On this day we recall how Martin Lutheran began a movement called the Reformation by posting 95 arguments against the selling of indulgences on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. An indulgence was a document issued by the Church stating that the buyer of the indulgence had been granted time off in purgatory because of his or her donation to the Church. Luther aggressively opposed this practice because he felt it gave the impression that people were buying forgiveness. He was also disturbed by the fact that those buying indulgences often exhibited little repentance over their sins. Instead of turning from their sins and relying on God, some people were holding on to their indulgences like it was a get out of hell freecard. From Our Administrative Pastor…

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel,

October is the month we celebrate Reformation Day, which is Oct. 31. Instead of turning from their sins and relying on God, some people were holding on to their indulgences like it was a “get out of hell free” card.

After in depth study of God’s Word, Luther would later rediscover the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And he shared that wonderful truth with the world. He preached and taught that God forgives us completely for Jesus’ sake. Because Jesus lived a perfect life for us and gave that life to make atonement for all our sins, those who rely on Christ are cleansed of all their sins and have a right standing with God. Luther reiterated Paul’s teaching (which is really God’s teaching) that we’re saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. In other words, God saves us because of his forgiveness brought about by Jesus’ cross and resurrection. And this forgiveness becomes ours—it becomes our personal possession—when we have faith in Jesus. Those who rely on Jesus for forgiveness and salvation can be sure that they’re God’s children. They are going to heaven and live with God forever.

Because that good news is as astounding today and it was in Luther’s day, we Christians celebrate Reformation Day with gusto. We’re truly thankful that God worked in the Reformation movement to bring us the comfort and life giving news of the Gospel. We’re also thankful that God used Luther to teach us the importance of God’s Word. The Bible, which is the source of the Gospel and all Christian teaching, is truly a “lamp to our feet and our light for our path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Because we’re observing the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation this year, the Lutheran churches of our area will be hold a circuit-wide Reformation Service here at Immanuel on Sunday, October 29, at 3 pm. Our music director, Ann Frank, has been working hard on the special music for this service. What’s more, Rev. Todd Wilken, who serves as the host of the radio program Issues, Etc., will be our guest preacher. Rev. Wilken is known for his clear understanding and communication of Reformation truths, so I know we’ll be uplifted by his message. Also, during a dinner following the service, we’ll enjoy a presentation given by Luther impersonator Rev. John Lukomski. Rev. Lukomski’s acting abilities are top notch, so I encourage you to attend the service and afterglow.

Since Immanuel is hosting this special Reformation Service and meal, we’re asking Immanuel members to bring a vegetable dish or salad to the dinner. Since members of sister congregations will be attending, we ask that you make double the amount you would normally bring to a potluck. I can’t help but feel that this celebration will raise the roof!

As always, I thank God for your receptivity to God’s Word and love of the Gospel. Your openness and willingness to serve are truly appreciated. God bless you richly!

Love in Christ,

As Christians, what are we supposed to do when we see a beggar on the street? I’ve wrestled with this for a long time myself and am still trying to find the best answer in our fallen world. The first thing to remember, though, when engaging in this discussion is that a beggar, a person who is begging, whether they’re holding a sign asking for help, or just holding out a hand hoping for some assistance, is a human being. He or she is a person with a history and a family. Our minds often jump to the worst case scenario of who the person is and what has brought them to this moment asking you for money and assistance. There are certainly swindlers on the streets, but there are also people who legitimately need help. Either way you see a person created by God just like you, and we don’t want to jump to negative assumptions, or suggest that he/she is less important because of their situation in this world. We certainly need to be cautious, but we don’t suggest that every homeless person is a criminal. In Mark 12:28-34 and Matthew 25:31-40 we hear encouragements from Jesus to love other and that love for others is showing love for God. In the catechism’s discussion on the 5th Commandment, we learn not only are we prohibited from murdering others, but we are also supposed to “help and support in every physical need.” So what does that look like? Well, it can look different in different situations. Perhaps you’re walking down the sidewalk and you see a person asking for help so you offer to buy the person food at a restaurant. Maybe you’ve been blessed at work and you decide to financially assist someone in need so you stop and talk to the person and get to know them a bit and see how, specifically, you can help in that moment in addition to prayer. Jesus says in Matthew 26 and Mark 14 that the poor will always be with us, so we’re not going to solve all of the world’s problems with one solution. Only Jesus can do that, and only he will do that when he returns, but we can still show mercy on someone by sharing the Gospel, and find some way to help in the moment if possible. Many of my friends prepare “homeless kits” (or something of a similar name). These are bags (plastic or paper) filled with helpful stuff. You can do a basic web search and find any number of suggested packing lists. The bag may contain tuna and granola bars, socks and warm clothes (depending on the season), water, or any number of toiletries that someone might need (i.e. toothbrushes, toothpaste, Band-Aids, etc). This way, if you know you’re going to be driving through an area that commonly has people standing at intersections asking for help, you can hand them a small bag of useful supplies that don’t (automatically) risk enabling an addiction which can happen when handing out money.

