Answer to the Cover photo contest for June is: A tunnel located on the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway that includes the Needle’s HWY . The winner is: Tom Knight, Cereal City Wings, Chapter "C", Battle Creek, Mi., Region F

I recognized  this photo from a trip we took last summer. We went 7,916 miles in 27 days on our GL 1500. The trip included Gold Rush in Montana as well as Glacier National Park and on to see friends and relatives in Idaho, Oregon and California. We stopped in the Black Hills area on the way home but were there for just a short time. Hope to go back sometime and explore the area further. Tom Knight

Other Guesses Looks like the Pine Needles Hwy around Rapid City, SD. Steve Andrus

I recognized the tunnel pictures as I am originally from South Dakota. I've made several trips to the Black Hills over the years and have been on the Needles Highway both on motorcycle and automobile and, in fact, have taken pictures from the same angle. Mark Holling

Greetings from Mel and Linda Vogt - 2013-2014 National Family of the Year

This year has just flown by for Mel and me. As we are planning our trip to Boyne Falls for Gold Rush, we are reflecting on the past year and the new people we have met as the result of being Family of the Year. It has been awesome!!!! Everyone has been very welcoming and we have developed some new friendships throughout the year.

Here are just a few things to let you know what we have been doing. It has been a busy month. Our chapter had a campout this month. We had such a full weekend that we could only make it for one day.

Members of Nebraska Chapter Z enjoying a day at the campground.

We also attended the Meet and Eat that was held at Peggy Hakanson’s (Nebraska State Director) country home. This was a get-together for all the chapters from Iowa and Nebraska. There was a very good turnout. Early in the day, some of us rode in the Council Bluffs Pride parade, while others were off on a couple different day rides. Later we had a potluck with some people demonstrating Dutch oven cooking. The evening was spent around the campfire. It was a real enjoyable day.

These are pictures from the Meet and Eat. It shows people from chapters in both Iowa and Nebraska.

Mel had his 50th class reunion this month. He graduated high school from Bancroft, Nebraska. He had a good time remembering the “good old days” with classmates. His was a class of 19 graduates. That’s certainly different than mine of 384 graduates, which will be coming up in three more years. It’s tough to admit we are getting old (did I really say that?)

    Mel Vogt sings “Senior Moments”

The same weekend as the reunion, I went to the Iowa State Track Meet to watch our grandson compete in discus throw. He ended up with thirteenth place in the state finals. Of course, we are very proud that he qualified and competed well.

Mel and several of his friends entertained this month at the Shelby County Historical Society Log Cabin Days. That was an outside event and a very good weather day. It was fun to see everyone roaming around and stopping to listen. We just returned from the GWTA Region C Rally which was held in Lincoln, Nebraska this year. Our chapter was hosts at the campground while our state and region director kept things rolling at the host hotel. It was a very fun rally. Below are some pictures. I am sorry to say I didn’t get any pictures of Brain Sower acting out as Mel sang “I Just Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore” or the wonderful little clogging dancers that entertained us before our evening meal. By the way, the meal was one of the best I have ever had at a rally. Much thanks to Judy Schaefer, Peggy Hakansan, and the Nebraska staff for putting together a great rally.

Jim Root AwardCO Chapter A, Front Range Gold (Cont.)

Hi Everyone, Now that school is out across the country, travel will be at a full swing and if you will also be traveling, there are plans you should make to have a safe journey.

    1. Make sure you check your bike. T-CLOCS is always a good place to start. As a reminder here is what the letters stand for:

    a. T – Tires and Wheels (Air Pressure; Tread; Cracks, Dents, loose spokes; Bearings; and Brakes)

    b. C – Controls (Levers, Switches, Cables, Hoses, Throttle)

    c. L – Lights and Electrics (Working Condition)

    d. O – Oil and Other Fluids (Coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel) – Check for Levels and Leaks

    e. C – Chassis (Suspension and Drive Components –chain, belt or driveshaft)

    f. S – Side stand 2. Riding Gear – make sure your helmet

and clothing are in good shape. You should also make sure you have the proper gear for the weather you might be riding through.

    3. Route – Take a look at the long-term weather forecast and plan a route that would miss possible bad weather (if possible). In the central part of the country you should always be prepared for sudden changes in the weather as this seems to happen more in that area.

    4. Passenger – If you are riding with a passenger, make sure they are ready and also have the proper gear.

    5. Load – If you are carrying a lot of equipment is the load balanced on the bike so the center of gravity is maintained. If you are towing a trailer, check your load in the trailer and most of all your tongue weight.

    6. Lodging – Try to make reservations ahead so you don’t get stuck without a room when you are ready to quit for the day. The reservations should be at a point where you are comfortable with the distance you have ridden that day.

