IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR 2017’S CLIMBING

FOR A CAUSE

COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE

It is of extreme importance that your phone is charged for the day of the climb. While we cannot predict service signals for everyone, program these two numbers into your phone:

George Diver: (303) 489-9223 Jess Leebelt: (303) 506-7300

These are the people you will check in with for the duration of the climb. If you: - Are unable to reach your destination and must turn back (Barr Camp or summit) - Are injured and need help. - Anything that changes your planned climb.

It is imperative that everyone has a safe and enjoyable climb. Keep us in the loop so we can account for where everyone is throughout the day.

WHERE AND WHEN TO BE

Most participants are arriving in Manitou/Colorado Springs the night before the climb – Thursday, August 3. Eat a hearty dinner the night before, get a good night’s rest.

EVERYONE meets at the trailhead at 5:30 AM, Friday, August 4th. You are more than welcome to create your own pace after the climb begins, but we all start at 5:30 AM.

HOTELS

Unfortunately, bulk-room rates were either too high, or not available in justifiable quantities due to wedding season, etc.

Luckily, there is a large selection of hotels and motels throughout the area that will match individual needs and budget. TripAdvisor, Expedia, etc., will list rate specials, availability, etc. We do encourage booking sooner than later, as demand appears to be high.

PARKING FOR THE CLIMB

You are responsible for transportation to and from the parking lot, at the base of the trailhead. The closest lot and most preferred option (A) will be the small circular lot at the entrance to the Barr Trailhead. If this lot is full, plan B is the upper lot of the Cog Railway – which is about a block from plan A. Carpooling is a wise plan.

*Unfortunately, as of December 2016, parking in these lots require a reservation and payment which comes to $22.40

Reservations and payment for your parking spot can be made here:

https://denverparking.spplus.com/city-of-manitou-springs.html Towards the middle, you will see Barr Trail Lot. Your purchase process will look like this:

** DO NOT plan on using/buying a ticket for the Peak Cog railway whatsoever. The risk of missing your only ride down is too high if you’re not exactly on time, or cannot summit the mountain to catch the train.

PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR 2017’S CLIMBING

FOR A CAUSE

Pikes Peak is known for encountering many different weather situations in one day. It’s not unheard of to experience rain, hail, sleet and snow in one day. Here’s a quick reference for essentials to pack for your climb.

• Camelback • WATER, WATER, WATER – enough to hold around 2 liters (you can refill at Barr Camp) • Snacks such as trail mix, apples, granola bars, energy bars, dried fruit. • Shot Blocks (or something of the sort) to replace electrolytes • Sunblock • Light waterproof jacket (a cheap rain poncho can help as well)

o Something you can roll up and put in your backpack • Sweatshirt or something of the sort for warmth (as a precaution) • Long hiking pants for the chilly summit • Gloves if you prefer • Hat • Sunglasses • Hiking boots or shoes that have grip • Cell Phone!

6. Add a photo, if you’d like. Personalizing your profile WILL help people be more inclined to donate.

7. Upon creation, click “Go to Your Fundraiser,” which will take you to your personal dashboard. This is where you can view how much you have raised, traffic to your page, post updates and make any necessary changes. Explore this.

8. Click the “Set Goal” button on your main dashboard to enter your personal goal again, for internal tracking and reporting in your dashboard.

9. Click “Edit” to the left, scroll down. Find “Advanced Settings” and click the drop down. **UNCHECK the first box “I want other people to help me fundraise.” This seems counter-intuitive, but makes it so your page is yours only, and you can track your personal goal. Other peers/coworkers/etc. will not get their fundraiser mixed into yours. It says you’re in a team, but you are setting up your individual page.

10. Make any further edits or additions you’d like now. 11. Click the “View” button to the left to view your page. 12. From here, you see your actual page. All info and links to and from your dashboard, or to the

Climb Event are accessible. The more bells and whistles you add, the better you’ll be able to market yourself!

13. On the main event page, visitors will have the option to donate to your campaign by either clicking on your page link towards the bottom, or by selecting your name from the resulting drop down and $ amount selection.

14. Now, send to everyone you know – email, share on social media, etc.

The easiest way to register yourself for your climb is to pay through your own fundraising page. Once it is created, simply “donate to yourself” the $28 fee to register. This way, Family Tree will see the amount and allocate that as your entry.

If you have any questions, or need assistance, please e-mail Jess Leebelt: [email protected]

Climbing Information Pikes Peak Option 1: Trailhead to summit, with shuttle back down to the parking lot. Pikes Peak Option 2: Trailhead to Barr Camp and back down to the parking lot (Approx. 7 miles each way) Hotels We do recommend arriving in the Colorado Springs / Manitou Springs area mid-day Thursday, Aug 3rd. While we are not booking a hotel block this year (not enough available in one location), there are a large number of hotels and motels throughout the area, all for varying budgets. TripAdvisor is listing hotels ranging from $90-200 per night. We do advise booking as soon as possible, as rooms appear to be booking quickly for the summer season. After-Party A celebration of everyone’s accomplishments will be planned for (tentative) Friday, August 11. Location and details to follow.