One of the best things to do is to find a place that helps the homeless and those in need and volunteer. Churches and nonprofits, as well as city and county run organizations have been established to help those in need and they have the structure and expertise to do so in the most beneficial way. Is any organization perfect? No. However, giving your time to an organization that provides consistent assistance can be much more helpful than just giving $5 to a guy outside of Busch Stadium, or a pair of socks to a man on the overpass intersection. Can God use those to bless people? Probably, but most reports suggest that it’s not nearly as helpful in the long run. We are supposed to show love and mercy, but how we do that might look different in different times and different places. The questions about how to care for others should always revolve around how best to help the other person and how to best steward the gifts God has given to us. I hope this was a helpful response. God’s blessings on your day! If you have questions, feel free to let me know. In Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor… “Ask the Pastor”

A “Note” from our Music Director

Organ uncovered... Yes, the plastic which has covered Immanuel's organ since the first week in May will be taken off on Tuesday, October 10th! The organ will then be tuned and will be ready for worship once again. During the construction of the narthex expansion, the organ was protected from dust, which even when temporary walls, etc were put in place did manage to find its way up into the balcony! So, we are grateful that the decision to cover the organ was made. The organ is well-known as the “King of Instruments” because of it's wide expressive range. Differences in the shape of pipes enable the organ to imitate many other instruments, especially wind instruments, or create a wide variety of sounds (timbres). Worship at Immanuel has continued throughout the summer with the piano and keyboard, along with a number of other instruments. However, as we begin the fall season, I look forward to welcoming back the “King of Instruments” to our worship services. To Him be the glory!

Funke News: Hope through Endurance This past month was one of our harder months in Tanzania, and yet throughout the month, we have received little gifts of grace and hope.

Adoption Update While we had hoped to share the happy news that Julia is home, we didn’t get to that point this month. We did, however, make progress. The police report made it to Dar Es Salaam, the approval letter was sent from the Ministry of Social Welfare to the commissioner in Dodoma, and the commissioner returned it with his signature. However, instead of calling us when the letter arrived back at the Ministry of Social Welfare, the social worker put the letter in the regular post. For almost two weeks now we have been waiting for the arrival of that letter. We are praying it has not been permanently lost, because if it has, we will have to get another letter from the commissioner, and that will mean another month without our daughter. Please pray with us that it comes soon. We are aching to bring her home.

Health Thankfully, with the exception of breaking one of his toes, Eric’s health has been better. Michael had to go back on meds, because the amoeba wasn’t completely out of his system. With all the travels, Linda has been battling a UTI that just won’t quit. The doctors here even inserted a hep-lock one week so they could give her daily IV antibiotics. She is now on her third round of meds, and we are praying that this will be the end of it.

Julia Last but not least, our love for Julia continues to deepen. This month she has really warmed up to us. She and Michael laugh and giggle together, chase each other around, and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Her shyness is melting away to the point that we have now heard her use full sentences in Swahili. She loves to read with us and even fell asleep in Linda’s arms this week. We can’t wait to bring our little girl home.

This is part of the newsletter written by Eric & Linda Funke on Sept. 7, 2017. Would you like to be added to their email list? If so, email Eric & Linda at [email protected] and let them know.

