Patient Safety Awareness Week celebrated at SJBAll HSHS colleagues were asked to participate in National Patient Safety Week (NPSW) activities March 12-18 to raise awareness of the importance of providing our patients with the safest care possible.

A community of Flat Safety Stanleys was on display in the hallway to the Board Room. The concept behind these department creations was all colleagues are “United for Patient Safety.” The fun characters surrounded a banner signed by colleagues recommitting themselves to patient safety using a mini-Sharpie to remind us that medical errors can have permanent consequences for our patients.

Each day during NPSW, President and CEO Paulette Evans sent special email messages encouraging colleagues to participate in the activities. Day one included the following reminder: “Because our patients and their loved ones have put their trust in us to keep them safe as we care for them, we must do everything we can to live up to that sacred obligation... To help raise awareness about how critically important patient safety is, I am asking that you set aside 11 minutes this week to watch the story of Josie King, a pediatric patient who died as a result of medical errors.”

If you haven’t already, please watch the video and reflect on what you can do to keep our patients safe.

On Wednesday, HSHS presented two “High Reliability - Certified Zero” safety awards to Breese colleagues: Zero Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections for 36 months, and Zero Incidents of MRSA for 36 months.

Congratulations to winners of the Safety Week contests. Special thanks to Sodexo for donating the $25 gift cards!• HSHS Lands End Polo—John Elliott• HSHS Blanket—Mike Vargo, Chasity

Friederich, Barb Eilers• $25 Sodexo Gift Card—Mary Hemker,

Lynn Broeckling, Marsha Martin, Cathy Bostick

• HSHS Backpack Bundle—Toni Kohrmann

During Patient Safety Awareness Week, each department created a flat safety Stanley, and colleagues recommitted themselves to patient safety by signing the banner (top). (Right) SJB President and CEO Paulette Evans is the first to sign the banner. (Bottom, l-r) Bill Cox of HSHS Quality poses with One North colleagues Cheryl McKee, Connie Gebke, Patty Buscher, Jeanne Thole and Nancy Kraeger, displaying the safety awards presented to St. Joseph’s Breese.

Catholic Health Association Lenten Reflection Week 2Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion embrace us. Psalm 79:8“Can you let this not be about you?” the pastor asked as Jane tried to explain her resistance and guilt. Evening darkened the small office just outside the tumultuous emergency department. There had been a building collapse and Jane’s mother had been nearly crushed. Jane was the only relative, a long-alienated daughter. “But I’ve wanted to be reconciled,” she wept. “I just never had the courage to face her. Now it may be too late.”Over several hours, the chaplain patiently encouraged Jane along a path of self-awareness, helping her realize that it was herself she needed to face. Her mother’s situation, while tragic, offered Jane a catalyst to confront the years of excuses and denials that had paralyzed her. Slowly, the hope of reconciliation washed over her. When her mother finally stabilized, Jane leaned close to her battered face. Her mother summoned the strength to whisper, “I have never stopped loving you.” That forgiving whisper breathed a vital courage into both women. Each would survive a particular kind of death that day.Despite our best hopes and intentions, life can collapse around us. Broken promises, unfulfilled dreams and soured relationships can litter our landscapes. We may even lose God in the rubble. This week, Isaiah offers us God’s forgiving invitation, “Come now, let us set things right,” says the Lord. “Though your sins be like scarlet, they will become white as snow.”God will never stop loving us and longs to embrace our repentant hearts. Let us listen to and believe this whisper.

SJB ranks well nationally for overall care, discharge communication and cleanliness...congratulations to all!According to their website, Becker’s Healthcare is the “leading source of cutting-edge business and legal information for healthcare industry leaders.”

Their portfolio includes five trade publications including Becker’s Hospital Review, Becker’s ASC Review and Becker’s Infection Control & Clinical Quality.

Becker’s Hospital Review, collects and assesses data and often posts lists of hospitals from across the nation on their website, beckershospitalreview.com. In recent years, St. Joseph’s Breese has been included on many of these lists, including “100 Great Community Hospitals 2016” last June.

