25 YEARS OF SUMMER FUN

A Letter from the Recreation Director

Dear Friends,

Once upon a time, 25 years ago, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department was located at Alhambra Hall, with no gym and no pool. In looking over the land, many wanted a bigger and better facility and wished that something could be done. With the help of the fairy godmother and others, their wish was granted! Everyone in the town came together to help build a brand new recreation facility with an indoor pool and a new gym – the R.L. Jones Center.

The R.L. Jones Center has provided a place for 25 years of summer fun and excitement for children of all ages, even Mommy, Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa! That’s why this year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the R.L. Jones Center, which ignited the growth of many more recreation facilities and activities for our community.

You are reading the first edition of the official Mount Pleasant Recreation Magazine, IN MOTION.

It’s our goal to keep Mount Pleasant residents active and bring an IN MOTION mind-set to the people of Mount Pleasant that will endure for generations.

IN MOTION brings a powerful message, an inspiring movement and a fresh, new look to show you the multitude of programs and athletics brought to you by your Mount Pleasant Recreation Department.

Whether you participate in our programs or use a facility in your free time, be a part of the IN MOTION movement as we bring in the next 25 years of recreation programs here at the R.L. Jones Center and other locations around town. If you stop by and visit us, you’ll see why we bring a smile to many and help you create memories for a lifetime!

With respect and gratitude,

Ken AyoubRecreation DirectorTown of Mount Pleasant

A swimmer glides purposefully across the water, strong, repetitive strokes propelling her from one end of the pool to the other.

A golfer nails a nine iron, turf flying up from the ground as the small, dimpled ball starts its trajectory toward a soft landing on a manicured green.

A young ballet dancer stretches the arches of her feet as high as they can possibly go, reaching for the sky and moving gracefully to the soothing sounds of the accompanying music.

These stories have one thing in common. They represent an important goal of the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department: to keep the community “in motion.”

“Through recreation, a person, community or country can be steered in motion – in a positive, healthy and active direction,” said Recreation Marketing/PR Coordinator Cori Pavlicko, as she explained why “In Motion” is the new movement in Mount

Pleasant. “We believe that by creating facilities and programs that promote active lifestyles, minds and doors will be opened for the people of Mount Pleasant.”

The Recreation Department is a great place to learn, compete and generally have fun by participating in sports ranging from soccer to football to baseball to swimming and just about everything in between. But the Rec Department also offers a wide range of other activities that stimulate the mind and body and keep area residents “in motion.” Possibilities include music, ballet, fishing, crabbing, gymnastics, cheerleading and much more. There’s fun for the young and for the young at heart as well. Adults can stay active with yoga, tai chi, paddle boarding and boating classes and so much more.

With a wealth of indoor and outdoor activities, kids and grownups alike can enjoy all the Recreation Department has to offer year round and throughout the town, from the Woods-Flowers Soccer Complex on Patriots Point Boulevard, to the Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Senior Services Center on Von Kolnitz Road and to the G.M. Darby Building in the beautiful Old Village.

Pavlicko imagines a community IN MOTION and envisions bringing a mind-set that will endure for generations to the people of Mount Pleasant.

“There’s a place at Mount Pleasant Recreation for everyone, and we all have one thing in common.”

We love to move.

We are IN MOTION.

Kaden Hack might be well on his way to attaining his dream of someday pitching off of a Major League mound, but he’s unlikely to forget the lessons he learned about life and baseball during the time he spent in the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s baseball program.

Kaden, the son of Bob and Lisa Hack of Mount Pleasant, recently signed a letter of intent to pitch for South Georgia State College. Currently in his senior year at Wando High School, he’ll head for Douglas, Georgia, this fall, taking the next step toward his goal of toeing the rubber in Sun Trust Park, Citizens Bank Park or some other Big League venue. Regardless of where his journey takes him, he has fond memories of the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, where he played from the age of 10 until his freshman year at Wando.

“The Rec Department shaped me. It made me the player and the person I am, on and off the field,” said Kaden, a left-handed pitcher.

Intent on paying his good fortune forward, Kaden still volunteers his time with the Rec Department, helping to coach younger players who also have aspirations of playing high school baseball and beyond.

“I’ve learned to grow as a coach. I’ve learned from coaches I’ve played for and against, how to be a better player, and to treat the game of baseball with respect,” he said.