An Update from Our Missionary Partners

Don’t forget...Half of the proceeds from our Wurstmarkt this year will

be donated to the Funkes.

We have 17 MWF students and 14 T/Th students. They keep their teachers on their toes at all times. Our students will be very busy during the month of October. We are learning letter sounds, number recognition and how to spell and write our names. We are practicing our caring and sharing skills and learning how Jesus cares for His flock. We will be walking to the Library for a tour and a special story time. You should go to the library and see our art work that will be displayed this month. We also will take a field trip to the fire station to learn all about fire safety. At the end of October, Bob the Bat Man will visit and teach us awesome facts about bats. We want to thank everyone that is helping us with school supplies and other donations. You should see how many tissues we go through in one month's time! Many thanks to those that have made monetary donations, including those who have selected our preschool for their Thrivent Choice Dollars. We have a special request. Would you like to be part of our "Adopt a Student" program? At times, we have need for tuition help for a child or two. In addition, mittens, hats, etc...would be helpful as winter approaches. Our students in need would stay anonymous, but you would know if your student is a boy or a girl and if he or she is in the MWF class or the T/Th class. Please contact Linda, Cindy or Lisa if you are interested in this new program. God bless you. Thank you for your prayers. Linda Polansky, Director

That happens primarily on Sunday mornings at the Divine Service and in Bible Study, but we also get together for fun, fellowship, and service activities throughout the year. You can join the Immanuel BASIC Facebook group and email [email protected] to be added to the weekly email list for the newest updates. Our next planned activity is on Oct 22nd from 12-2. We'll have food, conversation, and pumpkin-related fun.

bins are located in the back of the education building. Load them up with your paper recycling products! Thank you for being good stewards and for your support of our youth!

Greetings from the Women’s Christian Ministry (WCM)!

I can sum up October in five words… WURSTMARKT, COUNTRY STORE, BUNCO, and REFORMATION!

Sunday, October 1st, is the date of Immanuel’s annual Wurstmarkt and along with it comes the WCM’s Country Store! At the Country Store you will find homemade baked goods, various crafts, and other exciting items! Our baked goods will not be priced but will be sold by your free-will donations! If you would like to help by donating bakery and craft items to sell at our tables and/or by purchasing something that day, we thank you in advance! Our quilters guild will have some items for sale, too! Don’t miss it!

Our Ladies’ Bible study continues to meet each week and will begin our 41st session (study) in October. Wow! All are welcome to join us on Thursdays at 7:00 pm in the overflow room.

Mark your calendars for the Circuit Reformation Service at Immanuel on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 3:00 pm. A potluck dinner will follow the service. There will be a guest preacher, lots of beautiful music, and special entertainment at the dinner. Don’t miss it!

across from the courthouse at 5:15pm.

event. Please place your donations in the church kitchen.

Thank you for your help as we share the light of Jesus on Halloween night!

Sweet Treat Walk at the PumpkinFest in downtown Waterloo

Saturday, Oct. 14 9 am—4 pm

Sweet Treats Needed! Homemade sweet treats of

all kinds (cakes, pies, cookies, sweet breads,

muffins, etc.) are needed. Your donation must have the

ingredients labeled and cannot use refrigeration since

the event is outdoors. We ask that if you are able to

donate, please drop off your items in the church kitchen on October 13th, or you may drop them

off at Immanuel’s booth the day of the PumpkinFest.

Volunteers Needed! We also are in need of volunteers to work the booth during the

PumpkinFest, and a sign up sheet is located in the narthex.

Hosted by Immanuel’s Board of Evangelism

Come & celebrate with us! The congregations in Circuit 6 invite you to a special Divine Service at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Rev. Todd Wilken will be the guest preacher, and the service will be filled with various instrumentalists, a mass bell choir, a mass vocal choir, and various other worship helpers. There will be a potluck dinner following the service. If you plan to attend, we are asking each Immanuel family to bring a side dish or salad for the dinner. Fried chicken, rolls, desserts, and drinks will be provided. By the way, the word is that Martin Luther may join us for dinner! All are welcome; no RSVP necessary!