Since the beginning of the year, SJB has been included on three national lists. The information for each was pulled from CMS’ Hospital Compare website and represents HCAHPS scores from April 2015 through March 2016: • In January, SJB ranked #37 on Becker’s list of “57 best overall patient-rated

hospitals.” The hospitals on the list had 90 percent or more of patients give them an overall care rating of nine or ten on the patients’ HCAHPS survey. The highest score was 97 percent, Breese had 90 percent, and the national average was 72 percent. SJB was also on the 2016 and 2015 lists with 93 percent, and the 2014 list with 89 percent.

• In February, SJB ranked #8 on Becker’s list of “54 hospitals with the best patient discharge communication practices.” The hospitals listed had at least 94 percent of patients report they were given information about how to care for themselves after hospital discharge. The highest score was 98 percent, Breese had 95 percent, and the national average was 87 percent.

• More recently, on March 20, Becker’s released their list of “59 hospitals with the cleanest patient rooms, as reported by patients.” SJB was #39 on the list of hospitals for which 89 percent or more of patients reported on their HCAHPS survey that their room and bathroom were always clean. The highest was 96 percent, Breese came in at 89 percent, and the national average was 74 percent. SJB also made the 2016 list with 90 percent, the 2015 list with 93 percent, the 2014 list with 91 percent, and the 2013 list with 90 percent.

Express Yourself — Colleague Engagement survey coming soonThe theme for this year’s Colleague Engagement Survey is — Express Yourself. We want to encourage all colleagues to share their voice and participate in the annual Colleague Engagement Survey from April 17 – May 1. On April 17th, look for an email with a link to the survey.

The responses to the Colleague Engagement Survey are confidential and administered by The Advisory Board. Findings from the survey will help us assess our strengths and weaknesses as an organization and ensure we have the tools needed to succeed. The survey results also allow us to compare ourselves to peer hospitals and health systems.

After the results are compiled, leaders across the System will work with colleagues to address areas for improvement and build upon successes. Your participation in the surveys is important and appreciated! Express Yourself!

Catholic Health Association Lenten Reflection Week 3Whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst. John 4:14During Philadelphia’s harsh winter, Joe lived on a steam grate in center city. George had met him there while volunteering with a homeless outreach program. Joe, articulate and engaging, was easy to befriend. Nevertheless, he was afraid to come in to the shelter. One morning, on his way to a downtown meeting, George stopped to pick up coffee. He decided it would be nice to take a cup to Joe on his way. Sitting down on Joe’s grate, George offered him the steaming coffee. “Oh, thanks anyway, but I only drink tea,” Joe said. George burst out laughing at his noble mistake. “You didn’t think homeless people had choices, did you?” Joe countered. George, a good-hearted, generous man, learned a lesson that day about the human dignity often hidden under accretions of poverty, neglect and disenfranchisement.Jesus made no such mistake when he met the woman at the well. Instead, he peeled through her accretions by respectful engagement and questioning. The woman, heartened by him, responded wholeheartedly. This week, God invites us to strip away any pretense or fear keeping us from coming home to him. The readings remind us to hear, observe and teach the Divine Law. They encourage us to soften our hearts for God’s voice.God knows our brokenness and hard-heartedness. Yet, we are invited to repent and to believe that we are not far from God’s kingdom. This week is a good time to seek God’s feedback on our lives by a sincere examination of conscience, and a fearless request for healing. It is a perfect time to come home to Love.

Get to know IRISThe results are in for the system-wide renaming contest for RLSolutions and the name that received the most votes is IRIS (Incident Reporting Information System). There was great participation from all HSHS facilities as submissions totaled nearly 3000.

Please continue to be as diligent as ever and report to IRIS all safety events and feedback involving our patients, colleague, visitors, and facilities as they occur. Safety events include incidents that cause harm, near misses, good catches, and unsafe conditions. Examples of scenarios could be a time out before surgery, recalling a meal tray for a diabetic patient, or pausing to check two patient identifiers before administering medication.