    7. Medication – If you take medication, do you have enough with you for the trip? If you think you might need more make sure you have the documentation you need to get it from a pharmacy.

    8. Out of Country – If you plan to leave the U.S., make sure you have the documents you need to cross the border. If the requirement is a Passport, don’t wait until the last minute to get one as that can be expensive.

    9. Checklist – I know some people use a checklist to decide what they want to take on a trip. This can be a really good idea sometimes but make sure you review it periodically to decide if you are taking more than you need. Sometimes it is easier to do laundry than pack a lot of extra clothes as an example.

I am sure I missed something on my list for a safe journey so add what you want. But most of all, be safe this summer as you travel the Highways and Bi-ways on your adventure. Hope to see you at Gold Rush. Doug Green, RED

  • BURGERS AND FRIED PEACH PIES Yes, that was the Front Range Gold club’s destination over the Memorial Day weekend. Our Region E Family of the Year, Bill & Fran Stirling, planned this trip for us because they try to go there every year for “the best ever burgers and fried peach pies”. They’ve had us all drooling with their ravings. Well, our club’s history for rides on this weekend have been snow, rain, sleet and cold. Therefore, 4 couples rode in cars. Stirling’s rode their 1800 Gold Wing and one single rode his motorcycle behind them. We left from Longmont, CO, and rode to Craig, CO, where we spent the night. The weather that day was perfect for riding—all vehicle riders were sorry they weren’t on motorcycles. The next day was cloudy, rainy, and cold. THEN we were glad to be in cars. We all discussed the fact that we needed to be alert for deer. We decided to take the scenic route to Dinosaur, Colorado, to get our burgers and fried peach pies, tour the area, and return to Craig the shorter route. We headed south to Meeker, CO. Stirling’s lead the way and we (Rose and Cal Kimball) were tail. All seemed to be going quite well till we got about 10 miles from Meeker, CO. Being at the tail end of the group and not able to see around curves, we couldn’t figure out why everyone was stopping. Then I saw 2 piles in the road. When I saw the bike on it’s side off the edge of the road I realized it wasn’t piles, but our leaders lying there and everyone including people from oncoming cars were running to them. Our group came at us saying they couldn’t get cell phone service and would we go back to try and find phone service. We turned around, headed back until we came to a farmhouse, and went bounding up to the door. I’m sure the man thought I was a raving maniac pounding on his door and yelling for help. I was so upset, I could hardly tell him what happened and did he have a phone he could use to get help for us. I still can’t believe how this whole situation affected me. I feel that I now know how

awful and unstoppable flashbacks can be. It is something that just happens without your control. I finally realized why it happened to me. My subconscious remembered our own cycle accident of 2001. I didn’t even think that it had affected me that badly. Luckily, 2 of the women who stopped to check the injured were medical people. Someone else had a radio and was able to get help. Needless to say, we never made it to Dinosaur. The Stirlings were taken to the Meeker, CO, hospital where we spent the day to help in any way we could and give moral support. From there they were taken to the Grand Junction, CO, hospital—Fran by ambulance and Bill by air due to a collapsed lung they wanted taken care of speedily. Fran had a dislocated shoulder, fractured humerus, fractured metatarsal, numerous bruises, and road rash on her hands from not wearing gloves. They took her to surgery the next day and relocated her shoulder. In the process, her fracture also realigned. So she wears a sling and boot and is recuperating slowly. She still says “and I still didn’t get my burger and fried peach pie”. Seems she missed out last year, too. Bill’s lung re-inflated, but he had a fractured collarbone and 3 ribs. He also had bruises and road rash on his hands due to no gloves. He finally had surgery on the collarbone to attach a bar over the 3 fractures. He was on oxygen awhile. He wears a sling, uses a breather to keep his lungs exercised, and hopes nobody gives him a big hug around his ribs. He’s recuperating well, still in pain, but able to return to desk work. We’re sure he was getting cabin fever just sitting at home getting well. After the accident, all he could say was “it’s still better than being in a car”. I know that everyone involved in this has their own story to tell, but I still can’t believe how it affected me. I wanted to share my experience so that if it

happens to anyone else, they will know that it is a normal reaction and not to stress out over it. We’re so glad that the injuries weren’t any worse and they are healing ok. We’ve heard so many other stories about deer accidents that turned out fatal. We talked to the state trooper who came to the scene (and the hospital) and he stated that that area gets 5 deer, 2 elk, and an occasional antelope hit every day. We saw evidence of this on our way back to Craig. ALWAYS SCAN TO GET THE BIG PICTURE WHEN YOU ARE RIDING!! Written by Rose Kimball GWTA-FRG Chapter A, CO

Tennessee State Rally, May 2014 It is amazing how fast a year passes. Tennessee state rally has come and gone but will not be forgotten because everyone who was there had a great time. Most of the members went down to Natchez Trace State Park, near Jackson, Tennessee on Friday May 2nd. I got to go there after I got off from work and I got there about 6:45pm. When I got there I found that George had gone with some of the other members up to The Inn for seafood buffet. Shows you how much my husband thinks about me.

