ABSTRACT

Rifki Dwi Ananto Martono. X2210023, “IMPROVING STUDENTS‟ ABILITY IN

WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH ANIMATION MOVIES (A

Classroom Action Research in the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Klego in the

Academic Year of 2011/2012)”. A thesis. Surakarta:Teacher Training and Education

Faculty. Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, 2012.

The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether or not animation

movies can improve the students‟ writing skill; and (2) to describe the class situation

when animation movies implemented.

The research was carried out at SMP Negeri 2 Klego. It was conducted from

April 2012 up to May 2012. The subject of the research was the students of class VIII D

of SMP Negeri 2 Klego in the academic year of 2011/2012. The research was conducted in

two cycles: four meetings in the first cycle and three meetings in the second cycle. It

was optimized the use of animation movies as the media for teaching writing.

There are two kinds of data: qualitative data and quantitative data. The

qualitative data are collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The

quantitative data are collected using test. The quantitative data are analyzed through

descriptive statistic technique including pretest, test in cycle 1, and post test.

The research findings show that the use of animation movies can improve

students‟ writing skill and class situation. The improvement of students‟ writing skill

includes: (1) the students organized their ideas coherently using appropriate generic

structure of narrative; (2) the students used more appropriate vocabularies; (3) the

students wrote their naratives in grammatically correct sentences; (4) the students used

spellings and punctuations correctly in their composition. The class situation also improves

which includes: (1) students were active and creative, they paid attention to the

teacher‟s explanation; (2) they did all exercises given by the teacher. In addition, the

students‟ mean score improved. It could be seen from their writing mean score of pre-test,

post test in cycle 1, and cycle 2, that is 68.91, 73.12, and 76.71 respectively the last mean

score is higher than KKM which is 74.00.

Finally, it could be concluded that the use of animation movies could improve the

students‟ writing skill and the class situation. Based on such findings as presented above,

the researcher expects that animation movies could be used in other writing classes.

Key words: writing comprehension, animation movies.