Colleagues who voted were entered to win prizes and the winners are:• Angela Summers, EVS Facilitator - SEB• David Bauer, Central Transport Facilitator – Sacred Heart• Kathleen Dornan,RN, Women and Infants Services – St. Mary’s Green Bay• John Elliott, RN, Critical Care/ER – St. Joseph’s Breese• Megan Strohm, RN, Oncology – St. John’s• Olivia Howe, RN – HSHS Medical Group• JoBeth Geier, Technical Analyst II – HSHS ISC

Congratulations winners! Thank you to everyone who voted.

Nat’l Catholic Sisters Week celebrated, Sister Joan recognizedLaunched in March 2014, National Catholic Sisters Week (NCSW) is an annual national campaign held from March 8–14, dedicated to celebrating Catholic sisters and to raising awareness of their vital contributions, both past and present.

Locally, NCSW was celebrated with a Mass on Sunday, March 12, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. The congrega-tion of St. Dominic helped raise sufficient funds and built the initial St. Joseph’s Hospital building which opened in 1897. Deacon Linus Klostermann, a chaplain in the Pastoral Care department, delivered the homily sharing a bit of hospital history and recognizing the Sisters who have worked through the decades to make our hospital possible. Hospital representatives attended and participated in the offertory procession.

Within the hospital, a photo time line was posted for the public across from Registration, documenting the different congregations responsible for admin-istering the hospital over the decades: the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross and the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis.

Pastoral Care Coordinator, Sister Joan Markus, of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, was presented a corsage by the Mission Committee to thank her for her service and dedication. Floral arrangements were delivered to retirees Sister Dorothy Niemann and Sister Loretta Schreiber of the Holy Cross Sisters in Merrill, Wis., and to the Hospital Sister Health System’s founding order, the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis in Springfield.

In celebration of National Catholic Sisters Week, mission co-chair Sue Darr pins a corsage on Pastoral Care Coordinator Sister Joan Markus in recognition of her service.

Catholic Health Association Lenten Reflection Week 4Whoever hears my word, and believes in the One who sent me has passed from death to life. John 5:24“End stage melanoma,” the doctor pronounced, after Mary requested complete honesty. It seemed unfair to those who knew her: an ebony spot, unnoticed on her back, soon would bleed its ink across her death certificate. For Mary, though, the irony lay not in her diagnosis, but in the thought that so few people really knew her or would care.An unmarried, retired teacher, Mary was an only child. With only distant cousins, she had made the parish her family. She was a daily communicant, a diligent contributor and respected neighbor. Mary knew this, but for decades, she had still gone home each night to a lonely house and a solitary life. How surprised Mary was when, during her final weeks in hospice, visitors came in waves to comfort her. Students spoke of her steady influence; neighbors of her charity. Colleagues remembered her patience. When one visitor lamented Mary’s situation, she stopped him, mid-sentence. “I have never been happier,” she said. “I had no idea so many people loved me.”Life’s circumstances can conspire to convince us that we are unimportant, unloved, even useless. Sometimes, these perceptions are self-imposed. At other times, they are pressed on us by hostile forces, as they were on Jesus at the end of his life. But Jesus assures us in this week’s readings: “The one who believes in me will never die.” He touches the blind man with light and the royal official’s son with resurrection. Jesus calls us to trust that we are infinitely loved. Believing it, we have the strength—even the joy—to go with him to Calvary.

Thank you to all who donated blood on March 9Our appreciation to everyone who helped to make the blood drive on March 9 possible. 37 donors presented to donate blood, and 34 units were collected. This generates enough blood products to help as many as 136 patients at health care centers in our region!

Lynn Broeckling, One North RN, brought a friend to donate, and was the lucky winner of the drawing for a $25 gift card to Popeye’s Chop House in St. Rose. All donors should have received a coupon for a St. Patrick’s Day t-shirt as well, but due to the amazing turnout, we ran out of coupons. If you did not receive one, please contact Alissa Fuhrmann with Mississippi Valley at [email protected].

The next drive will be held in the Heritage Room on Friday, May 5th. All presenting donors will receive a pair of Gateway Grizzlies tickets.

Beware of Phone ScamWe received word of a phone scam circulating in Clinton County. Caller ID listed the caller as St. Joseph Hospital or the City of Breese, but the number was not usable. The caller talked of lowering a hospital bill/water bill by paying immediately with a credit card.