As people rode in and got set up the other people who had already set up walked around and socialized. It was a beautiful night with the stars and moon out in the wide open space. It was cold during the night so I had to turn on the electric blanket to stay warm. I know what a hard life. The other campers agreed that it did get cold during the night, of course we were beside the lake so that had something to do with the cold.

On Saturday morning some of the group cooked breakfast, then most of us ate, then some of us cleaned up. After that it was time for a state meeting. Tony Carpenter is our state director and he did good picking the state park and putting on the rally. After the meeting Tony had a ride mapped out that took about an hour and half around the area. While out we stopped at Wal-mart, then stopped and had lunch before heading back to the campground.

When we got back it was time for games. There was good participation for the

games. The game that had the most interest was the life size Jenga. At one time the Jenga got up to level 34 or 35 before it fell over. Everyone had fun watching it.

For dinner that evening Tony had fixed spaghetti and salad. Some of the other members brought desserts to share with the group. So of course no one went hungry. After dinner and clean up we all moved to Tony’s camp site for some gift drawings.

While setting around talking it was decided that we needed to have movie time. Randy went and got the television out of his camper and I got DVD’s out of our camper. It was decided to watch Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood.

Everyone enjoyed the movie and then it was time to turn in for the night.

On Sunday morning we all got up to breakfast being cooked by Charlie, Albert and Georganne. After breakfast some of the other members cleaned up all of the breakfast dishes. Then it was time to start packing up and heading home. At this rally we had people from Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and of course Tennessee.

We are looking forward to next year’s rally where ever it might be.

Marty’s Cones & Carry-outMarty has been serving ice cream and broasted chicken in East Jordan, 509 Water Street, for 20 years. Strange combination? Perhaps, but his chicken is marinated, battered, and cooked in a broaster leaving it crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The only thing that will calm your tastebuds after devouring some broasted chicken is some cool cone lickin’. Our only advice, just try to get there before the little league game is over.

The Bob-In AgainSet in a 1950s diner style, The Bob-In Again of Petoskey, located at 1150 Bay View Road (US-31), is famous for frozen custard, homemade root beer, and hand-packed Bobby Burgers. If you have never tried frozen custard, we highly recommend it!

Yummies“Happiness is Yummies.” People make that comment so often about this small town ice cream shop (look for the pink on Main Street) in Harbor Springs, that they decided to put it on the sign. Plan an evening cruise to Yummies and you will surely be happy with not only your choice of over 60 flavors of ice cream, but the beautiful surroundings too.

(Doug Green, RED, received this e-mail from his friend Jean-Pascal, who is the President of the Gold Wing Federation of France, and he wanted to share this with everyone.) Hi Doug, It's a great honor for me to have my message in your issue. I think it's important you, the American people, know how much we, European people, are grateful by the sacrifice of your young men, by the success of all the American soldiers from Normandy to Berlin. I was, in front of my TV, few days ago, the 6th of June, watching the celebration of the D Day, listening to Barack Obama and my President. I was very affected by where these men came from, America, England, Canada and made this for me. On the 9th of June, Françoise and I, have gone in to Normandy, onto these bloody beaches, after thinking to them and for respecting their memories. Take care, Jean-Pascal Morainville

Hello Doug, Tomorrow is the 70th anniversary of the D. DAY. Once again, I think about these American boys who came from America to rescue my country. On the 6th of June 1944, on the beach of Omaha, "Bloody Omaha", 3000 young Americans died just in a few hours for the French people, for the liberty of the world, against the Nazis. Like writing I have seen on a wall in Williams, Arizona, "Freedom is not free". You live in THE country of freedom but you live, also, in the country of MY freedom. Respect and Honor to all these young men that died during the WW2 and to all the American Veterans. If you know, around you, some Veterans, please tell them how much the French people, and I, are grateful for all they made for us. Take care, Jean-Pascal Morainville

Comments from Around and About *********************** Comments from GWTA Feedback: Stop making the math so difficult, lol. Just want to let everyone know that I met 3 of the club's members yesterday in the parking lot of a grocery store here in Niagara Falls. They were Navy vets and I felt overwhelmed by their presence. We had an extended conversation and at the end I felt quite exhilarated. From Oak Harbor, WA. I don't ride, but I must say that if these two are examples of what your group is all about, then you all should hold your heads up high. The one young man's name, lol, was Larry Mollerstuern. I did not catch the other gents name, nor Larry's wife's name, but the 3 of them have made my year so far. Keep riding and keep enjoying yourselves. From Canada with love and hope. Don Gravelle (Information update: Larry’s wife’s name is Mary Ellen and they belong to Washington, Chapter I)

Hope this finds everyone healthy, happy and anxiously awaiting the XXVII GOLD RUSH.

