The Respect of Teachers in IslamThe respect that Islam gives to teachers can

be seen by considering the prisoners from the battles during the beginning of Islam.  The Holy Prophet (S) gave

permission for each one of those prisoners who a few hours ago had raised swords

and were fighting the soldiers of Islam to be freed if they taught ten people to read

and write.  The reward for their teaching others to

read and write was freedom.

Imam Ali (AS) has said,

ال تجعلّن ذرت لسانک علی من انطقک و بالغة قولکعلی من سدّدک

Translation:

Do not point the sharpness and cutting of your tongue to one who has made you a speaker, and do not use your eloquence and power of expression against one who has taught you to speak.[1]

Respect Of Teachers

Imam Ali (AS) continuously advised people to respect teachers and pointed their attention to the significance and value of teachers.  He did so to the extent that with himself being an endless ocean of knowledge he used to say,

“I will be the servant of one who teaches me one word until the end of my life.”

Do you teach subject or do you teach children?

The student will only acquire a deep and lasting knowledge with skills if he/she

sees the importance of learning them. He will learn much faster if he enjoys what he is learning and if he sees how these

skills are relevant to his life.

You’re a REAL teacher if… you say everything twice. I mean, you repeat everything. And then you ask

“Does everyone understand?” you can’t walk past a crowd of kids without straightening up the line. you know the shortest distance and the length of travel time from your

classroom to the staffroom. you ask “Are you sure you did your best?” to the student who finishes task

before time. you ask a quiet student in the classroom if he has something to share with

the group. you have the contact numbers of your section heads. you feel the urge to talk to strange children and correct their behavior when

out in public. Your are very very conscious at report card time. you have classroom rules you always, turn a pizza into a math lesson on fractions you hear the heartbeats of crisis. always have time to listen.

know you teach STUDENTS, not subjects!
