The View from C - notes from the editorAlong with the new year comes, for most people, New Years Resolutions. These
resolutions are a sign that people are looking to change for the better. Sometimesthe change is out of necessity, but hopefully it makes our lives better.
FCEA has evolved thru the change this past year going from Dressage to Equestri-an, and we are still looking for ways to improve the club. A member survey is beingsent out by our membership coordinator, Louise Jordan-Beam, and we are hopingthat you will complete it quickly so that we can analyze the information and incorpo-rate the changes into this years schedule of activities. As with on-line survey’s, youcan count on your responses being anonymous and confidential. Hopefully by thenext newsletter issue, we will have a summary.
Also as a first time attendee to the USDF National Convention, I am hoping that wecan incorporate some of the great information from the convention into the club.
One final thought or should I say request, comes from member Lorraine Clark. Sheis seeking to make a change, a necessary one due to circumstances, please see the note below. I know adjusting to changes due to healthreasons can be difficult, and I wish her all the best.
Until the next issue, Keep your life “In Balance.”, FayComments to [email protected]

Turn Feed Bags Into Money Bags!Turning empty feed bags into cash is easy with the Southern States Special Horse
Organization Winner's (S.H.O.W.) Program. No other feed company has supported the horseindustry more than Southern States. As a part of that commitment, Southern States hasdeveloped the S.H.O.W. Program to provide all non-profit horse associations and clubs theirvery own sponsorship tool. Purchase any from SouthernStates feeds, and save the proof of purchase SHOW symbols. These pop seals are worth 25cents each. Ask you friends to save them too! Just think of how much money we can add toour various activities funds.
Turn in your proof of purchase seals in to any FCDA board member, drop them off withMichelle at Equine Exchange or Fay at Reifsnyder’s Ag Center, or give them to LouiseJordan-Beam, or any board member.

Notes from the 2013 USDF National Convention in Lexington, KYOver the course of three days, I attended numerous meetings, roung table discus-

July 26-27 - Region One Youth TeamsJuly 26&27 - DVCTA is planning a Sport Horse Seminar on July 26&27 at
Iron Spring Farm, contact Anne Moss for more info. Sep 13&14 - Young Horse Symposium - details to come. Sep 23-29 - Dressage At Devon Nov 13 - Fall Meeting - webinar Thurs., 7pm.
Volunteers of the year for the Region were voted upon - Youth is Laura Dickerson, and Adult is Debbi DelGiorno.
Adult Team Competition is officially set to be held by NCDCTA May 31-June 1,2014 in Raleigh, NC
USEF has officially broken the Western Dressage section into it’s own division, apart from Dressage and any specific breed group. The rule book will be updated andposted. (Should now be available.) Western Dressage will evolve and acquire separatejudges and ratings, and will come from USDF, WDA, NAWDA, and AQHA and Morgandisciplines.
Region One is seeking photos of activities to use for the web site.In the works for 2015 is an Adult Amateur Dressage Classic with Region 8. Being
modeled after Lendon’s Youth Festival, it will include a written test, a dressage test, anda rider test. Possibly also a team aspect can be included. Planned for June 2015.
Region One is hosting the Hilda Gurney Adult Clinic this year at Wyndham OaksFarm in Maryland on April 12 & 13. Applicants are needed. So far this series has had60% of participants as Adult Amateurs and 57% of applicants as AA’s. The directivefrom USDF is to try to use AA’s as much as is practical.
Youth activities and notes: Due to the fact that NAYJRC are being held in conjunc-tion with Pony Club Nationals at the KY Horse Park July 15-20, entry fees will go from$500 to $600 per rider. Lendon’s Youth Festival will be the week before, and the Re-gional Youth competition will be the week after. The silent auction to raise money forthe national teams at NJHP Memorial Weekend show last year, was very well received.by adding the on-line aspect the week prior to the show. Also being scheduled is a Youthclinic with George Williams - date not yet determined.
Festival of Champions will be held June 5-8 at USET head quarters in Gladstone,NJ.
The Inaugural USDF National Finals seemed to be a hit. The biggest complimentthat management kept hearing was that this show succeeded in making the competitors“Feel Special”. No matter what level of competition or how they placed, they were madeto feel special. Just over 300 horses qualified, and 297 showed up. It was also made eas-