Kaden is not the only coach in his family. Bob Hack has been coaching in the Mount Pleasant Recreation League since 2008, and, for the past two seasons, has helped out with the Moultrie Middle School team. He had nothing but good things to say about the program that helped shape his son’s future.

“For the size and number of kids, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department does a really good job,” he commented. “There are lots of good coaches in the league, and Ryan Johnson does a good job of organizing things.”

Johnson, who coordinates the Department’s baseball program, knows how much work Kaden put in to earn a spot on a college roster.

“Kaden is definitely a special player to me,” he said. “He is a prime example that hard work pays off. His face just lights up when he talks to me about playing college ball and pitching this season with Wando. These are the stories I love and make what I do worthwhile.”

With a boost from the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, Kaden Hack has taken one giant step forward toward Major League stardom. He doesn’t intend to give up the dream any time soon.

“I’m going to keep playing until they tell me I have to stop,” he said.

Nikki DeWitte, the 15-year-old daughter of Natasha and Jon DeWitte of Mount Pleasant, was one of two golfers representing the state of South Carolina. All costs except her airfare were covered by China’s Special Olympics program, according to Shelli Davis, who serves as the Recreation Department’s FUNdamentals/Therapeutic Recreation coordinator.

Davis helped raise funds to pay for airfare for Nikki, partially with a Web page and also through the program’s annual fundraiser at Patriots Point during Veterans Day weekend each year.

Davis pointed out that Nikki was the first Mount Pleasant resident to compete in the Special Olympics Golf Masters, which was established in 2012.

“Originally, five athletes and two coaches were going to go to China, but we ended up with seven golfers and three coaches,” Davis said.

Activities were slated to get underway April 24 and last through April 30. In addition to the golf competition, participants, coaches and family members had the opportunity to listen to presentations from experts on a wide range of subjects, including “Social Inclusion and Education Through Sport,” “How Art Can Overcome Communication Barriers” and “The Challenges of Inclusion.”

They also had the chance to attend workshops on coaching; teaching; music; art; physical education; crafts; dance and motion; and healthy lifestyles, among other subjects.

Davis said Nikki, a student at Wando High School, has been golfing for almost six of her 15 years. In addition to golf, she swims and plays soccer, basketball and kickball at the R.L. Jones Center on Egypt Road. The golfers hone their skills on the course at Patriots Point Links in Mount Pleasant. Davis said there are usually around 15 people in the Unified Golf Program, during a competitive season that runs from August through November.

“The people at Patriots Point have been great,” she commented. “They’ve really helped us out, and we appreciate it. Patriots Point Links has played a significant role in the overall success of this program, helping our athletes take advantage of many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.”

Davis pointed out that participants in Mount Pleasant’s Therapeutic Recreation Program, golfers and those who prefer other sports, compete both in South Carolina and nationally each year. For instance, they have joined golfers from 13 other states and Canada in tournaments as far away as Florida, Arizona and New Jersey. Later this year, Davis expects to take seven golfers to Port St. Lucie, Florida, to face off against national competition.

Nikki DeWitte, meanwhile, has paved the way for other local athletes to spread the word around the world about the Lowcountry and the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department.

A SPECIAL GOLFER

FromMount Pleasant to China

Only seven American golfers were scheduled to compete in the Special Olympics

Golf Masters in Macau, China in April 2016, and one of them is a participant in

the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s Unified Golf Program.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATIONTherapeutic Recreation is born from the idea that all members of the community, regardless of their level of ability, have the

right to leisure. Our goal is to remove the barriers that may keep some people from participating in recreational activities. Through

recreation, participants have the opportunity to become more active, learn a new sport and improve social skills, all the while

making new friends! Unified Sports brings youth and adults with and without disabilities together on a team. Smaller fields and

modified equipment may be used to ensure fairness and safety for all.

Volunteers are needed for all sports! Contact Shelli Davis at 843-884-2528 or email [email protected] for more information.

The Senior part of the name of the Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Senior Services Center in Mount Pleasant might be a little bit misleading. After all, the Center is not a place where seniors who have nothing else to do sit around playing board games and talking about the good old days.

Instead, members enjoy a wide range of activities at the Center, which was built in 2008 and doubled in size to 15,000 square feet five years later. Town officials were pleasantly surprised by just how popular the Senior Center would become.

