Letter from the Chair
The 2014 show season is now well under way with the first Cape & Gauteng Championship shows behind us. Our first open show, which had to be rescheduled due to a parvo
outbreak, was held on the 9th March, judged by Sylvia Tutchener, Beagle specialist and retired UK A1 list judge. We had a very good entry of 22 hounds please see page 8 for the
full results.
Our website http://thebeagleassociation.co.za is now fully constructed but will obviously be updated on a regular basis particularly the Events page where Beagle of the Year
Leaderboards will be displayed, as will Rogues Gallery so keep an eye on it.
As it is the start of the show season in this issue we have food for thought for exhibitors and judges alike with an article on ring etiquette based on observations of the behaviour of
some our exhibitors and an excellent article on judging by David Webster, President of the Beagle Club UK, which a few of our recent judges would benefit from reading.
There have been a few minor changes to the points allocation for the Beagle of the Year competition in the allocation for BIS placings in the various categories. Anyone wishing to
obtain the new points allocation should contact the chairperson.
KUSA has asked affliated clubs to advise members of the amnesty granted to breeders who have not registered entire litters. Breeders now have the opportunity to register those pups
that they had not registered with the rest of the litter without penalties. The amnesty expires on . Please see our website for greater detail. As it is a prerequisite of membership
of the Association that only registered puppies are sold and that members are bound by KUSA & Club rules, theoretically this should not be concern to any of our members, but
there may be breeders out there to whom you might like to pass the message on.
Our AGM was held on the 9th March. The new committee is listed on page 3. Our next event will be the Breed seminar to be held on the 16th June at Goldfields. This is a must for anyone interested in Beagles particularly breeders, judges and aspirant judges. Our next book sale will be held in May at the shows at Dene.l Please support us as this is our main fundraiser.
A new feature for this year is Rogues Gallery, which is a photo/caption competition. The first entries are featured on page 8 . Please send us your favourite photos of your hounds to
include in this competition. Please do not include any names either of dogs or people, just an appropriate caption – the winner will be chosen at the end of year by an independent
judge. We will also be hosting a paid photo competition on our Facebook page.

We were indeed very fortunate to have Beagle Specialist, Marion Watson of Sligrachan Beagles, NSW, Australia judge us for the second time in under five years.
Marion obtained her first Beagle way back in 1963 and from then on it has been Beagles all the way, both in the UK & Australia, to date, breeding 120 champions. Marion had her first judging appointment in 1979 and became an All Breeds judge in 1998. Marion has judged Beagles extensively at Championship Show level, particularly in England, Scotland, Ireland,
India, The Phillipines, New Zealand, South Africa & Canada. The highlight of her judging appointments undoubtedly was being invited to judge the Beagle Club Show in England
where she had an entry of over 200 dogs.
On her last visit to South Africa Marion had a paltry entry of 3 Beagles and awarded BOB & Group 3rd to Ch Rossut Junket of Pinoak. On this visit she an entry of 17 Beagles, which she
felt was a reasonable entry for South Africa, this year her entire line up for BOB was progeny or grandprogeny of Ch Rossut Junket of Pinoak, BOB & Group 4th going to Ch Pinoak
Archie’s a Duke & RBOB to his son, Pinoak Ernie Who Else of Morninghunt.
Unlike some other judges who will only award to tricolours, Marion does not take colour into consideration when judging, and relies on touch, sight & observation to make her choices. Marion felt that the quality of our Beagles on the whole was good and that we appeared to moving in the right direction. However, there are areas where she is of the
opinion that there is room for improvement in some of the breeding kennels. In particular toplines, depth of forechest, movement & turn of stifle . She remarked that a number of
exhibits had a very short, choppy movement, which is completely wrong for a Beagle, as a dog with this movement would be unable to hunt for a sustained period of time. Breeders should concentrate on improving movement to obtain the desired & necessary reach & drive in the their breeding stock. Turn of stifle - again she felt there were a number that
were far too straight in stifle.
Let us hope that we as breeders will take on board Marion’s comments and instead focussing on size and colour, focus on the issues that she has raised so that by the time of her next visit she will commend on us moving ahead in leaps and bounds, and additionally
let us hope that her entry next time will be the 20 to 30 Beagles we know we can muster. It is not often we get a Beagle Specialist of this calibre judging us.

