Mrs. Finch / Mrs. HetheringtonShoe Sharing was a Success! There were some very traveled, sporty, and active feet inside those shoes.

Responsible Recipients for Pride Recognition were nominated by classmates and verified by teachers. Congratulations to the following students:

Larry the Leprechaun hides each day and turns into a statue whenever he’s spotted by humans. Once students find him, they secretly write a sentence that describes where he is hiding using as many prepositional phrases as they can. Three slips are chosen each day and if it is accurate, neat and has at least 2 prepositions and their signature is in correct cursive, they can win a prize.

Dates to Remember:March 7 – Conversation with Mrs. Graff, Library 8:15 – 9 AMMarch 10 – Bingo Inglemoor Cafeteria 6 – 8 PM March 13 – Zoo Animal Choice Paper due March 15 – Science Extravaganza 4 – 8 PM March 17 – Next Spelling testMarch 20 – Relative Sharing Begins March 21 – Pta General Membership Meeting, 7 PM Library March 27 – 5th Grade to Camp March 31 – Spirit Day - Silly Socks

Got a Minute: Reading – I can work on fluency in my reading by thinking about how it should sound. I can scoop up words into phrases. Writing – I can persuade my teachers about a topic that is important to me. Pride Pillars – I can be Responsible. Math – I can solve word problems.Jack is our Super Star this week. Curriculum News: March 6 - 10In Language: We used the Ugly Duckling, Big Al, and Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late to help make inferences then make predictions. We used clues from the story and our background knowledge to infer what the author didn’t come right out and state, then predicted at various places where we stopped to think. We are working on being fluent in our reading by scooping up words into phrases and paying close attention to punctuation.

In spelling & writing: Next spelling test will be on March 17. Help your student to know the spelling rule or feature and how to spell words. Remember 5 words are chosen that they have not seen to check to see if they are transferring what they know to words with similar spelling patterns. One activity that you can do to help study for spelling is to take a magazine or newspaper and look for their words or words that follow the same pattern.

We continue to persuade readers with our strong statements and words. We are using dialogue tags to determine how something should be read in both reading and writing.

Cursive Writing: Exciting times for kids who are wanting to read and write in cursive.

In : This week we will begin looking at word problems and solving 2digit addition and subtraction word problems. Please be helping your child at home with the word problem homework by checking their answers and sometimes reading them the word problems.

Continued practice memorizing the math facts is a daily task for us. We are either taking timed tests or practicing the flash cards or games that incorporate using basic facts. We appreciate your work at home with these facts.

Art: We mixed primary colors to make secondary colors and ended up with a color wheel umbrella painting. Super fitting with all the rain we have been having. We also made a cute Cat in the Hat in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Sharing This month’s sharing will go along with our study of ancestors. Help your student to choose a relative who would be willing to answer some questions either over the phone or through email. A list of questions will come home to help guide the discussion. Your child will need to prepare to talk about the answers, who the person is that is being interviewed and an artifact from the relative’s past.

Science The next science unit is Air and Weather. Students will be learning that air is matter and takes up space. They will investigate air's properties while engaging in science inquiry based on specific experiments. Students will capture air with the use of vials and basins of water, determining which portion is air and which is not. They will have an opportunity to challenge their knowledge of air by trying to submerge a

paper towel in water with the intent of keeping it dry. Observation, discussion and individual science journals will house their learning throughout the 3 week session.

Social Studies We’ve filled out a KWL chart on Bothell. Children know a lot about current day Bothell, but not much on the history. By the end of our unit, children will be experts on Bothell’s founding fathers and mothers. Look for DID YOU EVER? Interviews coming home soon. Have 3 generations fill out if possible.

Activity Stations: Our next rotation of 6 stations will work on learning about 3 types of communities, Bothell’s history with a focus on the founding fathers and transportation. Children will create a family crest and will use their mapping skills to locate Bothell and the neighboring cities in a cooperative group activity. Students will also get a chance to decide what types of businesses are needed in a new town.

2nd Grade Rotation: We are learning how to take notes from a website on a topic. We understand what it means to plagiarize and how we need to cite our work.

ResearchEvery student will get a chance to do an in-depth study of a zoo animal. Our field trip finale in June will be to go to the Woodland Park Zoo to see it. We will be encouraging everyone to choose an animal that is listed on the zoo website. Go to this website and click on an animal family. You will want to choose an animal that is listed under the “Animal Fact Sheet” drop down menu. http://www.zoo.org/page.aspx?pid=1735 We will also visit the Pebblego.com site and find facts on our animal so that we can compare and contrast two sources for information.

Parent Corner Here is the site where you can check what each content area includes on the report card. I’ve included the web address and the Health and Fitness EARLs and ways that you can help at home in this area. Check out the website for suggestions for math, reading, writing etc.