ier for show management by having the Dressage Finals piggy-back on the NationalHorse Show from the weekend prior. The grounds were decorated to the ninies. Whilethere was some confusion as to the ways to qualify, it should go smoother next year. Itshould also be easier for Region One since our Regional Finals are two weeks earlier.
USSHBA is a new group - US Sport Horse Breeders Assoc., They are affiliated withUSEF and are looking to promote USA Born & Bred horses.
UDSF is coming out with a new member perks program. There will be secret codesincluded with your membership card.
Robert Dover was attending to give a summary of what is happening for our Dres-sage team at the top end of the sport. He was pleased to have had a successful year ofcompetition for the team and the under 25 team. He also mentioned the Dressage OwnersTask Force and their new web site at EXPERIENCEDRESSAGE.COM. This website isbeing promoted for “Passionate Owners Connecting with Talented Riders and Horses”.They are looking to attract owners to purchase horses for the talented riders that are un-able to afford them on their own. This years Festival of Champions will be held at USETheadquarters in Gladstone, NJ, and will be a qualifier for the WEG. For info on the team, check out Doversworld.com
John Long from USEF, gave some updates on what’s happening with the nationalfederation. As always they are looking to improve the horse welfare and debates stillabound on the use of roll-kur. USEF will be restructuring it’s board from 54 down to 19,and will be directing the affiliate organizations to make their decisions for their sport. The 2015 World Cup Final will be back to Las Vegas, and currently the 2018 WEG’s areonly being bid by Bromont, Lexington, and Wellington.
Competition Open Forum - concentrated mostly on the confusion with the new FEItests, and the re-labeling of the Intermediare tests. If you have already qualified for Re-gionals using the old tests, you are still qualified. More info will be posted on-line.
For shows offering a TOC (test of choice) category, there will be limits on what canbe grouped into a TOC. Para Tests can go together, CT tests can go together, Rider Testscan be grouped together, and FEI dressage can be grouped. They also recommend keep-ing Musical Freestyle in it’s own group. They also do not recommend grouping assortedmulti levels together, unless they are adjacent levels.
Freestyles - reminder to allow enough time for judges to record their scores and com-ments. Since almost all scoring is completed after the ride, the judge needs more than theminute or two to finalize the scores.
Dressage Foundation (DF) Round Table - Jenny from DF shared numerous factsabout the grants offered by the DF. While some grants have become more competitiveover the past few years, others sometimes don’t get very many applicants.
Instructor Grants are available to instructors of ALL levels. You can be full time, part time, upper level or lower level.
Vi Hopkins Grants - Available to GMO’s for clinics and activities where there is au-ditor benefit as well as rider benefit. The idea is to get more people involved with theclinic or activity.
Century Club rides - When the combined age of the horse and rider is 100 years ormore, the rider can apply to the Dressage Foundation to do a Century Club Ride. Youmust apply ahead of time, get show managements approval, and fill out the required pa-perwork. The show does NOT have to be recognized by USDF, it can be a schoolingshow atmosphere with a qualified judge. There are even cases where the ride is done pri-vately. If you have any questions, contact the DF directly. A word of note, to continuethis program, DF is seeking donations. It costs about $100 for each ride, for plaque, rib-bon, shipping, and publicity, as well as the permanent memorial of the recipient.
13
Dancing Horse Fund - awards grants to non-profit groups and GMO’s to promotemusical freestyles at all levels. Funds may be used for clinics/seminars or sound sys-tems.
Sally Swift Memorial Fund - provides grants for hosting a Centered Riding Clinic. These are just a few of the grants available from the DF. They have grants for
Young Riders, Adult Amateurs, Dressage Instructors, Dressage Judges, Dressage Breed-ers, High Performance Riders, non-profit groups, and a few more. FMI go todressagefoundation.org
Retaining and Growing Membership - Corrine from Oregon Dressage Society1000-1250 members dues of $75/yr
They offer clinics, structured shows, championship, and year end awards, they coverthe whole state, and get members from surrounding states. Volunteering is not a prereq-uisite for getting awards. To get volunteers, they do a physical out reach with personalinvitations, and phone calls. They write personal thank-you’s to all volunteers, and postpictures of volunteers on the website. The website is updated with photos after each ac-tivity. Photo’s are posted on the main pages of the site. If you have a particularly goodvolunteer, notes can be sent to employers to ask that a recommendation be added to theemployee file. (This works better with larger companies, since small businesses usuallyalready know what their employees are involved in.) With volunteers, you should alsoget to know them, and get to know WHY they volunteer. Some just want to help and arenot leaders, some are leaders and like to be in charge, others like the recognition, somelike to see their pictures posted, some like to free attendance perk. What ever it is, get toknow your volunteer and satisfy that need.
The last part of this round table was devoted to survey’s. ODS does a survey eachyear to see why they are loosing members. They know there will always be membershipturnover, but they wanted to find out why. The first time they did a survey they didn’task the right questions. They learned to direct their questions better and ask more specif-ic questions and provide more directed answers and options. An open answer can pro-vide poorer feedback depending on the survey program you use. It was also helpful toallow for levels of agree or disagree. When they started to do survey’s, the most likelyreason for loosing members was….go ahead and try to guess….I’m not showing. Now,they have modified their activities and provide more activities for those that don’t show, and the response that they are now more likely get is - I don’t have a horse or I’m no lon-ger riding. They are still trying to invent ways to keep those members involved in theGMO community.
Show Management Round Table - AnnTalked about handling last minute requests - can vary from show to show, but the
big message was to have a policy and stick to it in a friendly way. For example if some-one requests to be added after times have been posted, offer to add them at the end of theday, HC (unless that class happens to be the last class of the day) add the late fee, smileand take their money.
If you have local people that are training to their TD’s license, offer to let them TDyour schooling show, for free of course, or for volunteer perks. If you have a largeschooling show, the secretary should be paid at least a small sum of money. It keepspeople interested in doing the work, and compensates them for their time. Even $1 perride allows the secretary a little reward.
These are just some of the highlights from this year’s convention. I really had a nicetime, and enjoyed the meetings. I am hoping that I can go again next year Dec 5-8 inCambridge, Mass. Anyone wanna go by train? Fay Seltzer