I am presently sitting in a 54 foot Motor Coach Bus in sweltering humid heat of 90 + degrees!! Where else, but of course, the great city of Washington D.C. I am waiting for 52 middle scholars and adults to board the bus back to Maine. I doze yet a few seconds dreaming I was back in Maine riding on my Gold Wing, enjoying the cool breeze of the ocean as we ride through Arcadia National Park, Bar Harbor Maine.

Please, take note, I said DREAMING!!! OH! Well, it gives one something to look forward to. Just think 5 WEEKS to Gold Rush XXVII at Boyne Mountain Resorts!!

Gold Rush is almost here, it will be great to see all our friends and fellowship together once again. Time sure does fly away. We will miss all those who are unable to attend.

Don’t forget to wear those Hawaiian shirts for the Mardi Gras!! Plus ladies— I think the town is staying open way past people’s bed time!! (Guess I should speak for myself!!) Remember last time – it was a very beautiful warm night and we had a lot of fun!!

Once again, we are looking forward to joining in the festivities that have been put together by the operational staff and national staff. Thanks again to everyone for their contribu- tions to make this event a successful one.

Have you ever contemplated the scenario of what if? What if Gold Rushes seize to exist? Or if your dear friends were not there with you to enjoy the time together?? Two very scary thoughts!!

The XXVII Board Meeting will be held once again on Sunday, July 20th @ 8 AM @ Boyne Mtn. Resort. The location will be announced on Sunday AM—look for the white boards that will be posted in the Lobby.

Your Board Representatives could sure use your support and appreciates any concerns or comments that you have to present-- after all it is you that they represent. We would be honored that you took the time to spend a few hours out of the week to join us.

GWTA’s memberships have drastically decreased this year – What ifs??

It is that time again for elections for the positions of Board of Representative for Regions B, D, F and H as well as Life Member. Your incoming Board Representatives and Life Member terms will start January 2015 thru December 2017 (for 3.).

If you live in these regions- B,D,F,H—and Life Membership -- Please consider running for one of these upcoming open positions to the Board- we are in need of members who want to make a difference and can help further the growth of GWTA.

Regions A, C, E, J will be up for elections next year (2015) and their positions shall start 2016 thru 2018.

The advertisements will be posted in the Touring News as well. Please send your self-nominations form to the office.

Take Care, My Friend, until we meet again,

Drive Safely and Stay Healthy and Happy

    Ride to Lambert’s Restaurant

Here in Tennessee we are lucky to be close to many states that have different kind of restaurants. Prime example is a restaurant in Sikeston, Missouri called Lambert’s Restaurant, (home of the thrown rolls). George and I have been there many times. This restaurant is about 180 miles from our house.

We have some new members in our chapter and they had not heard of Lambert’s or any of the history about the restaurant. So George decided in May that we needed to make a weekend trip to Sikeston for the food at Lambert’s and take the new members so they can understand what you keep dreaming of when people mention Lambert’s and thrown rolls.

We were going up on Saturday May 17th and come back on Sunday May 18th. The week of May 17th was rainy and Saturday had 50% chance of rain so some of members decided to take cars and 4 of us went on 3 motorcycles. It was damp and cool when we left Nashville but the further west we went the sky started to clear up and warm up. By the time we got to Lambert’s it was sunny and beautiful.

We had 9 people there for lunch and waited 15 minutes before we were seated for lunch. That was the fastest we have gotten seated there ever. John and Donna Whitefield and Sarah Dumais had never been there, but boy did they enjoy their food, yeast rolls and the free food. Of course they were not alone. The rest of us put a hurting on all of our food. We got so full no one could order any dessert, which is a shame. We got in and out of the restaurant in less than 1 1/2 hrs.

Well, everyone had decided that we would not spend the night so now we had to make the trip back home with very full bellies. Boy, were we miserable. We did make it home safe and sound, all of us.

John ordered a steak at the restaurant and it came in a huge stainless skillet that I had never seen before. So you can always see new things at places you go to all the time if you take new people and look at items with their eyes. Take the time and share favorite places and restaurants with new members and old members.