Regardless of the breed they are judging, all judges must judge only to the breed standard. Each dog must be judged as a whole balanced dog, and for type, temperament and soundness, in that order. A dog must be judged on merit and overall quality. Judging must always be positive judging and never negative. The virtues are assessed against the dog’s faults. There is no such thing as a perfect dog any more than there is a perfect judge.
An outstanding dog with one fault is always preferred to a mediocre dog which excels in no particular feature. It is most important that a judge should suppress his foibles and likes and dislikes and should interpret the standard without bias.
A good judge must not only know what he is looking for: but must also know how to look for it. Balanced judging is most important. In any breed , type must always be considered first.. This consists of the breed characteristics and the breed features. A dog’s temperament is incredibly important and so is soundness.
A sound dog must be able to stand and move correctly for its breed and be free from all disabilities. Beauty, symmetry, style and balance all go towards the making of a superb show dog. Balance can be described as the proportions of each feature in turn one with another and as a whole. Personality character, intelligence, alertness, pride of bearing and showmanship all go towards the sparkle and aura which makes one particular dog stand out from all the others. Condition comes into this too, with the perfect health of the dog, his general fitness, sparkling eye and glistening coat all going to make up the qualities a judge is looking for

Some do’s & don’t’s for those of us who show our Beagles.
1. Be on time and be ready & waiting for your class.2. Be courteous to the ring steward, judge and fellow competitors.3. If you are entered in a number of classes & will need to change dogs and numbers,
inform the ring steward prior to starting.4. Enter the ring in the number order as called by the ring steward & don’t attempt to
move to the head of the line unless asked to do so by the judge.5. Greet the judge but don’t initiate any other conversation either before entering or in
the ring.6. Listen to and follow the judges’ and ring stewards’ instructions.7. Don’t argue with the judge.8. If you are behind a slower exhibitor, allow that exhibitor space and don’t crowd or
push past him/her. Wait a few seconds before you start gaiting your dog so you can gait at your chosen speed.
9. Don’t deliberately run your dog into the one ahead of you.10. When stacking allow plenty of space between yourself & the exhibit in front.11. If you insist on baiting your dog do it discreetly and don’t wave it around in view of
other dogs whether they are in front or behind you.12. If you have to bait, always use an unscented non-food bait, as Beagles are
scenthounds, and food driven, and other exhibits may be distracted by the smell of your bait, whether they can see it or not.
13. Don’t discard or drop bait in the ring.14. If you correct or chastise your dog verbally in the ring, do it quietly so it can’t be
heard by other exhibits. Don’t shout out “no” loudly as this can upset other dogs.15. Don’t ever physically chastise your dog or handle it roughly.16. Don’t take out your disappointment, at not being placed, on your dog.17. Thank the judge.
What some exhibitors need to remember is that dog showing is a sport and an amateur one at that, and that for most people, it is about striving to improve the breed through breeding & showing & it is also the participating and rapport that they develop with their dogs that count. If your need to win is paramount you are in the wrong sport. People who attempt to intimidate other exhibits through shouting, stamping, jostling or other aggressive behaviour have lost sight of the ethos of dog showing, are guilty of cruelty to animals and are mentally ill into the bargain. We have a message for you – clean up your act or get out of our sport – if you don’t, the sport will get rid of you ignominiously.

National Beagle of the Year CompetitionThe National Beagle of the Year is a competition to determine the
Beagle that has won the most Best of Breeds & Reserve Best of Breeds during the course of any one show year, it is not a
competition to determine the dog that has beaten the most other dogs and differs from other competitions that it takes into
account Reserve Best of Breeds. In addition to the Beagle of the Year there are various other categories which are validated by
other KUSA recognised awards, eg Veteran, Junior, Puppy, Baby Puppy, Neutered Dog, as well as recognition given to Sires, Dams & Breeders of the top dogs. The Beagle of the Year is free and all
Beagles exhibited at Championship Shows throughout South Africa automatically qualify
