consideration before presentation to the Dubuque ACCW Convention. Such Amendment or Amendments shall be submitted before the Third Quarterly Meeting of the Dubuque ACCW Convention. These Bylaws may be amended at the Dubuque ACCW Convention by two thirds vote of the Dubuque ACCW delegates present and voting, provided notice of the proposed amendment or amendments is attached to the call for the Dubuque ACCW Convention. So as you can see, bylaws are not easily changed.

Whereas, Standing Rules (standard operating procedures) can be changed or amended more easily. Our Dubuque ACCW Standing Operating Procedures can be amended at quarterly board meeting by majority vote of those board members present with notice being given two weeks in advance. One of our Dubuque ACCW SOP’s requires officers to present a written report of her year’s work by August 1 for publication in the Dubuque ACCW convention book. If our ACCW convention date was scheduled for early September, that August 1 date might need to be changed to an earlier date.

Every organization needs bylaws and it is helpful to have standing rules. They are very helpful in maintaining fairness and consistency. Do you have customs that should be recorded as standing rules for guidelines for new officers and members?

Alma Meyer – Province Director

• A “Province” is a basic form of ecclesiastical jurisdiction that includes several dioceses, one of them being the archdiocese headed by the metropolitan see bishop, the Archbishop, the head of the Province. The boundaries typically can be one state or combination of several states. There are some exceptions to this for California and Texas have two archdioceses and provinces within their states; Los Angeles & San Francisco, and Galveston-Houston & San Antonio. Maryland is unique in its composition of counties in two dioceses; plus there is a Province of the Military Archdiocese, (MCCW), Military Council of Catholic Women.

• The structure of the NCCW Board representation aligns with the Province model, plus serving with the NCCW Officers and staff.

• I have been fortunate to serve with outstanding PROVINCE DIRECTORS (PD’s) from the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Anchorage, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, Dubuque, Galveston-Houston, Hartford, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Louisville, Miami, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Philadelphia, Portland, St. Louis, St Paul & Mpls, San Antonio, San Francisco, Washington, and the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.

• The DUBUQUE PROVINCE encompasses the four dioceses of the State of Iowa. These are Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City and the Archdiocese of Dubuque. One of my PD role for the NCCW is to be a liaison to Davenport Bishop Thomas Zinkula, Des Moines Bishop Richard Pates, Sioux City Bishop Walker Nickless, and Archbishop Michael Jackels. The current CCW Diocese Spiritual Advisors for Dubuque Province are Rev. Joel McNeil from Dunlap, Dubuque ACCW Rev. Dan Knipper of Decorah, and Sioux City Diocese Rev Jim Tigges from Fort Dodge.

• Those currently serving on the Dubuque Province CCW Board are: Davenport-Susan Stein from Donnellson, Des Moines Diocese Co- Presidents Connie Sampers from Red Oak & Carolyn Smith

Province Directorfrom Glenwood, Immediate Past PD & Sioux City Past President Mary Ann Ruether from LeMars, and Dubuque ACCW President Florine Swanson from Galt & President-elect Joanne Pohland from Peosta. At the recent Province Board meeting at Storm Lake, Past Des Moines Diocese CCW President Nancy Larson of Shenandoah was announced to be my predecessor and will be installed as the next Dubuque Province Director at the Atlanta NCCW Convention in August. • The NCCW Province Director position is a two- year term, and is rotated among the four dioceses of Iowa.

• Of the 25 Dubuque Province NCCW Directors since 1962, the following ACCW members have been from the Dubuque Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women: +Betty Berrie of Mason City/Dubuque, (1965-69, & 1977-79), Dorothy Montag of Nora Springs (1985-87), Fran Fahey of Waukon (1993-95), Sherry Nilles of Ashton (1997-99) and current CDA National Regent-elect from Sheldon, Betty Humpal of Sumner (2001-03), Edna Brunkhorst of Waverly (2009-11), and Alma Meyer of Calmar/Marion (2017-19).

• The NCCW Board meets twice a year in Washington, DC at the Washington Retreat House over a long weekend in January and June, and again pre & post NCCW Conventions; (2017-Dallas, 2018-Pittsburgh, 2019-Atlanta). In the interim, business is conducted electronically, and per nccw.org website, plus there are monthly commission, member, committee, rosary, and nationwide conference calls.

• In addition to the aforementioned Province legacy persons, the following are acknowledged for their services last year- past Dubuque ACCW President Sheila Rassman from Protivin and Sioux City President Robin Corzilius from Cherokee. Also the home Diocese of the current PD per Province Bylaws provide the services of secretary Florine Swanson, treasurer Mary Esther Pullin of Waterloo, parliamentarian Rozena McVey from Walker. My sincere appreciation to them and the entire Dubuque ACCW Board for their support and cooperation. It has been an honor and faith-filled experience that I’ll always treasure to represent Iowa Catholic Women these past two years, leading into the NCCW centennial year in 2020.

DEANERY DOINGSDecorah Deanery Teri Rosendahl, President

The Holy Trinity Catholic Council of Women hosted the April 25 Decorah Deanery meeting providing the speaker and lunch.

Pictured from left to right are speaker Mariana Vega, president Teri Rosendahl, and Vice president Sheila Rassman.

Mariana Vega is a support person for victims of human trafficking in a three- county area. Mariana presented information to the members and answered many questions. We were amazed at what she does to help those affected by human trafficking and did not know she is headquartered in Decorah. She works as a specialist for Friends of the Family. For more info [email protected]. Office 319-352-1108 ext-500.

The Deanery is asking women to save rosaries, holy cards, and all those little prayer booklets you get free from donations as we will be making Catholic Survival Kits this summer. Thank you to all who do the labor of love!

Marshalltown Deanery Monica Fulton, President

St. Michael in Belle Plaine hosted the April 4, 2019 meeting. Fr. Michael Mescher presided at Mass to begin the day.

Highlight of business meeting was presentation by treasurer Jean Miller of list of contributions and fees due by July 31, 2019. These are: Help a

Child donation of $5 per parish, ACCW/NCCW dues of $5 per lady in the parish, and new this year, $1 per dues paying member for Deanery treasury, so we can continue to support our priests.

We signed cards for priests celebrating birthdays during May, June, and July. As an additional way to remember our Deanery priests, a card will be sent to each on the anniversary of his ordination.

Archbishop Jackels installs Rev. Dennis Miller as pastor of St. Joseph in Bellevue. He also serves SS. Peter and Paul in Springbrook. Fr. Dennis was born and raised in Marshalltown and is one of the priests we support with birthday, Christmas and Easter cards and prayer.

Denise Fletcher, parishioner at St. Patrick’s, Tama, has visited a number of foreign countries. She entertained the ladies with a program about her most recent trip, to Morocco. In this country where 99% of the people are Muslim, she toured a huge mosque. There are a few Catholic churches.

Before the meeting adjourned, we prayed the Emmaus Prayer for priests, the Vocation Prayer, and the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for seminarians and religious.

Around the Deanery—

2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the Catholic community in Marshalltown. The first weekend in March, both churches showed a power point with pictures from the old days up to the present time. The big event was on Sunday, June 30, an outdoor Mass followed by a picnic.
