Types of Dislocation •  Edge dislocation: Linear defect that centers around

the line, which is defined along the end of the extra portion of a plane of atoms (half plane).

Ø Atoms above dislocation line are squeezed together (compressive), while those below are pulled apart (tensile), causing localized lattice distortion.

Ø The amount of displacement (Burgers vector, b) of the d i s l o c a t i o n i s a l w a y s p e r p e n d i c u l a r t o t h e dislocation line.

Characteristics of Dislocations

•  Dislocations can terminate at free surfaces, or at grain or phase boundaries; but never within the crystal.

•  Dislocations must form closed loops or networks with branches that terminate at a surface.

•  The junction point within a network is called a node.
