There are different reasons why you might adapt an activity. Can you come up with 3?

MAKING THE PLAYING AREA SMALLER

eg. cross court basketball, cross pitch football, ½ court badminton. Why might we do this?

Less demanding on players fitness.

More demanding on players control. eg in Football- 4 v 4 on a small area requires control and effective use of space.

MAKING THE PLAYING AREA LARGER

Why might we do this?

easier for pupils as they have more space for control and errors

more demanding on players fitness

Adapting equipment is often used for beginners tolearn. Come up with an example of this.

Smaller- A short handled badminton racket makes it

easier to hit the shuttle. - A smaller basketball is easier to hold and

control.

Larger- A larger ball in softball makes it easier to catch

or hit. - A larger goal in football makes it easier to score.

Lower- A basketball or netball hoop could be lower

so younger children find it easier to score.- A gymnasts beam can be lower to practice

moves safely.

Lighter- Lighter hockey balls to avoid injury with

inexperienced players.- Foam tennis balls, travel slower so are

easier to hit.

The number of players can be reduced or increased: Write down why you think you might increase or decrease players in a team.

Reduced team size- reducing the number of players means that

each player will get more touches of the ball e.g. 2v2 basketball.

- It also make the game less complicated as there are fewer options to think about.

Increasing- Increasing the number of players means

you can practice tactics like overloading offence or defence.

Rules are often changed to encourage players to perform specific skills. This is also known as a conditioned game.

Basketball- 4 points for every lay-up scored. This encourages

performer to try and perform the lay-up more often.

Football- One touch- this encourage the performer to make

quick decisions as well as working on their control of the ball.

Come up with another example of changing a rule to encourage players to practice a specific skill.

Rules might also be adapted for safety reasons.

Rugby-Touch/tag rugby instead of full contact. This means tactics and skills can be practiced while proper tackling is still being learned.

Hockey- No lifting the ball. This is a skill that must be performed well to be safe so is often used until players are more skilful.
