A successful national and international dressage competitor, Mr Williams, the young-est of nine children, was raised with horses. He has trained with many of the well knowndressage greats: Karl Milkolka, Egon von Neindorff, Major Hector Carmona, Melle vanBrugen, Klaus Balkenhol.

He believes that all horses can be improved through the correct usage of dressageprinciples. Many dressage enthusiasts know him as: the former head trainer of theTemple Farms’ Lipizzans, or the rider of the floppy eared mare, Rocher, or as President ofUSDF. Through this clinic, you will see that his talents as a rider are also complementedby his great gift as a trainer and teacher.

“Each horse has a different personality,” says George. “Horses have pretty muchmeant everything to me. They have shared basically all aspects of my life – as a boygrowing up, my first adventures away from home as a young man, my career as an adult, and I met my wife through horses. They are the reason I live where I live. I can't think ofmuch that they have not influenced. I feel very fortunate, for, how many people can makea career out of their passion?”

Horses not in compliance with this rule may be required to leave thegrounds upon request by Competition Management."

"Michael Poulin's Thoughts onTraining a Horse to Grand Prix"

This article gathers some of Michael's thoughts on classical riding to Grand Prix.Foreword

Congratulations on choosing dressage as your discipline. As you know, dressage isdesigned to make a better riding horse, not necessarily a better competition horse, although if you do the correct training on the ground from the beginning, you will bea very happy rider.

Training HorsesI work a young horse from the ground for several months before I get on him for the

first time. By working from the ground, you can eliminate the horse's fear and anxietybecause you are teaching the horse commands that he can easily understand. Thisgives the horse more confidence in the work. Learning to long line will be one of themost valuable tools for your future Grand Prix horse. Once he has developed balanceand strength from this approach, you will have already made a major leap forward inthe understanding of what will be asked for in later development.

"What Judges Look for at Second and Third Level" By Sarah Geikie

This is a follow up article to May's Op-Ed, "What Judges Look for at Training andFirst Level" by Sarah.

At every level, judges are looking for correct riding and horses that are being riddenand trained in the right way. In addition to this, judges want and expect to see thathorses are shown at the appropriate level to their schooling. The rule of thumb is thatyou should show your horse one level down from the level you are training at home. The directives for each level are printed on all of the test sheets. Riders can and shouldrefer to these often to make sure that your horse can easily perform the movementsthat are required. Judges do not want to see the horse and rider struggling with themovements within the test, therefore the rider should be sure that the horse is con-firmed at the level they will be competing. A show is just that; the rider is presentingthe horse in the best light, so that you can showcase the horse's highlights, andminimize the weaker points, for very few horses excel at all of the movements, exceptmaybe Valegro!

In Second Level is where collection enters into the horse's training. There arecollected and medium paces in this level. Collection requires a much higher degree ofimpulsion and engagement than in First Level. Because of the increased degree ofactivity of the horse's hind legs, and the more supple, carrying back muscles, theoverall balance of a Second Level horse is more uphill. The shoulders and withers areelevated, giving the horse a lighter, more compact appearance, one with more bouncein his trot and canter, or more air time.

Stay tuned for the next TDF exclusive article, coming in August! In the meantime, please consider a donation of any amount to TDF to support our mission: To cultivateand provide financial support for the advancement of dressage in the U.S.
