Presidents Report Not a Rotary light week this week, in fact the usual full on Rotary week.The main tasks for me this week have been the Southland Rotary expo, a cluster activity, on the 4th of October, and meeting with David Greenall, some of the Board and John Manks about auditing and reporting requirements for the Sabu project. As an Honorary member David has very gener-ously given us the benefit of his extensive expertise in this area , and will work further with us so that the Grant application is the best it can be, and that we can feel comfortable that for any international and other projects we can report in line with best Rotary principles. Malcolm Sawle and Heather Chisholm met with a Bayside Councillor and Council staff this week to discuss the concept of a Community Garden and will be pursuing this further. Malcolm also meet with Council staff later in the day to talk about ideas for the Concourse, Malcolm and Heather will keep us informed as they proceed. I attended a final meeting for the Rotary expo on Friday, our inaugural Grand Final holiday and as with all these events, it came together alright in the final lead up. Cooperation between the participating Clubs, Bentleigh Moorabbin Central, Cheltenham, Moorleigh Moorabbin, Hampton and us has been good, and the results of closer contact will be seen in the future. Kylie McMillan the current president of Hampton has taken a lead role in the expo, as only to be ex-pected from someone who has been mentored by Kerrie Geard and Tony McKenna as part of a GSE team.The expo is long term marketing, keeping our brand out there, and reminding the community we are a welcoming community organization always looking for volunteers. unteers at the Rotary Expo on Sunday, Kerrie Geard, Charmaine Jansz, Tony McKenna,Tony Phillips, Megan Glenwright, Tim Dark and Tek Li Chia, our RYLA recipient. Southland are very community minded, this has proved to be great for us as there is a lot involved in the setup for the Centre court. Our meeting this week was themed by Megan with our remembrance of police killed in the line of duty with Victoria Police Blue Ribbon day ac-knowledgement. Thanks Megan. It was great to see Clem from Mordialloc Ro-tary visiting us again on Thursday, I had to ring Mordialloc Rotary to see if we could borrow an extra portable microphone for Sunday, as al-ways I met with a very positive response. The new emphasis on Cluster networking is proving good for all of us. It has been suggested that the meeting for the 29th of October with speaker Ron Iddles be-comes a partner night, I am sure he will be a very interesting speaker, please let your part-ner know they are welcome (and let Malcolm know). We will have the AGM on Thursday 15th Octo-ber, I dont think Ill equal the record for a short AGM but I will certainly be aiming to, as we want to get onto the serious business of a new member talk from Chris Werner. At our meeting on Thursday I was able to an-nounce the very pleasing news that Chris DArcy had accepted to be President Elect Nominee, this will be considered at the AGM.I am absolutely thrilled that Chris has made this commitment, as I now know it is a substantial time commitment and a responsibility to ensure that we continue to be the contributing and car-ing club we are. My thanks to Malcolm Sawle, Ken Mirams and Mary Sealey for being part of the Nominating Committee . Next week we have Jim Grigoriou speaking on Intellectual Property development between CSIRO, Universities and Companies, it should be fascinating. We also have the Farmers Mar-ket which I look forward to every time, as we work together as a Club so well, and the mar-ket is so appreciated by the community.

Hello everyone The annual Masters is soon with us again, this time at Huntingdale, on 19-22 No-vember, which is the week after our Farmers Market. Although the Market has been going really well, there is some doubt about whether the site will be available to us on an ongoing basis, as the Education Dept in-tends to close the school after this year, and demolish the buildings. What happens after that, and whether we will still have access is up in the air. Therefore we do not want to abandon any of our other fundraising activities, and the Masters parking has always been a solid fund-raiser for us. This year, Huntingdale Rotary is looking for us to provide 3 people on Wednesday, 10 per day Thursday through Sunday for parking, and 4 people Thursday through Sunday for ticketing. If we can achieve this, we will earn over $5000 for the Club. Please check your calendars, talk to your spouses/partners or anyone else crazy enough to want to volunteer, and give me an indication as soon as you can on availability for this important activity. For those newer Members of our Club, the Mas-ters Golf parking/ticketing involves four days of very early mornings, standing in heat, wind, rain, wind, dust, and sometimes all of the above on the same day, managing the public carparks or scanning the entry tickets. The day usually ends around 4pm but can be later. If it is quiet and you are lucky, you may even get to see some golf. We usually manage to make it a fun time, if somewhat gruelling, and it has become a traditional annual fundraising activity for our club. I look forward to an overwhelming response. James Glenwright

Rotarian Lawrence gave us an interesting talk on his trip in 1973. He was accompanied by

his wife Virginia and Andrew who was appar-ently an unplanned but pleasant additional passenger.

It was like being back in a 70s slide show as Lawrence took us back to their family adven-ture in what seemed a more innocent world.

They travelled by ship with their Kombi to Sin-gapore and by Kombi Van up Malaya across to Southern India and then by land all the way to France and the English Channel.

They spent 3 weeks driving north in India to the Pakistan Border where Lawrence met a cousin of his by chance!

So Andrew was a hit with all the locals and helped break down barriers. Here he is with one of their self appointed guides

They travelled through Pakistan and then through the Khyber pass to Afghanistan. The photo to the left shows the many Regimental Plagues that they saw on their way through which remind us of the bloody history of this region and the pass itself. Lawrence told us the famous story of the 1842 retreat of the British from Kabul through the pass where out of 16,000 only one European made back into Pakistan. Lawrence was amazed at the stu-pidity of the British!

Lawrence had vivid memories of the painted trucks especially in the Khyber pass.

In Kabul they attended a Buzkashi (literally "goat dragging" in Persian) in which horse-mounted players attempt to drag a goat or calf carcass toward a goal. It is the national sport of Afghanistan and the one they went to was attended by the then King.

It was at this event that Lawrence had his travelers cheques stolen and returned!

From Afghanistan they drove on into Iran

where they had their only breakdown in Te-hran but were fortunate to do so near a me-chanic who could fix it.

Lawrence pointed out that often there was no one who spoke English and that made life in-teresting in scenes like the one on the left

Then it was into the wilds of Eastern Turkey and onto Ankara where they locked them-selves out of the Van. Their attempts to open the van through the side window drew a great crowd who loved it! They decided once they were in the Van again they just had to exit in triumph.

It was an expensive trip and having Andrew along seems to have been a great blessing in winning over the locals.

Royal Melbourne Fellowship Night 22 Thursday 22 October For this night I have ne-gotiated a two course meal for $35 pp with 3 Croquet Lawns and balls thrown in. The Teams are basically full but I am trying to or-ganize 6 balls a lawn so we can have teams of 3 balls playing each other which will give us more players. Still plenty of room for spectators and dinner. Drinks and spectators will be allowed on the lawns and advice may be freely given. Chairs and tables are available near by and some lawn side I suggest we start the drinks and Croquet at 5.00 pm, although I am prepared to be there earlier if anyone one wants to warm up. Those not playing Croquet can come any time before 7.00 when we will go in for Dinner. I think it appropriate we come dressed in formal late colonial dress. Croquet was used by the British as social game and it can be learnt in minutes. The tactics are what really count! If you are not already signed up please email me to let me know you want to come.
