K-2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On the first day of this term all the students from Kindergarten through to Year 2 had a fabulous day at their athletics carnival. A new format to our carnivals meant the K-2 athletes had their own day of fun and all the students were able to have a go at each of the disciplines on the day. They competed (for fun!) in sprints, long jump, discus, shot put and a variety of different novelty events. It was also great to see many family members come and cheer the children along. They all had smiles on their faces and enjoyed the day. A big thank you to Mrs Hoffman for her organisation and to the teachers and Year 6 helpers on the day. Also a big thank you to Sharon and the P&C for running the canteen at the grounds. NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS JANE MARTYN

EDUCATION WEEK 2018 This year's Education Week will be held from Monday 6 August to Friday 10 August 2018 (Term 3, Week 3). The theme for Education Week is ‘Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world'. This theme communicates how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing, globalised world. Video: Mark Scott announces theme for EDWeek 2018 - www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULMFWr7_OzU

Urunga Public School would like to invite parents, grandparents and visitors to our Education Week morning. The morning will begin at 9.30am on the bottom COLA for a special Education Week whole school assembly. After the assembly, at around 10 am, we would like to invite our guests to join the children in their classrooms to see the amazing learning experiences that take place each day. Then from 11am we would like you to join your child(ren) for lunch.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 Spread the word! Urunga Public School is currently taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2019. If you have a child that will be attending this school next year or you know any children of family, friends or neighbours that will be attending next year please contact our office. If you would like to know more details about enrolling for Kindergarten, please contact the office on 6655 6393.

GYMNASTICS PROGRAM TERM 3 Our gymnastics program has gotten off to a flying leap. The students attended last Friday and were introduced to a range of technical moves, turns and tumbles. There were lots of laughs and smiles on the students faces as they enjoyed their gymnastics program and utilised the specialised equipment. This program supports the compulsory curriculum area of gymnastics under the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Syllabus. The program has another 7 weeks left to run and it is not too late to return your permission slip, money and join in the fun.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and carers about the importance of ensuring your child attends school on a regular basis. It is critical that students at Urunga Public School attend school each and every day, for the entire time 9.20am to 3.20pm.

Absences for reasons such as birthdays, rest days, catching up with family members, appointments that could be made out of school hours and holidays in term time etc should be avoided.

As always, we understand that students may become sick or injured and time away from school is unavoidable. In all cases of absence, we encourage parents to call as soon as possible to alert the school or upon return have a signed, dated and justified absence note. All absences by law require an explanation.

The Student Attendance Policy is guided by the Education Act (1990) which states that children must attend school unless there are justified reasons for an absence and all absences must be explained to the school within seven days of their occurrence.

A more detailed parent information flyer will be sent home outlining ‘Compulsory School Attendance’ by NSW Department of Education. If you have any further concerns around attendance, please contact the school. Kevin Patterson (Assistant Principal)

WEEKLY SCHOOL RULE

The focus this week is the orange rule “complete all work”. We ask that you reinforce this week’s rule at home with your child.

YEARS 2-6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL After having been postponed due to rain at the end of Term 2, we had a beautiful, dry and sunny day for the Year 2-6 athletics carnival last Wednesday. Bellinger kicked off the competitive part of the day by winning the war cry. Everyone had a wonderful day and tried their hardest, which is what it is all about!! Forty five students qualified for the district carnival being held next week and many others had a ball just giving it their best. The novelty events produced many giggles, some falls while in a sack and also a lot of concentration while running with an egg on a spoon! The winning house on the day was KALANG! New records were set in the senior girls 100m, long jump (these two records have stood since 1983!) and 200m by Lulu McGrath. Congratulations Lulu, a truly fantastic effort! The Kalang senior girls relay also set a new record time. Great run girls. Again, a big thank you to Mrs Hoffman, all the teachers and parent helpers on the day, as well as the P&C for running the canteen and keeping everyone fed.

GIRLS SOCCER - ROUND 4 On Thursday the Urunga Girls soccer team headed to Kempsey to compete in Round 4 of the PSSA Soccer knockout competition. The girls went up against Aldavilla Public School and played a remarkable game (especially backing up after our Athletics carnival the day before). Their sportsmanship, encouragement and teamwork were a pleasure to see on the field and made both myself and all the spectators very proud. Unfortunately the girls were defeated 2-0 but despite a tiring game, they still came off with a smile on their faces after enjoying a fun game. Well done girls, I am a very proud coach!! Miss Fisher