The Center offers an average of more than 100 classes a week, and the workout room, which is a beehive of activity throughout the day, has virtually every type of exercise machine available. The building also houses an aerobics room, a café, a prep kitchen, a screened porch, a card room, classrooms, an arts and crafts room – and even a serenity garden.

Approximately 650 people visit the Senior Center every day, taking advantage of an array of classes aimed at keeping their bodies fit and their minds alert. Exercise classes include Zumba, strength training, Pilates, tai chi, yoga, balance and Row-bics. Members also can be found enjoying basketball, pickle ball, pingpong and billiards, and social events such as coffees, potluck lunches and health and wellness seminars also are popular.

Many members take advantage of the opportunity to take painting – watercolor, oil acrylics – and drawing classes, while others learn to dance or look forward to taking trips with their

fellow members, both local and out-of-town excursions.Charleston County residents pay only $125 per year to

belong to the Senior Center, while non-county residents are charged $250.

The Senior Center, located on Von Kolnitz Road, has even served as a somewhat of a recruiting tool for the town, according to Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, the former Mount Pleasant Town Council member who worked tirelessly to assure that the Center would be built.

“I’ve known people who have made a trip to Mount Pleasant, toured the facilities and moved here because of our Senior Center and the services it provides,” Stokes-Marshall commented during an interview with Mount Pleasant Magazine.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers are teaming up with the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department to help young people in our community develop their knowledge and skills. Behind every child’s success story, there is a parent, mentor, friend or volunteer. As a Recreation Volunteer, you can share your skills and experience to help transform a new generation of confident, creative, young leaders in our Mount Pleasant community.

HOW TO VOLUNTEERWe’ll help you find volunteer opportunities that match your skills and experience! Call (843) 884-2528 for more information.

As a youngster, Orlando Sutton played baseball on a diamond carved out of a North Carolina turkey farm. Today, he participates in the game he loves on the well-manicured fields of the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department.

As the Rec Department’s chief umpire, he still gets to enjoy the game that captured his fancy back when he wiled away his time on his own personal field of dreams. He started calling balls and strikes in 1993, when he lived in Michigan, and he’s been the man behind the mask in Mount Pleasant since 2010.

“I like umpiring, and it keeps me close to the game,” said Sutton, who calls baseball as well as slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball in all age groups, from 8-year-olds all the way up to the adult leagues.

Sutton grew up in the tiny town of Seven Springs, North Carolina, which in 2013 had a population of only 112. He said the kids who play in Mount Pleasant are very fortunate to have the opportunity to compete on the town’s top-notch facilities.

He added that in addition to his reverence for the game, he umpires because it gives him the chance to have a positive impact on the lives of Mount Pleasant’s youngsters.

“I know I’ve made an impact on some kids because some will tell me I was the best umpire they ever had. Just that compliment is worth all the effort,” he said.

Sutton pointed out that umpires can make a difference simply by encouraging youngsters to make the most of their God-given ability, as a player or even as an umpire.

Twenty-five years after it opened its doors to the citizens of Mount Pleasant, the R.L. Jones Center has been given a facelift that will enhance its standing as a top-notch recreation facility.

The renovated, 25-yard indoor heated pool at the town’s recreation facility on Egypt Road reopened in January 2016. Aquatic Recreation Specialist Lauren Meyer is confident that updating the pool will go a long way toward helping the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department achieve its goal of providing the residents of Mount Pleasant with an array of options to fill their recreational needs.

“Every new facility renovation helps to strengthen the quality of life for our community, allowing us to positively impact our residents’ lives by helping them stay active and fit,” she commented.

The renovations were certainly worth the inconvenience of having to shut the pool down for a while, according to Mount Pleasant Recreation Director Ken Ayoub. He pointed out that he appreciates the community’s patience while the pool was closed.

“While we are very pleased that the work was done in the established time frame, we are very grateful and appreciative of the patience and understanding that our many uses of the pool exhibited during the renovation,” Ayoub commented.

The Recreation Department is celebrating the completion of the pool renovations in 2016, but, just as important, it is also marking the Jones Center’s 25th birthday. A celebration of its 25 years in existence was held March 19.

To find out more about aquatics programs at either of the town’s pools – at the R.L. Jones Center or the Park West location – contact Aquatics Coordinator Jeff Garrard at [email protected].
