MEN’S CLUB ANNUAL SPORTS BREAKFAST

Guest Speaker: Eric LeGrand Sportscaster ▪ Author ▪ ESPY Award Recipient

Former Rutgers Football Defensive Tackle A Source of Inspiration

Sunday, January 25 Breakfast @ 9:00 AM

Guest Speaker Eric Legrand @ 10:00 AM

Adult: $18 or Family: $36 (children must be accompanied by an adult). A delicious hot & cold breakfast buffet prepared by Men’s Club members

RSVP online or call 973.994.2290

Eric LeGrand is a source of inspiration and perseverance for so many. A standout high school football player

from New Jersey, Eric Legrand went on to play for Rutgers University and by his sophomore year he led the

team with 13 tackles on kickoff coverage and recorded a tackle-for-loss in seven games. But after a severe spi-

nal injury (from an intense collision during a game at MetLife Stadium), which dramatically changed his life,

LeGrand found himself wondering if he’d ever recapture that kind of success on the field.

Through triumph and tragedy, Eric’s road to recovery has been less than effortless. Having undergone a nine-

hour emergency surgery procedure to stabilize his spine as well as a rigorous rehabilitation process, he has

regained movement in his shoulders and sensation throughout his body. With that, he resumed his college

classes via Skype and graduated from Rutgers University (2014) with a degree in Labor Relations. Not only did

he graduate with honors, but he also gave a commemorative speech during the commencement ceremony. He

has recently launched his sports broadcasting career as an analyst for Rutgers Football Radio Network.

With courage and grace, Eric has been honored with a plethora of awards and accolades throughout his recov-

ery process, which include the “Unsung Hero Award” (2012) presented by the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the

“Jimmy V Award” for Perseverance at the 20th Annual ESPYs (2012), and being elected as the “Most Influential

Person in New Jersey Sports” presented by the Star Ledger (2012). On September 14, 2013, Rutgers hosted a

ceremony, which retired the No. 52 jersey that belonged to Eric. Eric’s jersey was the first number to be re-

tired by Rutgers in the history of their program.

In awe of the unwavering support, Eric’s story continues to touch numerous lives. Eric released his first book in

the fall of 2012, titled BELIEVE: My Faith And The Tackle That Changed my Life (HarperCollins Publishers). He

also signed an official NFL contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (by his former Rutgers coach, Greg Schi-

ano). Eric quickly became an advocate for individuals that are affected with spinal cord injuries and disorders.

Fueled with passion, LeGrand decided to form Team LeGrand of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Es-

tablished in 2013, the proceeds generated from the charity go toward research to find a cure for paralysis and

help to improve the quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries.

Thursday, January 8, 2015, 7:30 PM The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Milan Kundera

Taking place in Czechoslovakia just after the Velvet Revolution, The Book relates stories of interrelated characters, mostly as straightforward fiction, often as formal correspondence or in oth-er literary forms. Often, as the title might suggest, funny in a laugh out loud way, Kundera explores the nature of forgetting, surely a relevant theme in a country which had just failed to free itself from the Iron Curtain. Neither Judaism nor Jewish life play a meaningful role in the book, but a consideration of Kundera's beliefs as seen through Jewish eyes is more than merely interest-ing.

Thursday, March 5, 2015, 7:30 PM A Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn Only someone with Dara Horn's knowledge of Jewish history and tradition could have written as unexpected a novel. Computer sci-entist Josie Ashkenazi travels to Egypt to consult on computer analyses of ancient manuscripts, and is kidnapped there. We move on to Solomon Schechter, whose discovery of the Cairo ge-niza a century earlier brought to light the world's largest and most important undocumented collection of ancient Jewish texts. Ashkenazi and Schechter’s stories, and their overlay, rein-force the importance of the text in Jewish life, as well as demon-strating that the power of the written word can be quite frighten-ing indeed.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING 2015

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin History Through Text is a seminar to be offered throughout the year, taught by Rabbi Kulwin. Taught in blocks, each class will also be a stand-alone unit, so that an inabil-ity to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an en-joyable and simulating learning experience. Tuesday, January 6, 7:00 PM: From British Partition to a Jewish State Tuesday, January 27, 7:00 PM: Topic to be announced

Dying, Death and Mourning: What a Jew believes and what a Jew does with Rabbi Clifford Kulwin We will review Judaism’s end of life traditions in an effort to become familiar with the rituals and beliefs and understand some of the psy-chological insights behind them. We will also look at the bureaucratic aspects of dying; the roles played by funerals homes, synagogues and cemeteries, as well as consider what Judaism says about subjects such as “pre-planning.” Wednesday, January 7, 7:00 PM Lunch & Learn with Karen Frank, TBA Congregational Nurse Caregiving: Caring for Yourself While You Take Care of Others Caregiving takes many forms these days: grandparents watching grandkids; empty-nesters finding their grown kids back home; spouses with an ill or frail partner, or adults with aging or declining parents. Many of us find ourselves at a loss to how "to do it all!" Join our discussion on how to both care for others without sacrificing our own self-care. Bring your lunch, and we will provide beverages! Thursdays, January 8, 22, February 5 & 19, 2015, 12:00-1:15 PM

Monthly Lunch and Learn: “Jews and Justice” with Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz Each month we’ll explore traditional Jewish texts and glean lessons on current issues, ranging from economic justice to reproductive rights to gun violence, among oth-ers. Bring your lunch ,and we will provide the beverage! Thursdays, January 15, February 12, March 12 & May 14, 11:30 AM Sisterhood Rosh Hodesh Celebrations with Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz The new moon, or new month, is a special holiday for women to celebrate together.