Please be aware that this is not a call from the hospital or the city – it is someone who has spoofed info via phone and caller ID. As always, be cautious of phone callers soliciting information or assistance, and never give out personal information over the phone.

Other tips to keep in mind regarding phone solicitations:• If you are suspicious of an offer, ask

the caller for a callback number. Then check the number to verify it is indeed the company/organization represented.

• Ask the caller to verify your information, but never list it for them. Make them list if for you. For example, ask the date of the hospital service being billed to be sure the person you are talking to is legitimate.

• Always be cautious about sharing or confirming any personal information online. If you suspect felonious activity, verify or report it to the appropriate authorities.

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese billing questions/issues may be discussed with financial counselor Marsha Martin at extension 307.

The Feast of St. Joseph celebrated; the public invited to attendThe Joy of Simplicity was the theme for the 2017 Feast of St. Joseph celebration. On Tuesday, March 14, an 11am Mass was offered in the Heritage Room by the Most Reverend Stanley Schlarman. Deacon Linus Klostermann of the Pastoral Care Department also officiated. Colleagues, physicians and community members attended. Special thank you to Sister Joan Markus for planning the service and Marge Detmer for providing the music.

From 11am to 1pm, a complimentary meal of soup, a lettuce salad and homemade bread was served by the Mission Committee to celebrate the simplicity of Joseph. Soups served included chicken noodle, garden vegetable and potato bacon. In lieu of a fee, a donation of $5 was accepted in a simple bowl at the end of the serving line to benefit food pantries in Carlyle, Breese, Germantown, Trenton and New Baden. The bowl was to remind colleagues of the Lenten Rice Bowl initiative taking place. Thank you to Food Services colleagues for preparing the wonderful meal and to Mission Committee members for serving.

From 4-6pm, the public was invited to share in the same simple supper for a $5 donation to benefit area food pantries.

Thank you to all who attended Mass and donated to those in need of food in the communities we serve.

Monthly Compliance Video #3 launched – IT SecurityThe next video in a series by the HSHS Responsibility department was recently launched regarding IT Security, and should be viewed in your department huddles. View the video here: IT Security Video Link

Colleagues should keep in mind the following key points in regards to IT Security:• User passwords should never be shared with anyone within or outside of HSHS

unless written permission has been granted by the Information Services Center or Local System Information Systems. (See HSHS User Password Security Policy HS-2 at User Password Security.)

• Passwords should not be written down and stored in places like a desk drawer, underneath a mouse pad or keyboard, or any place that would be accessible to anyone with access to a user’s workstation.

• Colleagues should never open attachments or documents from unknown sources. • HSHS IT will never ask a colleague to click on a link and enter their user name and

password. This is a method used by cyber attackers to gain access to HSHS IT systems by capturing a colleague’s login.

• Colleagues should immediately report to the IT Security Officer, Ryan Lewis, if they believe their password has been compromised.

• Colleagues should forward suspicious emails to [email protected].

These monthly videos are posted on the System Responsibility section of the HSHS intranet. If you have any questions about the video series or have problems accessing the videos, please contact your Division Responsibility Officer, Carmen Joiner ([email protected]) 618-234-2120, x2998.

National Health Care HR Professionals Week was March 12-18Meet the Southern Illinois People people:

Join in the RISEN ExperienceAll colleagues in Southern Illinois are invited to experience the RISEN program, and the application process is open now.

RISEN is a spiritual (not religious) workshop offering an excellent opportunity to learn more about yourself: what gifts you have; what gives meaning to your life; how to tap into your inner strength, enhance communication in your relationships, listen to your own spirit and the spirit of others; and deal with stress and burnout.

Sessions will be held May 9, 10, 16 and 17 at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

RISEN is four full-days in length — you must attend all four 8-hour sessions. In addition, you will meet with a smaller group four to six times for a total of eight hours during the next three months. This is all paid time and you can receive CEUs for completing the RISEN program. Overnight accommodations are available as needed.

Space is limited. Talk to your leader today about attending. Upon approval, apply online through the intranet on the People Services page. Applications will be accepted through April 14, 2017.
